Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Sep 03, 2009 10:03 pm Hi, my friend and I are going to build our first home. We'd like to know your opinion regarding cooking appliances since we don't know which one is good and there are so many in the market. What do you think of these brands : Technika, Omega, Baumatic, or Smeg? Thanks everyone. Waiting for 2010 Land registration.... Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 2Sep 04, 2009 8:52 am Hi aya99, As part of our research into so many cooking appliances I ended up getting very confused. You can look at my blog for the different stories as to what went on. But I can offer the following: Technika - Currently have a technika oven / stove and rangehood. Can't complain about them at all, have lasted for eight years without too much of a problem. The Rangehood globes blow about every two months and it sounds like a jet engine when its on but these are my only concerns. Omega - Never really looked into these Baumatic - Never looked into these either Smeg - Apparently they are expensive and I have read on a few web sites that they are poor quality products with good marketing and should be avoided. I don't know if this is true though. We have done a lot of browsing at E&S trading and they keep telling us that they would not stock inferior products and they have a lot of Smeg appliances (they never did recommend Smeg however). We went with delonghi as the quality seemed good plus we purchased at a delonghi warehouse sale and saved heaps. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 5Sep 04, 2009 12:09 pm Why European appliances? Choice magazine tests show that the Australian-made cooking appliances are every bit as good as the European - in general the Aussie ones are better. I'm getting Westinghouse in my new home. They are good value and rate highly, and it's keeping jobs in Australia, which means it's helping all Australians to keep their jobs. Their stainless steel finish is also noticeably more finger-print resistant than most other brands. P.S. I admit I'm getting an Omega rangehood as the specifications show they are dramatically quieter than the other brands I've found. Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 6Sep 04, 2009 12:37 pm It depends on how much you want to spend. For example I really realy realy hate it when people say hey look at me I am the best and getting meiele appliance. But then they stinge out and go for the most basic product they have that is **** in my opinion. I reckon too aussie make good appliance but they also range for different price points. I have recently bought the aussie made eline series by Electrolux. The same people that make chef westinghouse etc. I am interested to see how they performance when installed. Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 7Sep 04, 2009 12:43 pm whatever you do don't get technika. i'm currently a renting a new house that has technika appliances. the gas stove is great. U really can't go wrong with gas stoves anyway.. i love the heat and how fast it sizzles my cooking. The rangehood is exactly as how room4acubby said. The technika rangehood is super noisy and the light seems to blow off every so often... im getting **. It also doesn't help much when you're cooking..... my house always smells like burnt sausages not that i burnt sausages mind you. The oven is not so hot either. The house im building is using Omega appliances. I wouldn't say they're awesome but have heard its at least better than technika. Omega is the budget version of SMEG. So far i've only heard good things about SMEG... and have been getting mixed review of Omega. But since i'm on a budget and the Omega appliance is standard from my builder, i took the plunge. I'm just hoping my rangehood actually do suction enough in the new place. hope thath elps Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 8Sep 06, 2009 10:26 pm Wow, thank you very much everyone for your responses. The thing is, the builder that I might use is going to supply with Smeg. My freind is going to build with Metricon and they only use Baumatic. Any suggestion? Waiting for 2010 Land registration.... Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 14Sep 08, 2009 10:41 pm hi aya99 I put SMEG in my last home and are definitely doing again this time - except bigger this time. I love to cook and my last oven was brilliant. I recommend SMEG anytime, including the dishwasher (which I am also having again). Omega is like the budget range of SMEG. JL Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 15Sep 09, 2009 4:19 pm If your builder is offering you Smeg, I think that's a great quality standard range of appliances to offer.. Smeg has a good reputation. I would think twice about changing it to Omega to save money. Quite often the builder has a great rate on their inclusive items, and when you start changing them, you don't get much money back ... you probably wouldnt save much money changing from Smeg to Omega through the builder. Also, just a consideration .. if you don't go with the builder's appliances and choose your own, you may find that you have to take out separate insurance to cover these when they are ready for installation. Good luck. Re: Cooking appliances-which brand is good? 16Sep 11, 2009 10:44 pm Thanks, jaelee. I think you're right. They're doing a sell-off of all the Kleenmaid stuff too (as they went bust). . . we got a double sink (with draining rack and chopping board) for $150 and three kitchen taps for $80 each. .. bargain! You have to remember that sometimes GST's not included and there's always a sellers fee on top(normally 10 or 15%). I'm so excited, I'm telling EVERYBODY!!!
