Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Mar 03, 2011 8:56 pm We're building this year and am deciding on whether to go induction or gas cooktop (Bosch) - I really like the Siemens induction but apparently 2 salesmen have told me that they are more expensive to run and if you use a wok to cook a lot of stir fry's, that the induction is not that great as it doesn't have the heat going around the side of the work like the wok burners. Any advice? We're also getting 2 Bosch ovens on one side and either a steamer oven & microwave on the other side OR a coffee machine & microwave. Does anybody have a steamer oven and do you use it a lot? Re: Induction or gas cooktop plus steamer oven 2Mar 04, 2011 10:59 am Ummm, Siemens=Bosch with slightly higher grade fittings, a better warranty and thats about it. As far as woks go, round bottom woks may require heat up the sides of the bowl but if take a close look at any Asian restaurant they have specially designed burners that don't allow an intense blue flame up the side and have them sitting an apparatus that control how far up the flames go. Flat bottom woks are designed to spread the heat up the sides of the woks from the thick plate in the base. I doubt very much that there would be a great difference in running cost of Bosch to Siemens being made in the same plants and owned by the same company. From what I can find Both the Bosch and Siemens have exactly the same ratings for the elements. Re: Induction or gas cooktop plus steamer oven 3Mar 04, 2011 12:00 pm I chose a SMEG induction cooktop. I saw the Bosch one but it was more expensive. The sales guy didn’t mention anything about one induction cooktop being more expensive to run than another. I think they’re all very good energy wise as they’re concentrating the heat only on the magnetic surface. I haven’t built my house yet so I can’t tell you what induction is like as opposed to gas. I know what you mean though about the wok burner. I was actually thinking of getting an electric wok burner. They’re cheap and seem to work fine. You can get induction cooktops with a wok recess so you can still use a wok on them. I’d be interested to know if anyone uses their steam oven a lot too. I chose a Neff combination steam oven as Neff and Siemens were the only two brands that did a combination oven. The others do steam only. I thought that if I don’t use the steam oven often, at least I can use it as a normal oven and have extra oven space when entertaining. The Bosch oven appliances looked great though and are more affordable. I chose a Neff combination steam oven as Neff and Siemens were the only two brands that did a combination oven. How do you find the Neff combi-steam? I'm considering one as well (or Siemens if we go with Siemens pyro oven over the Neff pyro) more for the aesthetics. Miele does one a well, but doesn't match the Miele pyro we wanted. FWIW, Neff and Siemens would be identical internally, as BSH also owns Neff, and Neff makes the ovens. To answer the induction cooktop question, we have the Siemens, and it does have a higher max power rating, but that's because you can boost two zones (R & L) at the same time, and you can use a higher boost as well (boils 1l water in 40 secs tested on boost). But as I don't have an induction wok burner, and intend to fit the matching Siemens gas wok burner, I find even with flat bottom woks, it doesn't work as well as gas. Re: Induction or gas cooktop plus steamer oven 6Mar 10, 2011 8:25 pm Neff are the cooking specialist in the BSH family and build the Ovens for Siemens & Bosch I would highly recommend Steam Ovens or Combi steams - The Neff combi steam is a fantastic purchase. Whoever told you an Induction does not work well with woks have obviously never used an Induction they are more powerful for wok/frying etc cooking and have lower running costs then Gas (Much quicker in transferring heat) Cant compare Induction is the next step up from Gas also Woks or Frying pans get their heat in their base and flare up the sides! Re: Induction or gas cooktop plus steamer oven 8Mar 11, 2011 9:26 pm Is there a rule regarding the distance between a gas cook top and a glass splash back? We've been told there has to be 200mm and if so we might have to get induction as we can't fit a deep bench top. Re: Induction or gas cooktop plus steamer oven 9Mar 11, 2011 11:02 pm appliance guru Whoever told you an Induction does not work well with woks have obviously never used an Induction they are more powerful for wok/frying etc cooking and have lower running costs then Gas (Much quicker in transferring heat) Cant compare As stated, I have a Siemens induction cooktop, and having used it with a wok (both SS and cast iron), I'd say it's not the same as a good gas wok burner, and you have to use a flat bottom wok, which isn't ideal. Different story if you are using a wok induction cooktop with matching wok (such as Spice Temple is using), but the normal cooktop just doesn't spread the heat up the sides sufficiently. Saying that, most gas wok burner doesn't have a very high energy output, so would be no better I guess. My daughter and son in law are about to start building, they are having a 600mm induction cook top and 900mm oven. It's personal preferance 5 10865 1000000% definitely add insulation.
