Browse Forums Laundry Appliances 1 Jan 02, 2013 3:39 am Been looking at washing machine (WM) and dryer (DR). We currently have BOSCH WM and pretty happy with it, however I've read few great reports on Miele machines and decided to have a look. After much research I got even more confused. Can someone recommend which WM and DR to get. I liked stainless steel package W 5820 WPS http://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/products/washingmachines_models_W_5820_WPS-42862.htm T 8822 C http://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/products/tumbledryers_models_T_8822_C-42855.htm However I've noticed that dryer is only 2 star energy rating compare to some others that are 6 star, even though it's more expensive than its 6 star counterparts. That comes from it being normal "Condenser Dryer" instead of being a "Heatpump Dryer". The other thing is not sure if stainless steel is better than normal white coating. The other package to consider is W 5835 WPS http://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/products/washingmachines_models_W_5835_WPS-42863.htm T 8827 WP http://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/products/tumbledryers_models_T_8827_WP-44090.htm The price wise it's surprisingly cost less - $4998 instead of $5698 for stainless steel. Would appreciate any other recommendations on MIELE packages? or should I stick with BOSCH? Re: MIELE Washing Machine and Dryer 4Jan 05, 2013 10:44 pm Any other feedback? Stainless steel vs White? Expensive 2 star "Condenser Dryer" vs cheaper 6 star "Heatpump Dryer"? Re: MIELE Washing Machine and Dryer 5Jan 06, 2013 9:43 pm Condenser dryers don't vent the humid air to the surrounds so they suit places where ventilation is limited or exhaust ducts are not possible/overly expensive. So it is more a question of location. Laundry closet in middle of house? Condenser. Regular project home laundry with door & exhaust fan to outside? Heat pump dryer should be fine. Blog: http://jyndeira.net/blog/ Re: MIELE Washing Machine and Dryer 6Jan 24, 2013 12:53 pm Condenser dryers push the hot humid air from the drying clothes through cooling fins that condense the moisture in the air and collect it into a container, or drain this off into a sink. The means to heat the dryer is either an electric element (most dryers) or a heat pump. A heat pump dryer is effectively the same technology a reverse cycle air-conditioner uses therefore it is very efficient, hence the six star energy rating. The electric element in non heat pumps dryers is similar to that in an electric bar heater or kettle and use a lot of energy to heat the air (2000+ watts) With non-condenser dryers, you need to leave an external window or door open when the dryer is operating to prevent the build-up of moisture in your laundry. Watch how wet your walls and windows get when you don't. Venting these dryers externally if you can saves having to open a window/door. Condenser dryers on the other hand, remove the moisture from the air, HOWEVER most still blow warm air. While they won't leave your laundry walls and windows wet with mositure if you forget to open a window, your laundry will get very warm if you close it off while the condenser dryer is running. In fact, most manufacturers state that if the dryer is normally in a cupboard, then the door must remain open when being used as they rely on heating cool air to dry your clothes. This is because cool air holds less moisture than warm air so recirculating the warm air in a closed space means the dryer is less efficient drying your clothes. I'm not sure about the Miele dryers, but some manufacturers also cool the heated air before venting it. This means the dryer is putting cool dry air back in your laundry - can you check if the heat pump dryer you were recommended has this feature? We have an Asko condenser dryer (non-heat pump) and it works a treat. As far as I'm aware, ALL Asko and Miele dryers are condenser dryers. If you can afford it, the best option is a condenser dryer with heat pump (Miele T 8827 WP). It's energy efficient and doesn't require external venting/open window; just keep your internal laundry door open. These top end appliances are quiet when running and they look good too. Better still, when it's wet outside, we leave clothes that can't be tumble dried on the airer in front of the dryer. The dry warm air coming from the dryer helps dry everything quicker.
