Browse Forums Laundry 1 Jul 27, 2012 5:03 pm Hi, We are in the process of designing our new home! We have three children, so a rumpus room seemed to be a "must"! Someone suggested having a laundry behind bi-fold doors, and it seems to fit perfectly at the end of the rumpus room! Seemed to be a great idea to me to be able to fold, iron, sort clothing in the rumpus room where I can also be helping kids with homework, chatting to them of an evening! But.... I've never seen one before, never heard of anyone who's had one. My questions are: 1) what would be advantages, disadvantages that YOU see (maybe some that I haven't thought of). 2) What sort of doors would you have, bifold or sliding?? The wall would be approx 4m wide. I've designed it so that behind the doors, the whole wall would be filled with cupboards, benchroom, tub and washing machine dryer. Would also have a laundry chute thingy happening down the hallway, which would be a little cupboard we can open from the hallway that would be connected through the wall into the laundry cupboard. Save having to go into the rumpus room, opening the bifold/sliding doors to deposit dirty laundry etc. Thnaks so much for your help and any other suggestions you have for me! Re: Laundry behind sliding or bifold door in Rumpus Room?? 2Jul 27, 2012 5:41 pm A friend of mine has exactly that arrangement and she hates it. That said, I think the main problem is the lack of space - she doesn't have anything like 4m of width. If you have enough built-in cabinets and plenty of bench space, it would probably work ok from an ergonomic/efficiency point of view. But a couple of other things to consider are: - Venting and/or an exhaust fan would be a must, or you could end up with a nasty mould problem. - The noise of the washing machine or dryer might be irritating if your rumpus room is going or be used for TV watching or other quiet activities. You might need to consider some sort of sound proofing? Re: Laundry behind sliding or bifold door in Rumpus Room?? 3Jul 30, 2012 11:03 am Bifolds have the advantage of little dead space which might be useful but you'll have to plan for how they triangulate out into the room. A sliding door means that a part of the door will be in front of a section of your laundry. In a shared space like a rumpus room, you would have to be the super organised type as you don't really want laundry mess intruding into the rumpus. It has fantastic organisational ideas for laundry that exists along one wall that you could incorporate. The vertically stacked sorting basket would work very well as you don't want piles of washing for sorting on the floor of your rumpus. Also the drying rail would be very useful. Make sure you allow for needing to soak clothes. Perhaps a double sink? Or even just a space for a bucket to sit. The person who made the point about ventilation made a good one. You also want to think about flooring. You need a waterproof floor. Washing machine hoses should be changed every 2 years and since hardly anyone does that (!), leaks/floods are very common. From the information posted it looks to me your rumpus room is nothing more than extended garage. That will present a number of challenges. Could any of these be asbestos? Best to leave as it is or clean up? Thank you for your thoughts 0 8071 |
