Browse Forums Kitchen Splashbacks 1 Sep 01, 2009 11:30 am Thanks to Abstar's stunningly beautiful glass kitchen splashback...see below (I hope she won't mind me showing these! ) http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p371/brojas7906/d15808be.jpg http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p371/brojas7906/ad19d02d.jpg I am now once again umming and arrghing about upgrading to the glass splashback. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE glass and think I will regret not getting it, BUT it's soooo dam expensive. I have had 3 quotes done and am waiting for another 2 and they are as follows: #1 - $4000 #2 - $3145 #3 - $3200 We can either bust our guts financially and get it done now, save up for it and get it done after we move in or just leave it the way it is with tiles??? So what's everyone's thoughts??? What would you do??? Please help! My thoughts on this are that I'm going to go for it and get it done now - once I move in it's probably just going to keep falling to the bottom of the list of other things that will need to be done, I mean, it's never really going to be a 'need-to-have' item. But, if you spend any sort of substantial time in your kitchen (and I do), you may as well make it a place that you enjoy being. Can you say that you'll enjoy being there if you're constantly looking at the tiles and regretting not getting the splashback? I know I wouldn't. And so I'd rather make a financial sacrifice now than have to go through the trauma of saving/quoting/getting it done later. Just my two cents. Hi, thanks for your quick response and I must say I agree with you, but the finances don't...LOL The total area is 4 sqmt, in two peices of glass, with 3 powerpoints. Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 5Sep 01, 2009 11:52 am Hmm I see. Sounds like a fair price then. How long do you have until the house is built? I know one of my building requirements is that I have to have the splashback put in before handover, so at the moment, I'm just trying to put aside $150 a pay (more if I can spare it), that way you dont feel out of pocket having to pay $3000/$4000 all at once! I'm having granite, and I think I should also have a granite splashback so that it matches, and only one lot of workmen are employed, so it should save money (instead of one company to do the benchtops and wasting part of a slab, then another company to supply & install glass splashbacks). What do you think? Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 7Sep 01, 2009 12:25 pm If you can't afford it then don't put yourself under even greater pressure when you can do it later on. Sure it would look nice n pretty and lovely and all that, but think about how you are going to be living if you do go ahead with it, is it really -that- important? I think that Abstar's kitchen is gorgeous, but I've seen beautiful kitchens with tile splashbacks too.... I think it's the colour of that splashback that makes it so striking & stunning. I am getting glass, only because it was only $900 to upgrade, but for me stone benchtops will have to wait.... there are going to be enough extra expenses when it comes time to move, I'd be saving that $3000 - $4000 until then. buzz Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 9Sep 01, 2009 1:02 pm Oh dear ummmmm as much as I want to say GO FOR IT!!! That's exactly what I am going to say GO FOR IT No don't, I take that back. Think straight.... is it that important to you or will there be something else that may come along more important, could this cause a strain in the happy partnership of building because he will say YOU wanted it don't put more stress on yourselves than there will already be. Just tell me how much the tiles are compared to the glass Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 10Sep 01, 2009 1:25 pm We basically had a budget in mind for the whole renovation we are doing - so when I had to decide on something I really wanted, but didn't necessarily need, I prioritised it by saying "How hard is it to do later?" ie I wanted a waterfall bench top - impossible to do later!!! So that got fitted in the budget. New lounge suite - would be nice, but much easier to save up for and do later on, IYKWIM. SO basically, if we possibly could, we fitted the "fixtures" into our budget and other "easy to do later" things have been left out. Don't know if that helps, but I think you are right about now or never - you just won't be bothered later (very messy) and it will cost more in the long run ie getting tiles, taking tiles off, getting glass installed. Question is: How much do you really want it? NOW OR NEVER!!! Good luck deciding!! Edit: Having said that, I really really wanted our main bathroom tiled floor to ceiling, which is definitely a "fixture", but don't think that will make it into the budget. Guess you have to draw the line somewhere . The question is, where is your line? Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 11Sep 01, 2009 2:03 pm How about you put some gorgeous tiles in ... enjoy the tiles for a few years. Then, down the track when you are a bit better off financially, you might find it would be exciting getting something new done to your kitchen and it could be a whole different trend then .... or you may be madly in love with your kitchen still and not even consider getting anything changed.. There comes a point when we are building on prioritising those upgrades ... it's great advice about doing what really has to be done. Also, you have mentioned you have got 3 quotes ... is one of those quotes from your builder .. did you by any chance ask your builder for an upgrade cost? At the end of the day, it's down to you and your finances. Bear in mind there is talk now that interest rates are going up ... it's all too easy to get carried away with upgrades. I wish you all the best of luck ... Just thought I would attach a photo of a kitchen tile splashback I saw in a show home (I am not getting it done, but it's gorgeous and different ... gives you an idea on how some tiles can work just as well as a glass as a feature splashback) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 12Sep 01, 2009 2:21 pm That's a lovely tile splashback, Jaelee !!! We've just ordered our glass splashback (3.2x0.75) with 2 power points and it has cost us $1435. I live in country Victoria and it will be coming from Melbourne (through a local company though). Good luck! Re: Oh no...Should I or shouldn't I??? 15Sep 01, 2009 6:43 pm Why tile at all ? Leave the walls until you can afford the glass. That way you haven't spent on the tiles PLUS the glass down the track. I have just recieved the last quote, which came in at $3069 which includes travel (3hr round trip) and insulation, the cheapest quote I got, it's actually a great price considering the amount of glass that's involved in this splashback. I have just look at the plans again and there are four pieces of glass, sizes are below, and three powerpoints. 1750mm x 650mm 1776mm x 650mm 1620mm x 650mm 820mm x 650mm Still not sure....
