Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Oct 22, 2007 9:34 pm We are looking to get a Wall-mounted rangehood. We like the ones that have a glass canopy but unsure how practical it really is.
Is it easier to clean? Other issues? Anyone have one, love it? Brands and types would be appreciated. If your unsure of what type I mean, here are the two, 1 as a stainless steel and the other glass. A lot of this will collect on the underside, which is not an area that people tend to clean everytime they cook - most stainless canopies have mesh filters completely covering the underside of the hood that do not need daily cleaning. Glass will also show more grime than steel tends to - you can wipe over a steel canopy and it will look clean even if it is a bit smeared, but this is not as attractive on a glass hood. Cheers, Earl Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 7Oct 23, 2007 1:21 pm Effective surface area for uptake of cooking fumes will be more in a canopy. In a glass they have filters only in the centre with glass'wings' on the side that collect grease.
If you cook a lot from scratch then go for the canopy otherwise the glass is ok. Just my 2 cents Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 8Oct 23, 2007 10:17 pm I completely agree with Earl and Vpande, glass will show every streak from grease.
Although we prefer the look of the glass, we still chose the stainless steel (as an upgrade though). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 9Oct 23, 2007 10:43 pm darn it! I love the look of glass canopy rangehood and we get it as a free upgrade with one of the builders we are looking at - hopefully there is someone out there with something positive to say about the glass finish - I love it....

Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 12Oct 24, 2007 8:30 am don't have a glass rangehood but have a glass splashback.
looks ace when it's clean ... but it really is a daily effort to keep it looking great. even when I think it's clean I'll be sitting in the family room and look into the kitchen and see another streak or smudge ... grrrrrr but i say if you are willing to just spend a few extra minutes a day wiping it down (and I think it comes down to having a good glass cleaner) then go for it ... looks excellent!!! Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 13Oct 24, 2007 9:28 am mattwalker I'm with, Matt. Glass is good! It's just about personal preference and how picky you are with things being clean. And I like things clean ALL the time! But if I was trying to avoid cleaning or wiping something down everyday (or every other day) then I wouldn't have glass mirrors in my bathrooms, showers or kitchen splashbacks. Or windows. Our motto back in the day (in my early teens when I used to work for the Colonel - KFC that is) was: Clean as you go. Definitely makes life a lot easier. But that's just my one cent worth. Can't afford two cents anymore. Hehe [sneakersss] Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 14Oct 24, 2007 1:56 pm Hmm... i thought 'clean as you go' was a maccas thing
i totally agree with that saying. we have a glass canopy because that was the free upgrade, and a glass splashback. Another thing i learnt from maccas is how to clean glass REALLY WELL! You can imagine how greasy things get at a Maccas store! So, you need to mix degreaser with window cleaner. I spray the degreaser on, then spray on the window cleaner and wipe off straight away (before it dries). You can buy degreaser from most supermarkets and can get vats of it at bunnings. Its the best stuff! (not too cheap though...) THEY HAVE FINISHED THE HOUSE AFTER NINE LONG MONTHS... BUT! The carpet is the wrong colour... Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 15Oct 25, 2007 12:08 am Lovely stuff - degreaser in the kitchen -
I'd be going stainless - the previous threads prove the point - think about youcars windscreen versus the paintwork on a wet winters day with road grime etc. Kitchens are similar environments - grease and muck being flung around in the air. So smoth surfaces are nice - but ones that really show up the dirt - hmm not for me. Steve Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 16Oct 25, 2007 7:55 am I've had both in other houses and I say glass is definately the way to go. I found the stainless 10 times harder to keep clean, not to mention costly for a proper stainless steel cleaner. After a couple of years our stainless rangehodd looked all spotty and it wasn't a cheap one. I actually love the look of the stainless but if you are looking at what will look better in 5 years time I say definately go the glass. Re: Rangehoods - Wall-Mounted Canopy - Is Glass Good ? 17Oct 25, 2007 8:37 am I have a stainless steel rangehood at home.
The best way to clean it & remove grease is a spray of diluted cloudy ammonia (4 parts water, 1 part cloudy ammonia). You can buy it from the supermarket for about $3. If the grease is really stuck on - like on the fan - I hadn't cleaned it for 5 years - I put on gloves, sloshed some cloudy ammonia on a damp cloth and it wiped straight off. Better than any other stainless steel cleaner I've ever used. Hello everyone, I have a question regarding moving a chandelier after it has been mounted.
