Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances Re: Where's your toaster? 21Aug 09, 2011 4:33 pm I have had 'utility' cupboards in both the houses I have built and will definately be putting one in the new house too..... toaster, kettle, coffee machine and sandwich toaster all plugged in & ready to go.... close the doors & kitchen looks great!! Re: Where's your toaster? 22Aug 09, 2011 7:18 pm Haaaaate stuff on the bench! We added an appliance cupboard to our kitchen to keep the most-used gadgets out of sight except when being used. A butler's pantry would have been even better, but no room. Drat! Re: Where's your toaster? 23Aug 12, 2011 11:11 am Ours is on the bench at the moment (next to the nespresso machine, kettle and convection oven!) When we get our new kitchen (and finally get a proper oven!) I want to have it in a cupboard that you can roll the door up or slide it open to access. I had one of these in a rental years ago and loved the idea of being able to hide it away, especially when you have an open planned kitchen/living space. We put 2 power points in ours. However make sure you shelf spacing is higher above where you plan on putting your appliances. We have our toaster, kettle, blender and sandwich maker all set up in the pantry with plates in there as well. Its a one stop shop for all things untidy. Re: Where's your toaster? 26Aug 12, 2011 2:07 pm I'm in the - a home is somewhere you live and not a display - camp. So I expect my appliances to be out and available for use. Having said that I wanted them to co-ordinate so I have purcahsed the hi-gloss black toaster and kettle by De'Longhi which also co-ordinates with the coffee maker I bought for DH for his birthday. They will all sit out proudly on display - the same goes for my microwave and fridge/freezer - it is a kitchen after all. I cant be doing clutter as I plate up dinner for 7 every night. no canisters, no jars, no biscuit barrell etc all I have out is a knife block so there is room for the cooking pots, roast trays with 4 chooks in etc. I like clear benches (when you live with a lot of people a clear bench is a magic thing!) hence a walk in pantry..with no door. plates are there, butter (as we dont live in oz) etc. You can throw a loaf of bread in the bread maker in 2 seconds cos all the 'stuff' is all to hand. means your kitchen benches are free from crockpots, bread makers and rice cookers...along with the above biscuit stuff!!! so yes, I agree a kitchen is to be lived in, but clear uncluttered space is the best way for a lot of people to live in their kitchens and work. Re: Where's your toaster? 30Aug 12, 2011 7:47 pm the guy wont know where everything has gone! I dont do bending down, so my large drawers have the tupperware and the pots and a spice drawer..so our plates and bowls are on a shelf in there. Dont have to bend down..love it. his toast will never taste so good, and no crummies his used to it kiwi, I change things around all the time, I used to move the furniture all of the time, but that was when I was younger. No lifting, bending for me either anymore, I had a herniated disk in the lower back, pressing on a nerve, a work injury, couldn't feel my leg, foot half the time, pins and needles. It's all good now the back, but I have a problem with my shoulder now another work injury. It's the nature of my job, I should have stayed working in an office, but I do prefer to be out there helping people. Now instead of moving furniture, I move every ornament, cushion, etc... in the house, hubbi not to happy about me moving his beloved toaster . just got to wait for my friend to come and put the points in. 'zacly how I think, kiwi. As a bonus, clear benches make your house look clean. Clutter screams "dirty, disorganised house" to me, even if it's not true. I hate dishes on the sink for the same reason. Immediately after dinner, the dishwasher gets run and the kids wash up and put away pots and any extras that don't fit in the machine. There's an accumulation of papers and general crap on my bench right now and if it's still there when I get back from the gym, my head may explode. Re: Where's your toaster? 33Aug 14, 2011 10:18 am kiwi I think it is more than just wanting to live in a display home, if they are not out, you have more bench space. so yes, I agree a kitchen is to be lived in, but clear uncluttered space is the best way for a lot of people to live in their kitchens and work. Yes, this is me too. I probably sit somewhere in between a 'lived in' look but at the same time and definitely not into clutter. In this instance however, it's more to do with limited bench space. I have one smallish island bench that houses the sink. The spare space on that is my only space for preparation and plating up so sometimes it gets a bit cramped. My other two small bench space areas currently house the toaster and kettle on one side, and the microwave and coffee machine on the other (can you believe they designed/built a new kitchen with