Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Feb 12, 2011 2:58 pm DH is adamant that our new kitchen have an induction cooktop. Seeing as I'm designing everything else and basically getting my own way with it all, I'm happy to compromise on the cooktop, even though I'm a gas girl. I've been reading that you need certain kinds of cookware with induction cooktops. Can anyone here recommend cookware as well? Nothing too heavy thanks! Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 3Feb 13, 2011 5:07 pm thanks Are any units sold where the stove top is induction, sitting on top of an oven? In other words, the oven+cooktop all in one? Or are induction cooktops just the top part? If so, can I get any oven I want, and have the induction cooktop sitting on top (space permitting)? A friend has the larger sized induction cooktop and regrets it, saying it was overkill and $1000 extra. I like to cook but I rarely use more than 2 burners at a time. We would need a burner for a big pot of boiling water (for pasta) then another large size for the pot of sauce. Is the 600m enough or will the wider casserole style pots bang in to eachother (something I hate on my wee little gas cooker)? I'm also concerned about repair costs if things get damaged! Any recs for great brands? Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 4Feb 13, 2011 6:35 pm I don't think you can get the ovens sitting on top of the ovens in induction. I THINK you should be able to have an oven under the bench still, don't quote me on that. I believe there is a plate that goes under an induction because there is more heat? Give one of your big electrical stores a call and ask, they were super helpful. As for size, I am getting a 80cm Bosch cooktop, its 4 burner but one of the burners is super big for my nice large frypans. I know there are big 5 burner ones which are a bit over kill. We use 2 mostly, 3 sometimes and on the rare occasion 4. As for your pots fitting your best bet is go into a store see what your options are, get the measurements and see how your pots will fit, some of them can be quite cramped. Recs for brands. Not sure, we went with Bosch we've only heard good things about them. If you want to spend the money you could go Neff/Miele which we were originally going with but I don't love to cook that much lol. Definitely get into a store if you can and ask a million questions if you can Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 6Feb 14, 2011 9:31 am thanks again! I have a Bosch dishwasher and I've been so impressed with it. When I was hunting around for appliances in the past, Bosch was always recommended so I'm pleased to see they have an induction cooktop. My husband had seen those portable induction cooktops so if we end up going with gas, he'd probably want to buy a benchtop one anyway Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 7Feb 14, 2011 5:53 pm If you don't need that many cooking zones, there are units out there with 3 zones in 60cm format. One thing to look out for is the size of the zone; for the largest, you'd want 26 cm as a minimum, with some going to 32 cm. Have to say induction has been great; we have the Siemens, and the heat is controllable and is fast! Very easy to clean as well. Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 8Feb 14, 2011 6:41 pm We've bought a 3-zone induction from DeDietrich, hopefully it'll be installed in about a month (when our house is finished)! It has one big zone - 28cm, a medium - 23cm, and a small one - 16cm. When choosing what you want, we were told to also look at the wattage of each zone, ie. 4600W, 3200W, and 2200W in our case. My parents have induction (Miele) and they love it, hopefully we'll be able to say the same! Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 9Feb 14, 2011 10:07 pm Could always grab something like this: https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/ele ... 0100p.aspx Its the one I will probably get when I get my kitchen reno done in the next month or so.. Anyone got one out of curiosity? Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 10Feb 15, 2011 1:40 pm You can get an induction cooktop and oven all in one but it was rather expensive. Can't remember the brand but a tope end one. I've just bought a baumatic, but haven't installed it yet. Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 11Feb 16, 2011 9:33 pm batch_0695 Could always grab something like this: https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/ele ... 0100p.aspx Don't see the point of the normal electric elements; having used both, once you try induction, you'd never look back, and it's worth the cost of new pots and pans (speaking from experience). Some manufacturers do include "free" induction cookware with the purchase of the cooktop. Re: Induction cooktops and cookware 12Feb 16, 2011 10:08 pm Induction cooktops are awesome concept BUT.....They are 1/3 more efficient than gas. So the price of an induction top over a normal electric or gas top makes it not really worth the extra (until they drop a little more in price). I dont believe so but I have been told that they create a false sense of safety for kids (i dont see it but anyway) for example if a kid touches it at home and knows it doesnt get hot and then stays at grandmas house and touches her non induction thinking its not hot and gets burnt. On the pots and pans, most pots ans pans these days (and definitely the expensive ones) come with the plate on the bottom of them for induction. Just turn the pot upside down and it should have a big thick base and usually printed with 'Induction'. Gas at the time wasn't available; we subsequently put it in for hot water heating, but the cost for the stove by itself wasn't justifiable as it came to $8,000 for the line to the house. As for cookware, just test them with a magnet; magnet sticks, it's induction compatible. I recently went through a similar renovation and move scenario when updating our family home.
