Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Jun 29, 2011 11:01 pm We just had our new rangehood delivered, and working out measurements tonight. We are going to have to have the decorative flue cut about 15cms down from the top, so that there is less extension between the bottom of the rangehood and the ceiling. We have a bulkhead recess in our kitchen which cannot be avoided, so we are stuck with it.....and we cannot move too much lower to accomodate because it has to be at least 65cm away from the cooktop. We knew that we would need to cut it when we bought it.....just trying to work out the details of it, now that we have it. I am wondering where you could go to, somewhere like a workshop, where you can take in the flue and ask them to just make a simple straight cut across, 15cms down? My husband thinks he could just cut it himself.....but it is the decorative piece on the front so I want it to look nice and cleanly cut... LOL Does anyone have any suggestions? I am in Western Brisbane, nearby to Sumner Park. Surely there would be somewhere down in Sumner Park, but not sure of what kind of place I am even looking for. Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 2Jun 29, 2011 11:10 pm Since you have to cut 15cms off how about trying to cut just 5cm to see if your cut can be clean? If your husband has the appropriate tools I think that shouldn't be a problem. Another option could be, if your rangehood allows, is to cut the end that goes into the rangehood itself therefore it will be concealed. That way the untouched and clean end is the one meeting the ceiling. The flue of my rangehood is in two parts sliding on each other to allow for adjusting distance under ceiling. It sounds like yours comes with a long flue you need to cut. “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end” http://www.buildinganewhome.com.au Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 3Jun 30, 2011 12:04 am Hi Jervisbay, Yep, I have mentioned that to my husband also....to practice on the first 5cms initially and see how we go lol The rangehood actually comes with 2 parts. 1 part has the vents at the top, and the other part is on the outside and is purely for decoration and extending if needed. With the outside one it actually has a lip on the bottom of it, that allows a few screws to connect into the main part of the rangehood. So I don't think that we can cut the bottom part.....I had thought of that and hiding any uneven edges. Basically we only have about 50cms space to play with, from the ceiling to the maximum distance to the cooktop.....so if we can cut down the decorative flue a little, then we can still extend the 2 parts slightly, but it still ends up fitting into the space we have. I think I will try and get my husband to cut it if possible......hrmmm Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 4Jul 03, 2011 7:05 am Hi Melodie how did you go cutting down the rangehood flue? We have exactly the same problem and DH got it cut down but was not a good job . I think I will have to see whether it would be possible to get another one and get it proffesionally cut, but what trade do you turn to for that help? Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 5Jul 03, 2011 8:12 am Hi Pearl! I ended up going to Metfit Industries in Sumner Park, Brisbane. http://www.metfitindustries.com.au/ Basically any engineering company I was told, that do small jobs. They charged me $20 and they did the perfect cut and smoothed the edge down for me. We were going to do the same in cutting it down ourselves, but thankfully I found these guys first. How much length can you play with? You might be able to still use the one you have, and a company like the one above should be able to just cut close to where you cut originally? I would think? Cheers, Louise Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 6Jul 03, 2011 9:06 am Hi Melodie The overlap is 15ml of the bottom one coming over the top one but unfortunatelly the bottom one is damaged and we would need to remove about 7 ml of it to get rid of the jagged edge. Also there are some scratches on the front piece that he made when trying to put it all together. I think it will probably have to be replaced so maybe have to source one from somewhere. Re: Rangehood flue to be cut down slightly 7Jul 04, 2011 2:35 pm I have cut a few to length and have used a very thin stainless blade on an angle grinder. The blade is no more than 1.5mm thick. The problem with stainless is that when it is heated up by traditional cutting methods it goes blue. If your not confident with and angle grinder then just take it to your local stainless fabricator.
