Browse Forums Kitchen Splashbacks 1 Aug 22, 2011 10:06 am Hi everyone, I wanted to know if using very large tiles for a splashback, is common enough so as to not make them look too 'out there'. The height of the splash back would be around 710 mm. I was wanting to have minimum grouting on the splashback so that cleaning would not be an issue (no thankyou , I dont want a glass splashback). Just wondering if any of you had come across this situation and how you implemented it. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: Large splash back tiles 2Aug 22, 2011 4:01 pm We have it in our current kitchen, looks good and easy to clean. Do you have overhead cabinets? We do. Our tiles are 600x600 with the square edges and the cut tiles are at the top. Re: Large splash back tiles 5Aug 24, 2011 1:54 pm Ours are going to be 600x300 too - vertical with minimal grout lines. We are also considering 600x600 tiles but the two tilers that came to give us quotes both (separately) gave us the 'look' when we mentioned 600x600. They said those will look 'heavy' on the walls. So just wondering those 600x600 tiles will really give that 'heavy' look ?? I am keen on 600x600 because of the minimal grouts ! thank you Re: Large splash back tiles 7Sep 02, 2011 2:35 pm aj8 Hi Alt0160, would you have photos of your kitchen showing the 600x600 which you dont mind posting here please? I am keen on 600x600 because of the minimal grouts ! thank you I cant imagine why they would give you the 'look', after all you are paying them to do something. Its not as if they are doing it for free . As regards the heavy look - I think they mean that it would dominate the visual aspect of the kitchen. Well, it would depend on what colour of tile you were using. Try and stick to lighter shades - these have the effect of opening up the kitchen and making it look bigger. My overhead cabinets are 650mm above the benchtop (I am putting 700mm deep benchtops as well ). As I am using 600x600 polished porcelain, there would need to be a cut portion of around 50mm (minus grout width) at the top of the 600x600 tile. I dont suppose it would be that noticeable. The overall effect however, would be great, as well as cleaning it would be quite easy. I am trying to minimize grout - this is the hardest part to clean. I was thinking of using 800x400 tiles and then cutting them to the exact height thereby making them 650x400 effetively - this would eliminate the cut peice at the top - but I dont think it is worth the extra dollars - jumps from approx$60 per sq meter to $140 per square meter. Re: Large splash back tiles 8Sep 02, 2011 3:03 pm I have 600 x 600 porcelain tiles in chocolate as the splashback in an all white kitchen, the contrast is what I was wanting as furniture in the adjacent living/dining area is a mix of chocolate/glass/chrome all selected to tie the whole area together. Imho it doesn't look heavy, but in saying that everyone has a different idea of what suits and what doesn't!! LOL The entire splashback is only 2650mm long on two walls and overhead cabinets are 600mm above the bench. The whole area has lots of natural light along with light vanilla cream 600 x 600 porcelain tiles on the floor. Grout is the same colour as the tiles and personally I've never found grout hard to clean, last house had off-white 200mm splashback tiles with matching grout and it wasn't hard to keep clean at all. I suspect your tilers haven't done a 600 x 600 splashback (mine hadn't) and they try to talk you out of it because it's something they haven't done previously and unsure how it will look when completed. Some tradies (note I said 'some') can't and won't think outside the square and if you want something different from what they are used to doing they find all sorts of excuses to talk you out of it. Much easier for them to repeat the same old, same old!!! Re: Large splash back tiles 11Oct 02, 2011 9:16 am I don't know is it just me, or the limited overview we get with small pics, but the small offcut at the top does not "offend" me at all! Even if these large 6x6 tiles. I think it would be even less "striking" with 3x6 tiles. It looks good to me ... alt0160, what colour is your grout? And the width of the grout lines? Thx 3mm grout lines. The grout colour is "matched" to the tiles (in reality its slightly lighter) Re: Large splash back tiles 15Oct 02, 2011 5:02 pm Thanks, alt Wrexter, what is the height behind your splashback? I assume you cut the tiles that way because you also had more than 600 height? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
