Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 May 12, 2010 11:32 pm Hi, Just in the middle of planning my kitchen renovation and we quite confined of space of where to place appliances. So much to fit into such a little space. Anyway one of our options is to place the microwave about the wall oven which is going to a 1 1/2 ovens. Do anyone else have this combination and does it work well? My concern is that the microwave is going to be too high for me to get stuff out of or that the oven might sit too low to the ground. I have a 10 month baby and others planned for the future. At the moment we have an old upright and DS has already had one burn from the oven being within his reach hence my concern with how low it will sit Cheers Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 2May 13, 2010 6:57 am I wouldn't want the bottom of the microwave being higher than 1500mm from the floor. Any higher and it becomes not only awkward to use but dangerous as well. Cheers, Earl Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 3May 13, 2010 9:01 am Have a look at my kitchen design guidelines. 1250mm off the floor (maximum) would be a safe height. Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 4May 16, 2010 12:34 am We are renovating our kitchen and had the microwave above the oven, and kept that configuration.. We just have a single oven. It is at about shoulder height, and I don't think it is dangerous, but we don't use it a great deal, mainly reheating small meals for our son.. In our new kitchen it is hidden away behind a cupboard mainly because I didn't want a large gap above it, but we couldn't move the oven up heigher and keep the drawers at the same level as the others in the kitchen - I wanted all the lines to match up perfectly. Like you, we had little choice due to space constraints, but it worked fine with some planning. The choice of oven is important - if it's one of those with the separate griller on the bottom, forget it, you'll have to kneel down to use it. I found a really good Whirlpool oven with griller on top that could be set quite low, which allowed us to place the microwave at a reasonable height. We had a single pot drawer beneath, and a shelf compartment for cookbooks above. The oven had a cool to the touch exterior too, which is important when you have little kids. I'll see if I can hunt out a photo later.... Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 6May 16, 2010 2:16 pm We had this in our old house and I am not particularly tall, but I could access the microwave ok. I don't see how having the oven underneath is any different to having an underbench oven, because unless an oven is above your waist height, a child will be able to touch the door. In our current house we have kiddie gates blocking off the kitchen. Yes they can be a PITA but it is the best thing we ever did because it means we don't have to worry about the kids getting into the cupboards, pantry, fridge and of course touching the oven. They are both under 3 and are the sort of kids who are into everything I would consider doing this if your kitchen design allows it, as it's only for a few years and it's easier than having to put child locks on all the cupboards too. Anyway, here is a pic of the old kitchen so you can see how it looked. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 7May 16, 2010 3:47 pm I wouldn't put it too high - risk of burning yourself, and harder to see in. For my new kitchen we put in one pot drawer, than a standard 600mm oven above that, then the microwave above that and its not too high. So the oven definitely a lot easier to get into than it was if it was an underbench one, and the m/w is not too high (personally I tend to go to and from the m/w a lot more than the oven so this is important). Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 8May 16, 2010 6:34 pm Hi We have just finished our kitchen (a few months ago now) but sorry no photos have made it on here yet. We have a 1 1/2 Bosch oven, with a microwave on top of that. The oven bottom is 44cm from the floor, the microwave bottom is 140cm from the floor. I have found them both easy to use. I was concerned at both the height of the oven - being too low, or the micro being too high. Both have been good. My 8 yr old DS has no trouble reaching the micro to heat up things. I find the oven a good height - if it was any higher, I couldn't look into the top oven. My children are older, and this was a factor in planning the layout of the kitchen. We were also looking at the micro underbench, but I am glad we put them all together. The micro also has a ss surround so it all lines up with the ss oven perfectly. In our old house we had an old upright with young children and they were always ok with that, and I did alot of cooking. I guess you have to plan for the future as well - how long do you intend on having this kitchen for - mine will be forever cause I don't want to go through it again Hope this helps. Re: Mircowave above the oven...need advice 9May 18, 2010 6:06 pm Hi Bendo, As mentioned by kek and impatient, having the 1 1/2 oven just one pot drawer up (440mm from the ground) and, in our case, a Westinghouse 1 1/2 is about 885mm high so the bottom of the microwave is at about 1360mm off the floor. I have a mocked up picture somewhere but that basically puts the bottom of the microwave at about 4 foot, 6 inches high in the old language. So if you are just 5 foot tall you will be able to see inside and it will all be at head height. That's a little high if you actually ARE 5 ft but if you're closer to 5'4" or 5'6", shouldn't be a problem. My wife is 5'4" and she's signed off on that design. SK edited to add - most good ovens now have double or even triple glass walls so they are reasonably warm but not scolding on the outside. Check the one you're thinking of to confirm it has these multiple glass walls. I am having my kitchen done with an oven below and the a combo microwave/oven above. I could otherwise see me just not using the microwave because it would be too high.
