Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Aug 21, 2017 12:43 pm I am finalising the kitchen layout and design for our new build. Originally I thought I'd include the upgrade to integrated dishwasher through the builder, but it seems quite expensive so am now thinking we'll buy our own. The dishwasher is on the end of the bench before going into the pantry and is visible from the dining area, hence trying to make it blend in. I'm planning to have a finished bench height of 920mm with 40mm stone tops, so 880mm under bench height. Having a quick look online it seems 820mm or 860mm seems to be the standard heights? How does this work? Also, if we do end up getting an integrated dishwasher what do I need to plan for? Do they sit on top of the kickboard framing or are they freestanding? Do I need to buy a matching kitchen door for the front and would the builder (a large volume builder) be likely to add that? Half of me says it's easier to get them to include it and they work it all out, but the upgrade is almost twice the price I could buy one from Good Guys. Is that because of the kitchen cupboard door etc? Thanks. Second Time 'Round Re: Dishwasher height and maybe integrated? 2Aug 22, 2017 4:34 pm You'll find both integrated and built-in dishwashers are basically the same size, except an integrated dishwasher has a front that accepts a door/panel to match your existing cupboards. Since they are the same height as a built-in, an integrated dishwasher will also need to have a matching kicker-panel (that part below your cupboards) so it matches the rest of your cabinetry. Generally integrated dishwashers do not have visible controls while closed; eg the controls are often placed on the inside top of the door and only visible when the door is slightly ajar. Some of the integrated F&P dishdrawers used to have basic on/off and indicator light that was affixed on the panel to their integrated models. Similar to you when we built, the builders dishwasher was supplied as integrated which we left in the butlers pantry. We preferred the F&P dishdrawers but it wasn't worth deleting the builders dishwasher as you don't get much of a credit and a second one has come in handy) so we had a provision in the kitchen so we could add one later (which we did, but just a built-in dishdrawer). The F&P dishdrawer, is designed to line up with standard cupboards and even has a built-in kicker the same height as the cupboard kicker. You can even add your own panel to the kicker so it matches the kicker on the rest of the cupboards so it is sort of semi integrated. The reason why the integrated dishwashers are more expensive, apart from the builders markup of course, is the additional cost of the front panel, installation and door handles to match the rest of your cupboards. If you really want to integrate the dishwasher so it's not obvious, I would pay the premium and have your builder do it. If you know which model dishwasher you want, try looking up the installation documentation on the internet. If you still want to do it yourself to save some money, you may be able to gauge how easy/difficult it is to do yourself. You could always ask the builder to supply a matching cupboard door that you attach yourself.
