Browse Forums Laundry Appliances 1 Apr 23, 2010 5:52 pm We are on the hunt for a washing machine. l would like to know how many kgs your washing machine is, what brand, how many people you have in your family, whether your washing machine is big enough and also how you have found the brand? Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 2Apr 23, 2010 6:13 pm We've got a Fisher Paykell 7.5kg top loader, bought new 6 months ago. F+P is an average brand, it does alright but expect to call the repairman out a few times in its lifetime, and pray you don't get a factory dud. We bought the 7.5kg one as we're planning on starting a family in the next few years. It looks huge, but I bet with primary school aged kids I'll be filling it up a few times a week Currently we do one half load a week between the two of us, full load with sheets. There are a few 10kg front loaders hanging around, they look ENORMOUS! Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 3Apr 23, 2010 6:18 pm We have an LG 7kg front loader and I would NEVER go back to a top loader again. The front loader washes better and uses less water and powder. We bought it in 2002 (pre-kids) and it's still going strong despite never being serviced in that time We have 4 of us now so when the LG gives up the ghost we will get another front loader of at least 8kgs. I am thinking Bosch next time because we are very impressed with our Bosch dishwasher which is whisper quiet. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. The front loader washes better and uses less water and powder. We had one too, but sadly it died after only about six or seven years ....so now we have a Samsung front loader, same size. Our family consists of three teenage/adult kids plus two parents, we do umpteen loads every week and it's definitely adequate. We have the same and 3 kids under 5, it isn't big enough for the 5 of us, I wash every 2 days and yes it's choca block full, I'm so over washing clothes Oh and yeah our F&P broke down three times in the first few weeks , havn't had a problem with it since though , had it 5 years. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 6Apr 23, 2010 7:01 pm We are looking at an LG front loader maybe 7.5kg. Just the 2 of us. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 7Apr 23, 2010 7:15 pm We have an LG front loader, 7kg. I wash a full load daily, plus a couple of extra on the weekends. There are 2 adults and 4 children aged 2-11yrs. I think it's the right size for us... I prefer to wash daily. I don't like dirty clothes hanging around longer than a few hours Have had the washer for 2 years, no problems so far. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 8Apr 23, 2010 8:49 pm We have a F&P 7.5kg top loader, and have had it for at least 7 years. It's been fantasic. I have 2 kids and I still do not wash every day. I wait until I have a full load (even though it has an automatic water level sensor thingy). I also have a large clothes line to accomodate the large washer, and I can get 2 full loads on the clothes line (36 metres of line space). It was in storage while we built, and I used a 5kg F&P whilst in our temp accom. I was washing sometimes 2 loads every day because it was so much smaller than what I was used to, and I hated it! We have had absolutely no problems with it (touch wood), but the next machine will most likely be front loader to save on water and (apparently) give a better wash! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... Very economical cycle, clean clothes, no issue. Good quality brand - more reliable than some others IMO. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 10Apr 24, 2010 11:32 am We have a 7.5Kg Simpson - Eziset - I bought one with the least amount of computer parts/electronic boards - it has pull/push and twist buttons!!! Bought it 5 years ago for 2 of us - fits a full queen bed sheets/doona cover/6 pillow cases in there comfortably for 1 load - can do 6 x bath sheets and a couple of towels and floor mats/hand towels in there on one load also! Have not had it serviced once, and "touch wood" nothing has gone wrong with it!!! Love the fact that it is simple to use - so there's no excuse from DH to not put a load of washing on!!! This will be our first washing machine purchase so l wanna make sure l get the right one. Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! With the 4 of us I do 3-4 loads a week in my 7kg front loader, but I don't like to overload it as I find it washes better if it's not too full. So, IMO 6.5kgs would be fine for you and your future family size. However, if you can afford to get the next size up then do so as you won't regret it. It also depends on whether you like to do 1 or 2 large loads or more smaller loads Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 13Apr 24, 2010 7:52 pm I've got a smaller F&P machine - 5.5kg, toploader. Have had it for ....maybe 10 years? Have never had it serviced, have never had an issue. When I got it there was 2 of us (Aaah, those were the days!!!) and it was heaps big enough. Now there are 4 of us and it's still big enough. I do wash most days though. Building on an acre in Macedon ......one day. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 14Apr 24, 2010 8:07 pm l guess 6.5kgs should be big enough for me. l'll just have to wash my clothes more frequently if its not enough. Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 15Apr 24, 2010 8:13 pm We have a 8kg Electrolux front loader (for the 2 of us). I had a FisherP top loader which died after 6 years. Would never go back to a top loader again after now having a front loader. I find front loaders are much more gentler on your clothes, are more water wise and so much quieter (my old FP used to sound like an airplane was taking off in my laundry ). Plus one of the advantages of having a front loader is running your laundry benchtop straight over the washing machine to make your laundry a bit more streamlined. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 16Apr 24, 2010 8:23 pm We have an LG front loader 7kg washer /dryer. big enough for two of us but we seem to generate mountains of washing. I would not recomend anyone get the washer dryer combo. The dryer is terrible and you cant just do a dry load. We never use the dry function now. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 17Apr 24, 2010 8:48 pm Suddenly this topic reminded me a q, how long do u adults wear ur pants/ trousers b4 throwing it in the machine? ( I assume u wear it for duties like working in an office, shops, but not for digging, working in the roof etc. I think the frequency of washing plays quite a factor. When I heard a friend's friend frequency, i am astonished. will share a while later. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 18Apr 24, 2010 9:11 pm I have a bosch front loader 6.5kg and it is brilliant. It washes beautifully and is much better than the whirlpool front loader we had previously. I do a single load every day. The length of the wash cycle for front loaders doesn't allow you to do all your washing in one day so this routine works well for me. Check out the choice guide to help you decide on a washing machine, I think you have to pay for the most recent report but it certainly helps makes sure you don't get a lemon too. Re: what size washing machine do you have and is it big enou 19Apr 24, 2010 10:42 pm While front loaders have a longer wash cycle time than top loaders, I don't find it a drama. I think our old top loaders used to take 50 minutes and our front loaders about 1:20... Anyway, for instance yesterday I did four loads, today one load - tomorrow, I'll no doubt do at least another load and maybe one or two during the week. For five adults, that's not bad. As Nott pointed out, usage will depend on lifestyle (and ages) of the household. My husband, one son and I usually have workout clothes six days a week, two of us might have clothes that are grotty from gardening or painting or something a couple of days a week, there are towels used up to seven or eight times a day, five lots of sheets weekly, and the two younger boys have sports clothing once or twice a week.... plus the usual underwear and office clothing, school uniforms, etc...
