Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Aug 07, 2010 11:20 pm Would be very interested to know what brands people do and don't recommend for ovens, cooktops and cookers. I completely broke mine tonight (by snapping part of the door and having the glass fall out!!!), and am trying desperately to research as fast as i can so i can go out and buy a new one. I want it to be one for the long haul. Not sure on budget as yet, but always like to get good value for money! Thanks in advance! Nic Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 2Aug 07, 2010 11:41 pm All my appliances are MIELE. I have bought the oven (60cm), stream oven, cooktop, coffee maker, dishwasher, front loader and dryer. These appliances are there for (me) the next 20 years, so I have invested wisely. Nic There are many brands out there even those rebagged by well know brands as their own but cheaper just visit some of the larger Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Clive Peters and so on, take pen and paper even a camera and make comparisons make sure you know what you looking for and features you may want to have in a previous post I think you mention baking a steam oven would be ideal. Miele is good but you may end up breaking the budget so my advice is if you go for such brand look for packaged deals may work cheaper for you. Finally you will never regret buying the German brands for kitchen appliances - Bosch, Neff, Miele, Siemens. They are beautifully engineered, add value and have great after sales support if needed. have a lok at Neff's appliance packages http://www.prestigeappliances.com.au/ That's my two cent contribution Oops! One thing I forgot spend sometime browsing through http://www.productreview.com.au/ Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 4Aug 08, 2010 11:28 am I have read Jamie Oliver (I think... it was some celeb chef) saying that he prefers American ovens because they're built to withstand slamming doors and being handled roughly, whereas the European ovens aren't as hardy. I always meant to look in to this further but never got around to it. Does anyone have any recs for American ovens? Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 5Aug 08, 2010 4:27 pm I had all Bosch appliances in my last house and loved them. I am currently in a rental and have Technika and HATE them. Everything burns in the oven, it takes forever to boil a pot of water on the cooktop, and the dishwasher is SOOO noisy. All of the salespeople I have spoken to at Good Guys, Clive Peeters etc say that Technika is crap and so many come back to the shop for returns or warranty repairs. Ditto Blanco. I also know a couple of people who are not happy after going with Smeg. Sounds like all bad news, i know. Strangely enough, I have always had good performance from Westinghouse & Chef. Don't know whether they're still made here or not. I have a 40 year old (yeah, i know!) Westinghouse double oven that still cooks great. It must be a collectors item by now. I've also put these into a couple of rental houses & never had a problem (mind you, that's only over 5 years). Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 7Aug 08, 2010 8:39 pm If you have the budget, stick with the Germans - Miele, Neff, Siemens. We went with Siemens because it has all the features of Miele but about 10% less cost. Neff look beautiful but have no experience with them. Any of these three will be a good product. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 8Aug 08, 2010 8:41 pm when I was buying a new dishwasher Miele and Bosch were always at the top of the list for customer reviews and sales staff. I don't know anyone who is unhappy with their Bosch, no matter what it is. I have a Bosch dishwasher and it's fantastic. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 9Aug 09, 2010 1:24 am xquisite Strangely enough, I have always had good performance from Westinghouse & Chef. Chef came up trumps in Choice's budget oven and cooktop review a few years back. Miele topped the exxy models IIRC. Those results were more about results rather than reliability though (miele invariably tops those surveys, however I find them too small). Neff, Bosch and Siemens are all made by Bosch-Siemens Group, so you'll find these three brands have very similar quality. Bosch seems to be more affordable among the 3 brands while Neff and Siemens are more like 'designer' versions of Bosch with fancier features. Neff is huge is the UK. Didn't know Neff were part of the same group. Bosch is the mid range brand, Siemens the top range. I guess Neff would be top range too judging by price. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 13Aug 09, 2010 10:40 pm We bought the blanco Pyrolitic oven. The oven itself is great but the pyro function was a real let down. It did clean the walls of the oven ok and the dust could be wiped out, but the glass door was still dirty and the shelves and racks need to be taken out and hand scrubbed. Overall, the extra cost for the pyro was not worth it. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 14Aug 09, 2010 11:43 pm I was going to put in the latest Westinghouse 1.5 oven in my new house but have found out that the oven door has shattered often enough to be considered common when you read reviews. I have just bought Euro brand. Not yet installed but my local gas shop where I bought them have never had a return in 2-3 yeas that they have been selling them. They would not sell me the Westinghouse because of the door issue. I have a Bosch washing machine that has been fantastic, and after reading lots of reviews and recommendations of cookers etc, they seem like a great brand. I think i will keep them in front of my mind when looking. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 16Aug 12, 2010 5:18 am We've got a Bosch oven...love it and would buy it again Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 17Aug 13, 2010 1:55 pm Well, after having my heart set on a Bosch, i had a look in "real life" today, and it's really small inside. 81L vs 121L for some of the others i saw is a really huge difference. It will be the difference in fitting 2 trays next to one another and not. Such a shame There's been no mention of Smeg so far. How does everyone rate it? I quite liked the look of one that i saw. Re: Oven/cooktop/cooker recommendations (+ non-recommendatio 18Aug 14, 2010 12:18 am We chose a highland cooktop, it is fantastic, really high gas output, and is glass rather than Stainless and really easy to clean (DH is a chef and not keen on induction despite my efforts). Our oven is EuroMaid... we don't use the oven that much, and this was a 12 function pyrolitic half price, and so far we are really happy with it. It is easy to use and has a digital display. Much better than our old simpson. Bosch DW is fantastic, so quiet. We chose to spend more on the kitchen and benchtop, because you use that all the time, where as the oven may only be used 3 nights a week or less in summer when we have lots of BBQ and salads. I found that the oven didn't bake evenly, so I could only bake one tray of biscuits/cupcakes at a time, and the internal space was a bit small. Having said that, I now have a westinghouse in the place we are renting while we build, which makes my smeg look like a superstar! They have also improved a lot in capacity and it is invaluable to talk to a smeg person (not just the sales person) to find out the best way to use the oven (learnt this a bit too late!). In short, I have gone from saying "never again" to "maybe..." I like the look of the linear, it has a big internal capacity and is advertised as an even cooker. My builder actually uses omega/smeg. Thinking about omega cooktop and smeg for the oven. Have always had a thing about matching knobs, but my oven and cooktop won't be together, so I will let this go... Also have heard only good things about electrolux and the ariston open space. They are high on my list as well. Too many choices!! Hope this helps... A Smeg is fine until you compare it to something better. Go to a showroom and "feel" a Smeg. Then wander over and "feel" a Miele. You will notice the difference immediately. The Smeg feels lighter and tinnier, the control knobs are not as tight, the finish not as perfect. See the extendable racks of the Miele, the heavy door glazing, the seamless engineering. In the end, you do generally get what you pay for. Smeg's are probably a perfectly good oven...until you look at something better. My daughter and son in law are about to start building, they are having a 600mm induction cook top and 900mm oven.
