In the house we are to build, we are looking at upgrading our oven/cooktop to 900mm. Would like some advice on whether to get a gas or an electric oven. It seems most ovens are electric these days. Which do people prefer? Also are there any benefits to getting freestanding vs split? (considering the oven will be located directly under the cooktop anyway). For our current separate system, the dials for the cooktop always get splashed with whatever we cook. That's why I would prefer to have them combined with the oven dials out of the way. But my mum's freestanding dials get hot from the air coming out of the oven! Help please! Corner block, lake view, custom design Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 2Jul 08, 2008 9:05 pm Hi Scribe,
I'm no expert, but I find that electric ovens distribute a more even heat. I much prefer them to gas. The opposite with cooktops for me. I love gas cooktops and hate electric. I am having a freestanding dual fuel cooker but I love the look of the all in one. It really is just personal preference though. Lots of people hate the all in one look. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 4Jul 08, 2008 9:19 pm I think it's mainly personal preference.
I like electric oven and gas cooktop. We lived at my mum's while our house was being built, she has electric hotplates and I Hated them. They take ages to heat up and then more ages to cool down. You can't just turn off the heat under a saucepan and leave it there because it will keep cooking. I also found them hard to adjust - i am too used to judging by the size of the flame. She also has a gas oven but that was ok although I don't think you can adjust it as low as electric. It didn't seem to distribute the heat as even;y but that may have been because it was an older model. Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 5Jul 08, 2008 9:29 pm Yes, another one here with gas cook top/electric oven.
This was the combination recomended to me when we renovated our kitchen 8 years ago, can't remember why but definetly prefer gas cooktop, cooking heat can be adjusted instantly and accurately. Not a fan of free standing ovens because of the gap at the side, which always gets grotty, I am so much happier with my built in unit. Just a basic unit, we're not gourmet cooks but has worked well for us. Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 6Jul 08, 2008 9:52 pm Thanks for so many replies - I new I could count on you!
I am definitely going gas for cooktop. Still unsure about the oven, but it looks like there are more choices for electric, therefore more chance of a bargain?? I had orignally planned to install the appliances after building, hence my choice of freestanding. The builder has said we can choose our own and they will install it, in which case built-in could still be an option. I agree with you Helyn about the gaps at the sides - can imagine all sorts of food/dust would manage to make it's way in there. Corner block, lake view, custom design Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 7Jul 08, 2008 10:54 pm I'm either or for free standing or seperate- if it's going to be undernearth - then make little diff IMO - except for as Helyn says.
Re the gas overn or electric - I have gas at present and have had large gas and large electric in a cafe and the electric is a better way to cook cakes etc, and gas is better for roasts. So it's really a case of what do you cook most - and also what do you think energy costs will be in the future. I'm going gas gas with my next one, but that would be induction/gas if the running ot he power was not so high and I didnt have mains gas.'and if induction was not so leading edge OTT expensive. Steve Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 8Jul 08, 2008 10:57 pm if we would be on mains gas I'd be going gas/gas as I prefer gas ovens and gas cook tops. but since we aren't I'm going all electric. ( not worth having gas purely for a cook top when nothing else in the house uses gas) Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 11Jul 08, 2008 11:11 pm Kez said Quote: not worth having gas purely for a cook top when nothing else in the house uses gas) This hasd been discussed before - but gas cooktop uses about 1 large bottle per year at most - (filled via a truck) so it;s very easy to have a gas stove and enjoy ti versus electric. Consider it - or go induction. Steve Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 12Jul 08, 2008 11:13 pm I'm going for electric oven and induction cooktop. I'll have no need for gas in my house, thereby saving a service fee. But if I was in a natural gas area... or was building a house where a gas hws was going to be used we would have had a gas stove top and if i'd been able to talk Dh into it a gas oven. We only deviated from this plan when we got the chance to get the solar hws at a fabulous price. Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 14Jul 09, 2008 7:48 am Whatever is most important to you KexKez,
I had a house with nothing else but an LPG gas stove connected and the run of the pipe from the twwin 40kg bottles outside was around 5 meters. But I understand your point. So did you go induction cooktop? Steve Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 15Jul 09, 2008 8:23 am I am presently on bottled gas - new house will fortunately be on mains gas, even though its only 1km away it is in the mains gas area whilst this house is not - anyway we use bottled gas for cooktop and for a heater in the dining room. The cooktop alone uses hardly any gas, bottle easily lasts all summer when we are not using the heater as well, BUT the gas rental company charges an annual rental fee, per bottle, if you want 2 bottles just in case you run out on weekend or at night, they charge you twice and this cost ends up way out of proportion to your gas usage costs, therefore not cost effective IMO.
May be different story where you live though? Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 16Jul 09, 2008 8:52 am I am having a split - gas cooktop and gas oven... quite happy with it... but the new house will have a freestanding gas cooktop with electirc oven (because it is a free upgrade)... i am not sure if there is any advantage or disadvantage... i think i will find out once i start using it...
If just look at it, i do like the look of freestanding unit... But I understand your point. So did you go induction cooktop? Steve Nope because we didn't want to have to replace nearly all of our cooking pots. It isn't an elements one though but the type with the ceramic ? top. I had a long conversation with a chef friend before we took the plunge and pulled gas out of the house and he said to avoid the element type. I know what we've picked is not as good as induction. Just something to get used to . As much as it would have been nice. there are times when you can't have everything. And the gas pipe would have had to run at least 20 m. Probably closer to 25m if they'd not run it in a direct diagonal line. Assuming they prefer not to cross open ground but run it along a house wall before crossing the slab. Nothing to stop the stove being replaced a few years down the track with an induction version though. Re: Gas vs Electric Oven 18Jul 09, 2008 9:36 am Sorry, KK, I am no expert, however, is it possible that a gas pipe would run under the slab , what if it bursts Our pipe runs in the roof space, so I would have thought that in the case of bottled gas you could have it just outside your kitchen
Unfortunately I do not believe the builders, when we build our house, 23 years ago, the buider said that because the main gas pipe was on the other side of the road we would have to pay at least $800 for the connection plus aditional cost for the stove. At that time we declined and had gas connected 18 years later when I found out that the main gas pipe was in my front garden!!!! and wait for this it cost us only $220!!! Maggie One of our entertaining areas is outside the kitchen. this will be a huge verandah affair with beautiful views of state forrest. Access on the kitchen side of the house for gas bottles wouldn't have suited us or the house design or orientation on the block. ( it would also have been fully exposed and facing out on to the main street area as we are on a corner block) hmm not sure if the pipe goes under the house slab or through the roof but either way the distance was quite substantial. Mains gas is + 35 kms away. I did have to contemplate long and hard as we do hope to eventually put an outdoor spa in this area and I know heating them with gas ( mains gas) is far cheaper than with electricity. BUT heating with bottled gas comes in more expensive than either.
