Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Dec 31, 2011 8:09 am Our new build is in a place without natural gas. I've had some great advice elsewhere on whether to look at LPG or solar for hot water, the other big question is whether I can cope without a gas hob. My main concern is that I stir-fry a lot and from what I've read, the induction hobs just don't give you enough heat. One option could be to get an electric wok but I've seen very mixed reviews of those. Would love to hear any views / experience in what it's like to change from gas to induction. Not all produce the same heat. Some only have 1 hob that goes high. So look around. The electrolux induction cook tops are good value and they are made in germany. They have boost on all four or all three burners. I made a sti fry the other day (for the first time ). I bought a cheap wok from coles ($11 on special). I had the setting on 8 initially they brought back to 7 (highest in 9) But then I still had the boost setting. Can I cope without Gas? 3Dec 31, 2011 1:34 pm I have had a gas cooker for the last 10 years and always planned on gas for the new house but after looking at a ceramic hot plate it will be so much easier to clean and looks cleaner as its smooth rather then seeing the hobs etc. I figure I will give it ago and if I don't like it then I can switch to a gas one. We have also built an all electric house-we have relied on bottled gas in the past at one of our previous builds and this time elected to have full electricity with solar boosted hot water, induction cooktop and small solar unit on the roof (1.5kw I think it is). We are on tank water and a septic system. After 12 months in the house we are averaging a cost of $65/month for our electricity! Not bad considering every time we flush a toilet or turn a tap on we are using the electric pump! So yes, you can do without gas! Not surprisingly there are mixed views on gas vs induction vs ceramic. However, having had some very helpful advice on another post re what Hot Water System to look at , I think we will almost certainly be getting a gas boosted solar HWS so that answers the problem - we will have LPG for that so can have a gas hob as well. Even if a heat pump system is recommended rather than solar, we may still decide to have gas just for cooking - really love my gas hob and I actually think it gives the kitchen some sort of centrepiece Think I just need to go with my instinct which is shouting GAS!!! If you want a hot shower in the morning, then you will be boosting a lot. If you don't have a North facing roof, then you will be boosting a lot. If your area has many cloudy days, then you will be boosting a lot. This is from a friend's experience having solar hot water in Sydney. My plumber actually had his solar hot wat removed, as he found he was boosting a lot. The heat pumps work well if you can use off-peak, and use more in the mornings, but can be noisy. As far as cooktop goes, it's personal preference, but we have been happy, with our Siemens induction, as it's faster than most gas hobs (having used one for the past week whilst we were away), and it's easy to clean. Neil Perry uses induction exclusively in his Sydney restaurant, Spice Temple, a Chinese themed restaurant; I'm not sure if you would be doing more stir frying than a commercial kitchen. Re: Can I cope without Gas? 8Jan 03, 2012 6:26 pm ceramic scratches! Even when you are being careful. Perhaps worse to look at because we have a black ceramic top. I am very disappointed at how much and wish I'd just bitten the bullet and insisted on having lpg gas for my stove now. This certainly doesn't look good. I would be engaging with an independent inspector to have a look at this. As for the unscheduled site visits, most builders are quite… 1 28419 Elvis has left the building...
