I went to Rivoland (Queanbeyan, outskirt of ACT), and have check out tiles for the splashback. According to the tile consultant, the tiles cannot be put side by side without grout as tiles will expand. The consultant showed me howerver the tiles that has a sharp edge where a thinner grout can be put in between. But i found the edge is to sharp, and it will eventually retain more dirt. Michelle, how did you put the grout so that the sharp edge does not show? Flush? Thanks Michelle, james, mozzi, and 3times for the replies. I have no clue what he did, as long as he did it. I have one of the 300 x 600 tiles in my office now…..I don’t see any sharp edges! Rivoland told me the same thing in regards to floor tiles. The sharp edge tiles are rectified tiles and have been cut after production to give them a sharp edge allowing a smaller grout line i.e 1mm instead of 3mm. This is what I have been told anyway. some solutions are to ask the tiler to lay with no grout line or ask for smaller grout line and coloured grout to match tiles. My only other suggestion would be to call a local tiler. cheers, J larger tiles 25Apr 29, 2008 8:23 pm we've just picked some larger tiles for our kitchen bench top splash back and along the bench area/stove back area. they are 300 x 200.
I intend to have them tall not wide. I tried googling for a picture of them but no luck . I'm planning to visit the tile shop on Saturday and ask to buy a single tile to keep. ( same with our en-suite tiles ) We wanted something 300mm tall for the kitchen bench side as we are having wooden capping above the bench on that side and liked the idea of a 300 or so height to the splash back. The other alternative was to go 3 rows of 100 mm tiles. Hubby took a bit of convincing as he was worried it looked a bit "different" but the tiles are beautifully glossy and almost look like glass. They are a silverish grey with fine lines running down them behind the surface glaze which is very smooth. The lines are a bit like you see in shot silk material. The tiles are from memory around $33-34 a sq m2 They also had a black version. I thought they were both absolutely beautiful. Our benchtops will be q-stone graphite and the cupboard doors are to be laminex zinc works. Our kitchen will be fairly large so it should work well. Does this sound ok MIchelle? Kexkez…..I know the tile you are talking about…..very nice , I have used them a few times myself for clients. Sounds lovely Kexkez. Tell hubby the larger the tile, the less grout! 1) Like someone previously mentioned expansion issues. Not overly critical in a splashback. 2) Sanitary reasons. No matter how tight you lay tiles against each other their will always be a minute gape which will allow bacteria mould to gain a foothold. Hardly something you want above your food preparation areas. Have them laid on a tiny grout line (approx. 1mm) and finished in a colour matched grout. The appearance will be seamless. Re: Big size tiles splashback 300X600 for kitchen: ugly? 29Jul 19, 2008 11:41 pm Michelle Not sure about all that! But with these tiles if you want grout, yes it is minimal! The tiles are smoothed edged, which means they butt up to each other. Grout is up to you. I use these tiles all the time, its up to the client or tiler if they want to use grout or not. It’s a nice look, very modern and minimal grout for cleaning. Michelle with no gaps between the tiles, what happens when the tiles expand, I was under the impression the the gap was needed to allow for this Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Big size tiles splashback 300X600 for kitchen: ugly? 30Jul 20, 2008 8:52 am Hi although i have asked to put as thin as possible, the grout laid turn out to be quite wide. Pretty please Paula Re: Big size tiles splashback 300X600 for kitchen: ugly? 33Jul 20, 2008 10:37 am Bit late for the OP but we did this just recently with 600x300mm tiles laid vertically. Worked out okay we think. The grout lines are 1.5 mm but we should have used coloured grout.
We made a mistake though and don't quite know what to do about it. We originally thought the rangehood would be at 600mm high but because it's a gas cooktop it has to be a minimum 650mm/max 700mm. We put it at 700mm (better height anyway) which leaves us a 100mm gap between the hood and the tiles. Don't want to use the same tiles cut to that size. We thought of trying to match the granite as closely as possible with 100 x 100 or 100 x 50 tiles but are going off that idea. Current thinking is to use stainless steel tiles (100 x 10mm ) horizontally, or 100x100 stainless. Or use long stainless steel strips. Anybody have any thoughts on if that would work? The kitchen walls will probably end up in Dulux Stream. Its too wide to put a stainless steel strip in, if something had to be done, I'd match what is already there but just at the range hood. Back to original question, big tiles in our kitchen looks good, i love it. very neat. Glad you like your splashback. There are two kinds of rectified tiles. On has a bevelled edge the other is square. It sounds like your tiles have a bevelled edge, which once grouted results in a grout line that appears wider. Re: Big size tiles splashback 300X600 for kitchen: ugly? 37Jul 20, 2008 10:55 am Paula, guess we could leave it but we're more inclined to do 'something.' And preferably all the way across the wall and around the corner.
Kevin, hadn't thought of a utensils bar. That might work. Thanks. We have thought of putting stainless steel splashback behind the stove. Covers the tile but what the heck. If you can afford the extra $$$ I reckon they would look super ceiling to floor on all walls. claego Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I saw these tiles in the display, love it and took photos... i am thinking to have the same... i think large tiles look great (although i don't have a photo in the kitchen with big tile, but i think it will looks fine) Re: Big size tiles splashback 300X600 for kitchen: ugly? 40Jul 21, 2008 10:29 am Ancient Mariner Anybody have any thoughts on if that would work?
