Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Jul 18, 2011 9:24 pm Hi We are building the majestic 35 with Wisdom Homes. It comes with a very large pantry space. We will fit out the pantry ourselves after handover with a combo of benches and open shelving. I am keen to put the fridge in here and use the Fridge space in the kitchen as bench with under drawers and over cupboards. I do all the cooking and food prep in the home. Hubby pretty much only cooks his toast or banana bread on a weekend. Our main use of the pantry will be (the kitchen dumping ground) the things that always end up on the benches ie mobile phones charging, notes for the kids school etc. do you think this would work or do you think we would regret it in the end. Hubby thinks that it will be a pain to walk an extra metre to get a drink. I personally do not like the look of the fridge and would like it in the pantry. No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 2Jul 18, 2011 9:45 pm For me personally I would prefer the fridge close to the benches - only for ease of access and being able to watch children getting into said fridge! At the end of the day only you and your family need to live there so build what suits your needs - I have hidden my microwave in my pantry whilst others prefer it out in the main kitchen, because this is what I wanted. Some things are worth waiting for. No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 3Jul 18, 2011 10:12 pm I have read that there should be a "work triangle" when designing a kitchen. The points being stove, sink and fridge. If these points are close it allows for efficient movement through the kitchen, it will also limit traffic through this area. But it is what you like. My mum has her fridge in the pantry and loves it. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 4Jul 18, 2011 10:30 pm I wanted a butlers pantry with the fridge and freezer in there as well as I'm like you ... not fussed on the look of them. How practical it would be and whether it would annoy me after awhile I don't know, but I loved the idea. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 5Jul 18, 2011 10:31 pm I would ask how long you intend to be in the house....it may affect resale. I have my upright freezer in the pantry but the fridge is in the kitchen (although not visible unless you stand in front of it!) Would you do this? 6Jul 18, 2011 10:36 pm I would hate to have to open the pantry door everytime i wanted to use the fridge. Our fridge is opened frequently, milk for cups of tea, fruit, morning tea, lunch etc. We got the ice/ water fridge and its so handy. Also agree potential buyers, esp with kids may not like the fridge space in the pantry. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 7Jul 18, 2011 11:24 pm I see two drawbacks perhaps? It might be inconvenient for somebody who just wants to get a drink when somebody else is preparing a meal but that depends on the layout and I suppose you can say the same thing about any kitchen depending on the layout. The other drawback is the fridge might heat up a small enclosed space like a pantry if it isn't ventilated enough but I dunno if it heats up so much to really matter. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 8Jul 18, 2011 11:52 pm Hey Cass, We both loved the idea when we were looking around at display homes that had the fridge in the pantry. Then spoke to someone else who had done it in a home they had built 2 years ago. They have already had the pantry door hinges replaced as they have worn out because of how many times they opened the pantry door. When we thought about it the fridge in our house with 4 people is opening and closing all the time. Would you do this? 9Jul 19, 2011 7:37 am I recently renovated my kitchen and chose not to include the fridge in the kitchen. As it is a small kitchen, this meant that I could have floor to ceiling cupboards in place of the fridge (tonnes more storage), and the fridge lives happily in the laundry right next door (about 2.5-3 steps away from where it would live in the kitchen anyway). On the plus side, I think keeping the fridge out of the kitchen makes it feel more like a 'room' than a kitchen and it means that I can have any size fridge without having to consider the size of the 'hole' left for it. On the downside... Well... I don't really see a downside. I suppose it is slightly less convenient when cooking, but you definitely get used to it very quickly and learn how to 'economise' your trips to the fridge by thinking about what you need and grabbing it out all at once. Given the choice, I would never have a fridge in my kitchen again. But, people think I'm weird like that. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 10Jul 19, 2011 8:01 am we have a large fench pair fridge in our kitchen, with the usual stuff. It has ice/water in door etc. we use the freezer for foods, meals. Fridge has cheeses, meats, food prep (mayo etc) and foods we are temp storing like left overs, pizzas etc. We also have a smaller 600lt fridge in our pantry which we use heaps, kids milk, does all breakfast stuff, sweets in freezer. we use the pantry fridge more because of it's position and items. We love having it set up this way, and wouldn't change it. I'm not sure why we do it this way, but it works awesome for us. I say do what you want, it will work in the end! Would you do this? 11Jul 19, 2011 8:33 am I like the look of a no fridge Kitchen, makes the kitchen look more streamline and clean. But for us, was more practical to have the fridge near working areas of the kitchen. It you have working bench space in the Pantry nearest to the fridge to do common things like get milk for tea of coffee, get butter for the bread etc. this can work. Then you can plan your trip to the fridge when you cook your meals. DH does most of the cooking so he preferred the fridge in the kitchen near bench space but really it is up to hot you cook and what you like. Even if it may seem inconvenient at to have a fridge in the pantry, I know many people adjust to it and its not a big deal to them. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 12Jul 19, 2011 8:49 am thanks for the varied responses. My hubby is just thinking of resale down the track, which I suppose I agree but i just don't like the look of our fridge but it works fine so I will not replace it just because of the look of it. In the end I am sure we will end up with a fridge in the kitchen. I was just looking for a bit of a backup for my side of the argument of fridge or no fridge with hubby... ![]() I still think for looks it would look better in the pantry... will have to keep trying to find a good reason to sell to him... ![]() Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 13Jul 19, 2011 9:30 am If you don't like the look of a fridge in the kitchen have you thought about an integrated model? I think someone on this forum chose this for their kitchen but atm I can't think who it was...maybe someone else can help? My fridge is white, as are the other appliances, because I feel these blend in better with my white gloss kitchen, stainless appliances (imho) are too much of a contrast, besides being a pain to keep clean. One house we owned didn't have space in the kitchen for the upright freezer and it had to go in the (huge) laundry and that was a pita, so I would never choose to have the fridge out of the kitchen as it's used more often than a freezer. I would never buy a house that didn't have a large space in the kitchen for a fridge, then again it's your house so you should do what suits you, unless you are planning to sell sooner rather than later. Would you do this? 16Jul 21, 2011 9:39 am We are planning on putting our spare fridge which now lives in the garage into the pantry when we build and will certainly be looking into the integrated one for the kitchen. Love the clean streamline look of no fridge too. In the end, do what's right and would work for you and your family. Don't get too bogged down with resale. Everyone's taste are very different. ![]() Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 17Jul 21, 2011 10:41 am We have our fridge in the pantry. I love it and would do it again if I ever built. We have the toaster, sandwich press, milkshake maker, blender, etc all in the pantry on the bench and there's also a sink in there. It's great because if someone wants a snack they get it in the pantry and out of the way of anyone cooking in the kitchen. It's no further away than it would have been in it's original spot. We altered the original fridge place in the kitchen and made it into a phone/bills nook with bench and overhead cupboards and a stool underneath. Now all that crap that usually accumulates on the kitchen bench has a place. The other issue is, because it's hidden, it doesn't matter what it looks like. I'm happy to save money and keep our white crappy fridge... but in the main kitchen it would have looked not so great. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I do have an under bench fridge going into the main kitchen for things like milk, butter and everyday use items like drinks though. I guess we will just have to see how it goes. I'm also not planning on moving for a very long time so for me resale isn't an issue. Re: No Fridge in the Kitchen???? Would you do this? 20Aug 11, 2011 7:32 am A fridge with an integrated door seems like the best option.
