Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Feb 07, 2011 6:47 pm Hi Everyone We are in the process of planning our new kitchen and looking to replace our existing fridge (420 litres) with a new one. Our thoughts are with a fridge that has a 520 litre capacity but talking over with my husband tonight we are wondering whether we should get a bigger one. We have three small children at the moment so a 520 litre would be enough but going forward as they grow we may need more space. What do people have and what brands do you recommend? Thanks Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 2Feb 07, 2011 7:54 pm If you are designing a new kitchen, will the fridge be built in? If so i would make the space big enough for most models incase you are looking to sell. We designed our kitchen to suit a side by side to be built in and several brands and models would have fit the space. Finally got the fridge with the ice/water and love the way it fits and looks. Got the 691L as there are 5 of us here at the moment and one on the way. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 3Feb 08, 2011 2:12 pm Best thing we ever did was design or kitchen to have an upright freezer in the pantry, but not sure if you are building or not. Really depends on how much cold storage(not frozen) you want. We have 4 adults and an 18mth old at our place (out laws actually) but we have 3 fridges and a freezer. I think 600+ is the way to go for you. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 4Mar 07, 2011 9:39 pm That's a million dollar question.. how often do you want to go shopping...
If you prefer buying in bulk to save $$ etc etc .. costco .. going to the markets..etc etc - Clearly go for the biggest sized fridge you're comfortable to buy. I would agree with the prev post.. min 600+ .. We designed the fridge space to take a pigeon pair - but currently - there's a F&P 520L fridge and a wine fridge. Plus a 300L refrigerator parked in the laundry. It's still not enough sometimes..lol. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 5Mar 07, 2011 10:16 pm Agree with thinking about your cycle of buying food. Also do a check on your current habits - how much food gets thrown out and how much gets lost in the space and is past it by the time you find it. A smaller fridge with more frequent shops might acutally be easier Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 6Mar 07, 2011 11:30 pm We are going the opposite way! We want an integrated fridge but due to space constraints cant have a seperate fridnge freezer one so have to have a one unit thing. We will also have a fridge and a freezer in the garage. I really prefer buying my meat fresh and only buy veges and fruit for a few days at a time so there is no real need for us, a family of four to have a massive fridge. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 7Mar 08, 2011 5:30 am We have an LG side by side (about 600L), which works brilliantly. However, I don't think I would have a side by side again..they are far too narrow and difficult to fit stuff in. My ideal would be to have a pigeon pair next time, funds permitting. By the way, there are only 2 of us and I complain about fitting things in the fridge Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 8Mar 08, 2011 7:25 am miss_ticky2 We have an LG side by side (about 600L), which works brilliantly. By the way, there are only 2 of us and I complain about fitting things in the fridge I agree. We had a side by side and whilst it looked great, to be honest as a fridge it is was pretty useless and I think we can store twice as much in our current 530 litres even though it is technically smaller than our side by side was. For a family of 5 I think you need 500 to 600 litres. Fridge on top and freezer below is a good way to go as your most used compartment is at easy reach. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 9Mar 10, 2011 7:50 pm Great advice. I am looking for a new fridge at the moment and the advice about side by side fridges was valuable. Re: New Fridge - what size good for family of 5? 10Mar 10, 2011 7:59 pm We are a family of 5 and got a 693l side by side. It fit in the standard size space of 1000mm width Its fabulous, on moving day we transferred all the food from our 410l fridge freezer upside down and had such a huge amount of space left. I am easily able to bulk cook again and while the fridge space is thinner it goes from top to bottom so its not an issue. My only thought was just the reorganizing to fit a cake or christmas ham will just be a juggle but I know it will all fit. I do intend to run our old fridge/freezer through summer though as drinks storage and extra Christmas season storage I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7553 Hi everyone, Newbie renovator here, after some advice for combining our family room in the picture and the alfresco and make a larger family room.
