Re: Rangehood 21Feb 27, 2011 10:50 pm Thanks AGuru. What woud you recommend for an average cook-noise not that important-just want reasonable suck-unermount not slideout or canopy??!! Thanks! Re: Rangehood 23Mar 02, 2011 7:29 am AG, I'd be interested in a recommendation for the quietest & best performing rangehood under the $1000 mark (ideally slide-out) for a 75cm cooktop. I know that there will be a bit of a compromise for both noise & performance, but we our budget just doesn't allow us to spend $$$$ on a rangehood. EDIT: interested in your thoughts (or anyone else's thoughts!) on the Smeg SA550X90 or the Bosch DHI955FAU particularly Feel free to PM me. Cheers! Re: Rangehood 24Mar 02, 2011 7:34 pm Thanks to every one who has replied. Still haven't decided which undercupboard rangehood to buy to go over my 90cm gas stove. Both Whispaire and schweigen appeal to me the most. I enjoy cooking and cook a lot of stir fry's, pasta's and the occassional BBQ steaks on my cast iron griddle plate on my stove. Can any one tell me which filters are better - Baffle or Mesh filters? What amount of extraction do I need? Which is the most quiet out of these two brands when comparing the size and extraction that I need? The unit is to be fitted in my cupboard above my stove and ducted straight out through the wall - approximately less than a meter out. Will this affect nooise level? If so how much? I cannot duct straight up into the ceiling because my cupboards don't go right up to the ceiling and you will see the ducting. I presently have a AEG 5708DM Twin motor undercupboard rangehood. It is now 12 years old, and although the motors are still working strongly, and I have never had any problems with the unit, I need to replace a few plastic parts that have broken off over the years and the cost of replacing theall the parts that I need cost over $700! I couldn't believe it, so I decided to put the money towards buying a new rangehood. After 12 years of constant use something other than the plastic components are bound to break down soon. This model is still available 75cm with a max. gross extraction- of 855m3 but it is noisy when on high speed. Not sure about noise level in db. RRP $999.00 but store are prepared to discount to $799 Most people I have contacted have recommended the Whispaire over the Schweigen mainly due to their filters which are supposed to be better. Can anyone please give me some unbiased advice? Some salepeople that I have spoken to just claim the brand that they sell is the better out of these two. In this situation they don't sell both brands. So the brand they sell is the best. I appreciate any advice. Thanks Re: Rangehood 25Mar 02, 2011 8:22 pm star-anise & claireh You have a lot to choose from it will all depend on your pricepoint & the size of your cooktop.Could you tell me these details? 53cm - Bosch, 70cm or 90cm Ilve, 70cm Euro - This is if you were to price under $1000 Special mention for the Neff 73cm Undecupboard @ $1099 (Great buy if you ever find this on special as it is a set priced item - Agency Brand) - German motors very hard to beat Undercupboards which are much cleaner & work exactly the same (Slideout part does NOT do anything) The Bosch range of slideout are very good and quieter (German Motors) - Neff & Miele are good yet over $1000 All hoods will increase in noise if NOT ducted correctly - Also will effect performance. Amazing Grace Both the Whispair & Schweigen are great choices - Yet the Baffle filters are regarded as a better performer - You get more airflow through it comparing to the Mesh - I have since found out (through Berloni Appliances in Heidelberg) that Schweigen are bringing out units with Baffle filters as well later in the year. Please read my previous post in regards to noise & extraction required. Any questions let me know Re: Rangehood 26Mar 03, 2011 12:11 pm Appliance Guru Thanks for all your expert and very helpful advice. It sounds like I can't go wrong with either a Schweigen or Whispaire rangehood However, I think I will go for the Whispaire mainly due to the baffle filters. Knowing what you know about these two brands, if you were to buy one for your home, which one would you buy and why? You didn't comment on the Sirius Brand. These also have Baffle filters. The Neff Brand is also another brand some have recommended. Any comments or advice on these two brands? Thanks again. Re: Rangehood 27Mar 03, 2011 1:01 pm Amazing Grace Both brands are fantasic as i have used both - Slightly lean towards the Whispair due to the filters & tweaked motors but not much between them The Sirius brand is new and from what i know has standard motors - Very powerful units like the units from St.George Appliances - I will try to find out some more info through a specialist i use. Neff are fantastic in everything they make - Will be very quiet yet will still have motors within the unit - German motors - Definitely a brand to look at with an internal motor. Re: Rangehood 28Mar 03, 2011 1:49 pm Appliance Guru Thanks again, your help is much appreciated. I am interested to hear about the Sirius brand. The Neff brand don't have baffle filters. I presently have a AEG twin motor Model 5708dm which is now 12 years old but still working, but the spare parts I need to replace add up to $700+ but I can replace with same brand + model for $899 so not worth buying spare parts. My husband prefers to replace with same brand and model to save money and also easy change over without the need to make any adjustments to the existing cutout. Are you familiar with this AEG model? How does it compare with the others we have mentioned. However, I am the one that uses it and has to clean it and I prefer to buy one that is more efficient and has the best extraction, not too noisy and easy to clean and has baffle filters. Whispaire ticks all the boxes. Also, my husband will be installing it to save money. As long as he installs it correctly, which I am sure he will do as he is very capable it should not affect the warranty. Look forward to hearing back from you. Re: Rangehood 29Mar 03, 2011 1:52 pm Guru appliance I forgot to ask. Is it best to get an internal unit or external unit? Other than being less noisy what are the other benefits of having an external unit? Thanks again Re: Rangehood 30Mar 03, 2011 2:04 pm If you go through my previous posts it will explain the differences in detail. But in short normal hoods with suck in & blow out through the ducting, where external motors will constantly draw all the way to the motor outside. External motors are fantastic because of the constant draw to outside - Also bascially no noise in the house. (No motor noise) Re: Rangehood 31Mar 03, 2011 2:17 pm AG, thanks! I hope to get the 71cm Electrolux induction cooktop. I am hoping to spend way less than $1000 on a rangehood! I just suck for my buck though-nose is a lesser issue! Thanks! Re: Rangehood 33Mar 04, 2011 3:11 pm appliance guru Yet the Baffle filters are regarded as a better performer - You get more airflow through it comparing to the Mesh - I have since found out (through Berloni Appliances in Heidelberg) that Schweigen are bringing out units with Baffle filters as well later in the year. I thought I'd add some more info to this. I just got off the phone with Schweigen that they will only be releasing baffle filters in the Outdoor range (for BBQs) at this stage. They have release an under-mount hood with the baffles as a limited release(there are only 100 per state and not all dealers can get them) The baffle filters are not retro fit-able to other units as the sizes are different and they do not plan on releasing baffle filters to the classic or Xpel range of hoods at this time. Also, on the Expel range, I was told that the Xpel's have aluminium filters and are not dishwasher safe. The website shows differently at this time but they said they will fix it ASAP. Again Xpel series have aluminium filters and are not dishwasher safe. Re: Rangehood 34Mar 04, 2011 3:25 pm chrisandkate Schweigen will not tell you this as they havent got a confirmed date or confirmed models yet. They will be bringing out a new range with Baffle filters throughout 2011 - This is inside information Baffle filters on the Schweigen BBQ range are already available - Xpel is a DE-Featured range and doesnt have the same options in models or motor powers (Wouldnt recommend) Re: Rangehood 35Mar 06, 2011 12:13 pm chrisandkate appliance guru Yet the Baffle filters are regarded as a better performer - You get more airflow through it comparing to the Mesh - I have since found out (through Berloni Appliances in Heidelberg) that Schweigen are bringing out units with Baffle filters as well later in the year. I spoke to Berloni appliance and they also claim that most brands are changing over to baffle filters because they perform better. Re: Rangehood 36Mar 06, 2011 12:31 pm chrisandkate I contacted a few retailers and they all confirmed that Schweigan will be changing their mesh filters to Baffle filters later in 2011. Also, with the exception of the stores that didn't sell Whispaire, the others all agreed that Baffle filters provided better extraction. Re: Rangehood 37Mar 07, 2011 11:08 am I was just sharing what the manufacturer told me. I've been told lots of different things by retailers that never pan out the way the said. I figure straight from the horses mouth is best. Re: Rangehood 38Mar 08, 2011 6:11 pm Dear All, I have a Schweigan and it is impressively effective and quiet. As everyone as mentioned before that's because the motor is outside. The downside of this is that it is noisy outside. I have really bad neighbours who complain about EVERYTHING, and I cook in fear that they will complain about the noise. I do really like it, but you really need to consider the proximity of the motor to your neighbours. It's actually quite loud when I have my windows opened. I have made that comment to the technician, and he shrugged his shoulders and said that that's to make it quiet inside. He also said that he has received complaints about the noise from inner city dwellings. Re: Rangehood 40Mar 10, 2011 8:18 pm short_stuff I have heard the Schweigen + Whispair in operation when installed and they are definitely not noisy outside - I also have one and they have minimal noise - Please double check it is not blowing against anything or blocked by anything otherwise call the supplier to get them to check it out. Should be half to a 1/4 the noise of a split system air con. CC101 It is an entry level hood made in china - hasnt got the best feedback - Would maybe look at your options in this pricepoint in other brands if you want too. |
