Browse Forums Kitchen Splashbacks 1 Apr 29, 2009 6:03 pm I am planning to install a glass kitchen splashback, but I would like the bottom 15cm or so to be the same stone as the benchtop. I have enquired with the company who is supplying and installing our benchtops, and I have been informed that there is likely to be enough left over from the benchtop installation to provide this extra 15cm all the way around the kitchen splashback, and on the wall containing the window-but that they will charge me $800 to install it. That seems like a lot of money, what do others think? Do I have a right to ask for the offcuts to be left there so that we can have them installed after handover? Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 2Apr 29, 2009 6:15 pm tell them you will keep the leftover pieces as you paid for them. stay safe happy building Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 3Apr 29, 2009 6:44 pm I agree with Shelley, although in our contract it states that any materials are the builders property so make sure you ask nicely! I have found that our builder hasn't minded us keeping leftover bits and pieces which are no use to them, but if we want things like the full pallets of pavers left over we then pay them a negotiated price (probably cost price they paid, and it saves them taking them away again). Oh our benchtops are just laminate, but they did throw the offcuts in the bin, which I then salvaged I'm testing out the durability of them whilst living in our shed I can't see that your offcuts would be of any use to them anywhere else, so no reason why they shouldn't let you keep them for no cost. Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 4Apr 29, 2009 7:08 pm The stonemason will be charging you per slab. Whatever is left over from that slab you should be allowed to keep. As for the $800 installation, how big is the area? When working out costs, I think it is around $60-80 p/l metre for installation. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 6Apr 30, 2009 7:19 pm I was going through my building contract and it struck me exactly why your cost is double what it should be. In our contract any alterations and additions after prestart incur a $400 variation fee. So I figured your builder is probably charging you some similar figure as well as the actual cost of doing it on top. If you can somehow get them to agree to do it without making it a variation then it should work out cheaper Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 7Apr 30, 2009 11:23 pm Thanks Pebble, but interesting enough, this is the cost directly to the benchtop supplier/installer. Since we left it too late to do it through our home builder, I had to go directly to the benchtop company. So I'm not sure why they are overcharging for this work??? Re: Kitchen Bench 'Offcuts' 11May 03, 2009 7:32 pm hey vannessad, you might just want to check that this is ok, cause you can't install stone behind a cooktop for safety reasons, unless the benchtop is 900mm deep. It has to do with the fire rating of the stone or something Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden!
