The price they can charge for a piece of glass (I know theres a lot to it..but... lol) I'm just going to have to try and find some nice tiles. I'm hoping I can get the smaller square tiles in a nice colour. Have seen a sample of these little tiles that come in one colour like green, but each square is a slightly different colour green..or orange, blues, browns etc... I hope I get some good choices! The budget can only go so far. We are having 200x500 cherry red tiles layed horizontaly and in a brick fashion. Hope it will look okay. Whatever you do will look great and it will be your individual style. R Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 9Jun 05, 2009 9:42 pm Hi, we are having a stainless steel splashback on our free-standing oven, and these glass tiles everywhere else in the kitchen. They are 47mm x 47mm, quite thick and painted a silver colour on the back. Not flat glass, it has an uneven wave type finish on it. I fell in love with them, and since we are having some frosted glass cupboards in the kitchen I thought they would go really well. Not the best photos, as they are hard to take because of the reflection. Plus this sample has been knocked around a bit too. Tile info (as you may be able to get them in other tile shops) Glass Mosaics SDM15 4.7 x 4.7 on 300 x 300 sheet. Works out to approx $250 square metre (but surprisingly we didn't need too many metres as we had the stainless steel splashback for the oven, so the overall cost was actually quite reasonable, for what we hope to be quite a stunning effect, fingers crossed Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 13Jun 06, 2009 9:35 am Just out of interest folks, how much have you been quoted for tiles vs glass for the same area/s? TBH I haven't even considered tiles again this time around so I have no idea of knowing whether it's much cheaper! The quote that I got for my glass - starphire/colour matched - seemed to be pretty reasonable ($1600 for 3000mm x 1000mm) and I expect it to be cheaper still once they measure on site as I over-estimated the size by a ways. Just curious Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 14Jun 06, 2009 11:19 am Eljay, we just have standard tiles, although we did add a frieze tile as well to jazz it up a bit, have enclosed photo below. It is just a laminate bench top too. I am quite happy with it all The white circle is just the camera flash, ignore that http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM1156.jpg Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 15Jun 06, 2009 11:30 am Not me . . . I didn't want tiles partly because of the big window in the kitchen, I thought they might look out of place, and partly because it would have been a nightmare trying to decide on the right colour. With the rural character of the home I kind of picture having a rack above the stove with ladels etc hanging off. The stainless steel cost us $841. I do think that tiles (with careful colour selection) could easily look just as good (if not better) in it's place. SS was really just an easy way out of having to think about more colour schemes! http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp253/mtbpebble/IMG_0985.jpg Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 16Jun 07, 2009 1:18 pm There was no way we could afford a glass splashback. We are having diamond gloss laminate called White Valencia, then the splashback tiles are going to be stacked 100x300 mat white. We went with the mat white because I thought a gloss tile would compete with the gloss laminex. Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 18Sep 17, 2009 6:46 pm My glass splashback was approx $900 to do the same in small glass mosaics was approx $700. Re: Do you have a standard tiled splashback?? 19Sep 19, 2009 10:10 am Wow thanks for all the posts guys Sorry I didn't reply, I didn't get any notification that I had an answer to my post Only saw it as I was scrolling through the list lol I'm seeing the tiles people today, but from what I can see so far Im only allowed tiles up to $28. Basically for the splashback that limits me to the smallish rectangle ones in plain white! Not to happy about this! And they charge extra for borders etc. But do you think they will tell me how much this will be??? No!!!! I keep getting the standard line "you will find all this out at your colours selection appointment" Grrrr so damn annoying! I'm thinking of getting onto Grays online and buying some small mosiac glass tiles, they are nice and cheapish. I'll try to just hand them to the tiler when the time comes lol even though in my contract it says I'm not allowed to deal directly with the trades guys! Anyone else got some pics of your tile splashbacks? The ones so far look great! Love the stainless steel one too... is that hard to keep clean??? Some tilers will not lay them or charge alot extra because they are a pain. Also you will have to buy extra as they break easily when being cut.
