Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Sep 14, 2011 3:40 pm Hi everyone, Im after some advice about getting a dishwasher.I am a married to a domestically challenged male, and have 3 teen sons , who are pretty slack at helping around the house[and dishwashing turns into a noisy messy affair].I have never had a dishwasher or even used one, but im deadset on getting one in my new kitchen. After a bit of research on the forum Ive decided on a Bosch I think, but am really unsure of which one?Any suggestions? I really dont have any idea of what options I should be getting, ie, load options, cyles etc etc!!also looking at a max budget of @$1200. any advice appreciated. Re: I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 2Sep 14, 2011 5:24 pm We have an Asko, love it to bits. Its 2.5 years old. The selling point for me was that the plate racks on the bottom shelf fold down. This lets me lay my pots and baking dishes flat. I have heard good things about the Bosch too. Keep in mind, you will more than likely find the dishes still in the sink or on the counter. I havent figured out how to train domestically challenenged boys how to stack a dish washer... maybe i should put a cookie in there?? Surprisingly, they do know where to go for clean dishes. Problem is, they only unload what they need. Dont know much about the options, but in terms of price E & S trading seem to have some great deals (http://www.estrading.com.au/home/w1/i2/) Re: I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 5Oct 24, 2011 11:13 am Hi Mary, Did I just read that you have never had a dishwasher?! Your life is about to change! I just got a new dishwasher and love it, they clean so much better then they used to. Mine is a Bosch Semi Integrated SMI50E25AU for $1220. The things I wanted were: Top shelf to be adjustable for long stemmed wine glasses Delayed start option Time remaining showing Quick cycle option Semi integrated A lot of the dishwashers these days have very long wash cycles (my normal cycle is 2.20mins I think) something to do with conserving water and I don't really think you will get around it. That's why I wanted one with the quick cycle option. It is quiet, we can be in the kitchen at the bench and still be talking but it's usually on at night so don't hear it. The one thing I'm not sure it does very well is drying, We put ours on at night and when I open it in the morning there is still wetness and the plastic containers are never dry. This wasn't really a dealbreaker for me as I just open it and let it air dry for a bit. The option to fold the bottom flat is good too for big items. Not sure about place settings, it is just the two of us so wasn't really an issue. Get the sons into good habits right from the start about who loads/unloads. I unload in the morning so dishes go straight in during the day and then goes on at night but you might have more dishes than me. Re: I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 6Oct 25, 2011 9:14 pm Just brought a Bosch and cannot speak highly enough of it. The model I brought was the SMU68M05AUSS. Prior to this the only place I have lived that had a dishwasher was in a rental when I lived in London, the brand theere was NEFF. Wasn't a bad machine, but the new Bosch run's rings around it, which it should too considering the NEFF was probably about 10 years old. This is the model we have and I see universal love for Bosch dishwashers on many forums. But in my view this is not a good dishwasher. It is exceptionally quiet. It has many wash options including a very good short cycle, it uses almost no water, it looks great. BUT...we have found it does not wash dishes very well. And I think it is because this machine just uses so little water. Every wash we have at least one or two dishes that still have food on them. The other thing it does not do well is dry. I like the idea of saving water usage but when it comes at the expense of not properly washing the load then it is a bit pointless. I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 8Nov 26, 2011 6:00 am Hi We had a Bosch in our last house and it was fantastic. In the new place we were planning on installing an Bosch SBV63M00AU fully integrated unit, but yesterday I spotted a new one from Electrolux. The model number is ESL67040R. It looks good and is about $400 cheaper than the Bosch. Does anyone have any experience with Electrolux dishwashers? The same model is also sold as an AEG, and apart from the AEG having a 5 year warranty vs 2 I can't see any difference in features. Paul Re: I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 9Nov 26, 2011 6:40 am paulw11 Hi Does anyone have any experience with Electrolux dishwashers? Paul We had an electrolux in a rental we have just moved out of, In a word terrible. Main complaint was the racks, nothing fit cups and glasses would fall over and it was noisy. Friends of ours just installed a Siemens which came out on top of a recent choice survey and they are very happy. We are going for a Miele which is quite a bit more expensive than the Bosch. Reason.... the racking system is great and it self opens at the end of the drying cycle, simple but effective way to dry everything. Re: I need help picking a dishwasher!!! 10Nov 26, 2011 7:17 am The first dishwasher we ever got was in our previous house. It was a Westinghouse, and it was fantastic. We made sure we got the top model though, and it even had an internal light. Just looking at their website now it looks like things have changed a bit since we bought that one over 5 years ago, and I'm not sure where they stand in the pecking order of things now, but ours was built like a truck and we never had a problem with it. We have a Technika now, it came with the house, and while it does the job it is flimsy by comparison. Admittedly though it has been fault free for over 3 years now, except for once when it wouldn't begin its cycle because the inlet filter was blocked (easily fixed). It's not the sort of brand that I'd rush into a shop to buy though. Bosch have always had a good reputation. Geoff - Decophile.