nowhere for the microwave ). So.... if my toaster (and bl**dy microwave) could come off the bench somehow, that would be ideal (I can then put the kettle and coffee machine together and free up another area of bench space). I don't have a WIP but I do have shelf space in my pantry (that opens via a sliding door - so it feels quite open and not 'in a cupboard' as such). I would probably need to rejig the shelves - and get a power point - but I think it is do-able. If I was to try and put the toaster (and the microwave) on a shelf in the pantry how much space should I allow between the shelf with the toaster on and the one above?? (my shelves above are kind of 3/4 shelves - they don't go the full depth of the pantry - I think it's to allow the light at the top to get all the way down the pantry - but I would do a full shelf for the toaster/microwave and anything below that will just be storage and doesn't need the light as much - hope that all makes sense). And.... if I did put my toaster in the pantry, is it a must/highly recommended to put in an exhaust fan?? Is it just for smell (which I could probably live with) or is it recommended for safety purposes of some kind?? HHCIB Re: Where's your toaster? 34Aug 14, 2011 10:42 am Yes, I guess I am on middle ground with things on bench - I like things neat without being obsessive about it - a few things of your choice neatly on bench is fine by me - I have over 4m of bench so space to work with is not my issue - I never put the kettle away as I use it several times a day - as previously stated I do put toaster away - but then I only use that couple of times a week, just not big toast eaters here. Quote: And.... if I did put my toaster in the pantry, is it a must/highly recommended to put in an exhaust fan?? I would of thought the steam from toasters, microwaves, kettles, other hot food appliances would create moisture in the pantry and this would not be good for items which keep better in cool dark of pantries - probably no big deal for tinnned food but not great for jams, preserves, spuds, onions, pasta, biscuits etc. Re: Where's your toaster? 35Aug 14, 2011 10:53 am Hmmmm.... yes I wonder?? I definitely wouldn't have my kettle in there, it would just be toaster and microwave. Maybe someone else knows a bit more about what 'should' be done in these instances or if there are any standards. Thanks Helyn. HHCIB Re: Where's your toaster? 36Aug 14, 2011 11:42 am We have an appliance cupboard. It has power points inside the cupboard and a little door that opens to the side. Frequently used items such as toaster, kettle and a little milkshake machine that the kids use sit there already plugged in ready to use. We just slide the items out onto the bench , slide them back in and close the door when not in use. Above that main level we have shelves for other appliances (toasted sandwich maker, slow cooker, mixmaster etc.) These can be accessed from a door at the front. We just pull them out and put them on the bench when in use and then straight back into the appliance cupboard. I don't like the clutter out on the bench getting in the way and a butler's pantry wouldn't work in our household Re: Where's your toaster? 37Aug 14, 2011 12:15 pm So just wondering what clearance you guys have between the shelf that houses the toaster and the shelf above? Or any indication on how much I should allow? Currently my space allowance is only 380mm so I suspect not quite high enough to allow for the likes of a toaster (it will fit - but just taking about clearance for smoke from scorched toast and the like). I'll need to move one of the shelves in my pantry (and it's not one of those shelves that you can just move the 'pegs' and adjust, they are kind of built in, so it will require some handy work and will become once again permanent (more or less) so I need to get it right. Thanks.... HHCIB Re: Where's your toaster? 38Aug 14, 2011 2:00 pm kek, whoaooa! me too! ...hhcib ( cool shortened name!!) I dont know re exhaust fan. I havent bothered..but we rarely burn toast so a fire alarm is prob better we dont have a microwave in the pantry , that sits under the bench next to the oven. I would think the microwave wouldnt really need an exhaust..I mean , 3 mins for some peas, aint going to heat up the pantry. if you use it a lot though then you might want one here is my kitchen plan..we have an appliance cupboard (like miss, but a bigger one) with bi fold door next to the sink and then an open pantry with no door as you can see, it doesnt face the public so no need for a door. Exactly this for us too, I use the toaster daily. I just don't have an issue with getting it out and putting it away. --- - *coming to you from the iPhone, while sitting on my backside* Re: Where's your toaster? 40Aug 14, 2011 2:20 pm We have had toaster & microwave in the pantry in our last two builds-never had need for an exhaust fan but both pantries had plenty of ventilation (one was 1.5m x 1.5m, this one is something like 3.5 x 3m).
