Browse Forums Laundry 1 Nov 24, 2011 8:00 pm Hi, you were all so helpful with my last question and you gave us some good things to think about. One thought that we were wondering about what you thought of having two laundries? We are a family of 11 so we have a lot of clothes. We were/are planning on having a laundry next to the garage with a large storeroom and then a toilet/shower attached to it and also a mud room - so that you come from outside into the mudroom/laundry, but then we thought it would be easier with the children to have a laundry upstairs where there bedrooms are, for washing sheets, towels and for when the children wet their beds. So would 2 launderies be a bit strange or is it a good idea? Thanks Rose and family Re: Two Laundries 2Nov 24, 2011 8:30 pm I only have one laundry, which is conveniently in a cupboard as part of the kitchen. Very nice. We will be extending downstairs one day, where most of the bedrooms are and access to the backyard and I'm thinking about having a second laundry down there. So, maybe not such a strange idea. Re: Two Laundries 4Nov 25, 2011 9:23 pm Hi Rose (and family ) I did read your earlier post/question about the bedrooms etc - and I take my hat off to you caring for and managing a family of 11 . I see some of the others are suggesting perhaps two laundry's might be the way to go... and if you have the $$, by all means go for it. But if it comes down to sacrifice or compromise, I reckon better to have one big utility laundry - probably with two washing machines - and save the space you would have used on the 2nd laundry to devote back to family/living space - for eg perhaps a 2nd (or 3rd??) study for the kids??? With 9 kids mostly sharing rooms, they might be better served with extra space to be able to quietly study - or a smaller TV room or something?? Or even a small/spare bedroom? Dunno, just putting ideas out there. But like I said, if you have all the space you think you need living wise, and can afford it, then by all means go for 2 laundries. (Don't forget, they also cost more to fit out than what it would be to just have a non-plumbed room. Good luck with your plans - how exciting to be in a position to be able to design and build a dream home for a family of 11. I look forward to keeping an eye on how things go with it all. I put a larger laundry in our place it works well being able to have the ironing board left up, room for an indoor line, and a large bench to fold the washing on. I agree with Take2 that it would be more benificial to have one larger laundry than 2 separate ones - can see the point of 2 washing machines if you have very large family but I think 2 separate areas would just create more work - better to have one large space for sorting, ironing, dirty washing baskets etc IMO - ie one double size laundry would be far better IMO than 2 ordinary size ones. Upstairs laundries would mean all wet washing would have to be lugged downstairs to hang out (unless you use a dryer all the time?) - probably address above issues better by having one of those laundry chutes that transport washing directly from upstairs to the downstairs laundry. I think they are relatively common in 2 story homes - I'm sure your builder would be familiar with them. Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
