Browse Forums Laundry 1 May 10, 2009 1:22 pm Hi all, Just wondering if any of you have found that the standard door installed by your builder for your laundry (leading to outside) is a hollow core door? Hubby and I thought this was a security issue, since a deadlock on a hollow core door isn't very effective and laundries are usually located at the side or rear of a property...perfect for a break-in. We've now 'upgraded' to a solid door and it seemed to us that most people would, since hollow core doors can be kicked in quite easily. The Just "smash glass & open" type. However, I’ve got an internal on the laundry that has the dead lock. I would recommend that to anyone. The 1/2 glass lets in great light, which I love, but hey what can you do. I also sleep with a shot gun under my bed. lol Wise move to get a new door. Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 5May 10, 2009 4:19 pm Our laundry door is full glass, and I don't have any concerns about it. It's not really an issue that bothers me much. In 28 years and four different homes - none of which had solid external doors until this one - I was burgled once. And that had nothing to do with the door, but everything to do with the crappy lock the owner had on my rented unit. Also my elderly and mostly hard of hearing neighbours. Never rent a unit in a block full of old people..... You could upgrade the door to a solid one, or add a security door - either would make it a little harder for potential burglars. But serge44 is right - if someone really wants to get in, a door isn't going to stop them. I don't lie awake at night worrying about it. We have good locks, an alarm and a decent insurance policy. King Willy, I hope you're kidding about the gun... Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 6May 10, 2009 4:44 pm Hahahaha! I'm certainly not laying awake at night worrying about it but I just wanted to know what people thought. I just figured (how naive of me!!) that a builder would supply and fit as standard a solid core door at an entrance/exit point. Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Get a solid door, it's not a huge cost. But make sure you have deadlocks too and insurance.... Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 8May 10, 2009 6:00 pm My laundry door will be glass.... like all my windows. If they want to get in, they'll get in unfortunately. Like kek said, do the deterrent stuff and have good insurance. I wanted light and a great feel in my laundry as it is a work area. I wasn't prepared to sacrifice the feel I wanted for the possibility of someone getting in. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. It will not be hard for burglars to break in =( I will probably get a security door in the future =) Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 10May 10, 2009 11:21 pm If someone wants to get in, they'll get in. Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 12May 11, 2009 8:56 pm We had a choice of a solid door or sliding glass door and we went with glass like joles because of the light. I think you should go for the look and feel you want and like the rest of posters said get an alarm system hooked up and the necessary insurance and enjoy your home Re: Laundry Doors: Security Issue or Not? 14May 12, 2009 9:05 am blessedpeople We had a choice of a solid door or sliding glass door and we went with glass like joles because of the light.
