Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Jan 09, 2011 7:35 pm Hi Our builder provides an Omega built in 90cm Oven. Due to the large size of our kitchen, we have decided to upgrade to a Freestanding 90cm Cooker. We looked at the Omega and thought it looked a bit cheap and nasty so have decided that we might upgrade to the SMEG Freestanding unit. It now comes in Black, White and Stainless Steel, and the black was very appealing and different After going to Harvey Norman today and talking to the sales rep, I am now in two minds about the SMEG. I thought that the SMEG brand was a good quality brand, but the salesman said it would be he last choice as he has not heard very good reviews about the product, and it also seems hard to clean. I have found it difficult to find any product ratings on the internet, and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I just love the look of the Freestanding unit, but I would hate to be dissapointed as I love to bake Some people have said that they don't heat evenly??? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 2Jan 09, 2011 7:41 pm I have it and love it. Don't believe all the sales people say, there may be a bigger kick back on a certain brand so that's why they recommend them. I know someone who used to work at the good guys and even though a particular brand was crap, he sold and recommended heaps because they had a bigger spiv. Bit sad really. Anyway, omega is just smeg but rebranded omega. Same thing without the price. Ultimately the smeg is the top of the range. The omega is if you can't afford to pay it. We love ours, it's brilliant. Hope this helps. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 3Jan 09, 2011 8:19 pm Mum has a Smeg and she loves it. It cooks so quick! Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 4Jan 10, 2011 8:12 am Hi Guys I actually have an Omega 90cm free standing oven and range-hood and have found it to be brilliant - it is definitely not the fanciest oven on the market but it cooks very evenly, very quickly, and was a good value buy at the time. The heavy trivets on the burners gives me peace of mind when I use my heaviest bessemer pans. I have also found that it is easy to clean (i have it in brushed chrome). The only downside is that it doesn't have a timer. Easily remedied but still you would expect that most ovens these days would have a timer on them! I think the Smeg ovens are beautiful too - don't be put off by the salesman - as someone else has mentioned they are more than likely getting a kick back their supplier. In our next home I would probably go the Smeg or Ilve in my kitchen with and Omega in the scullery. But don't be put off by the Omega - it's definitely not so cheap and nasty. Trust me, there are heaps of other brands on the market that are much worse! Happy buying Logic will get you from A to B. I think that I will go with the Black Smeg Oven. It will fit the look of my kitchen well. After doing more research, it seemed there may have been a problem in the older model of this oven 4-5 years ago. Hopefully this has been rectified. Thanks again. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 6Jan 10, 2011 5:01 pm I also quite like the Smeg in black. I'm in 2 minds about the Smeg and the Ascot/Schweigen 90cm. I like the black.... but would it date? harder to clean? I dont know? I am hoping it will give my kitchen a more modern look. I am using white stone benches on white high gloss cupboards, in a galley style kitchen with a Mirrored Splashback. My double fridge is also white, so I think the black will be a real feature..Plus, I am a little over stainless steel. Hopefully it wont be any harder to clean that the stainless steel with Fingerprint marks. Good luck with your decision. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 8Jan 11, 2011 8:02 am Black will show every little fingermark. Harder than white or stainless to keep looking clean.
Re. Smeg...look at Whirlpool Kitchen forum, there is lots of discussion on Smeg. Basic theme is it was OK stuff 10 years ago but is cheap and nasty now. Lots of complaints about oven hotspots and poor workmanship. Personally I would not buy Smeg in a fit, especially when you can get great German brands for the same or not much more. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 9Jan 11, 2011 10:40 am Consider the GLEM range as well. We have gone for a GLEM 90cm freestanding cooker from Prestige Appliances. It was in our budget, and the burner specs and layout are to our needs as is the 90cm oven with 116ltr capacity. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 10Jan 11, 2011 12:02 pm Having personally seen and touched both the black and stainless steel Smeg oven side by side, can i confirm the black is more resistant to finger prints then the stainless steel. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 11Jan 11, 2011 1:03 pm I had a black wall oven in my first house,In this house I put in ss.Black I found harder to get smear marks off ss for me. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 12Jan 15, 2011 6:27 pm I think I am going to get the black... I have to. My kitchen tap is this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and after reading lots about the smeg etc... I am going with gut feeling of Schweigen- although there is not enough written about them. It's internal width is a amazing. I could never go back to a small oven. I want to be able to cook a chook and 2 trays of vegies... and come garlic bread... and dessert ALL AT ONCE Goodluck. I can't complain really, but we don't use it a huge amount because we also have a 60cm blanco wall oven. In hindsight I wish I just got a 90cm wall oven. I like that it is out of the kids reach, less of a hazard when it is open, but I love the size of the 90cm. Although the freestanding oven is not hot to touch when cooking.... I should mention that the clock on the freestanding cooker failed soon after we bought it. Under warranty they fixed that for free, but a bit of a worry that it buggered up within 6mths! I'd not considered this before but always look inside first now. We chose an Ilve for that house and it was FANTASTIC!! I would definitely buy an Ilve again. Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 16Feb 22, 2011 5:27 pm My mum has an Ilve and really doesn't like it.. has had it for 10 years now. I'm going for the Ascot 90cm, black. Nonna's Nest House set for completion November 2013 Re: Freestanding 90cm Oven - Any suggestions ..Smeg ?? 17Feb 22, 2011 6:24 pm I've just bought a 90cm Smeg freestanding stove and a 60cm wall oven since I wanted to be able to grill and bake separately at the same time. The wall oven was dead on arrival. The fan and light worked but the knob to turn on the oven function was faulty and the backing plate for the knobs was missing some screws as was loose. Rather than wait the week they gave me for the service call, I asked for (read demanded) a new oven be delivered the next day, and it was. When we opened the freestanding stove's oven, I noticed that the element hanging down. It seems they forgot to screw the element to the ceiling of the oven with the brackets attached to the element. If there is anything wrong with the oven when we get the chance to operate it, it too will be going back to where it came from. The gas cooktop works a treat as does the wall oven. If my experience of the last week is anything to go by, I'd be looking at an Ilve or equivalent. I am hoping that this is the last of my kitchen bad luck. Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
