Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances Re: Rangehood placement question 3Aug 30, 2009 10:19 am I'm interested to know too. Most rangehoods that I've seen installed, sit just above the upper cupboard base line, very few have sat exactly in line with it. If you have a glass splash back this invariably means a painted gap between the splash back and the rangehood (unless you've got splash back in between the cupboards up the wall). Much neater if it's all in line. I believe that the specifications for your rangehood should indicate the required distance for it to be located above the cooker. Not sure if there is an Australian Standard or Building Code that applies though. Anyone know? Re: Rangehood placement question 4Aug 30, 2009 12:37 pm I think the standard height is 600 but if your having gas its gotta be 650. I dont think there is any set rule its just advisable to have it a bit higher for gas due to the heat produced, mainly to protect your cupboards. I used to live in a small unit in syd and the range was very low and poor hubby nearly took his head off everytime he cooked. That was a gas cooktop as well. U dont want it too low or too high as the range will not be as effective. You can always find out what height your cooktop specifies and have your cupboards made to start at that same height. I definately wanted it to be inline so it looked more finished and will make it easier/cheaper for the glass splashback. Re: Rangehood placement question 6Aug 30, 2009 2:22 pm I really doubt there are any specified standards or the kitchen guys would have told us all, lest they have to fix it afterward. From the quotes i got and my display home visiting, i noticed that most were about 600 but some were higher and some lower. In the end it just depends on what you personally like, and for me we had ours higher as i want to encourage my lovely husband to cook. Cant wait till the kitchen is in! Re: Rangehood placement question 7Aug 30, 2009 3:01 pm We have just installed our Westinghouse rangehood. The instructions/warranty booklet stated the height required with a minimum and maximum depending on the cooktop (gas or electric). For our gas cooktop it is recommended the height be between 700 and 800 mm. If the height isn't adhered to the warranty is null and void. Our splashback is being custom made and will reach the bottom of the rangehood so there isn't the gap commonly seen. Re: Rangehood placement question 8Aug 30, 2009 3:25 pm as virginia mentioned check the installation guide. My omega rangehood install guide says mine must be 650 minimum from the cooktop surface but it should be in the book that came with your rangehood (in my book it wasnt easy to find but it is in there) Re: Rangehood placement question 10Aug 30, 2009 11:30 pm Our builder kitchen people advised that there's a warranty requirement but also a building code requirement to have the rangehood a minimum of 700mm from a gas stove if this is gas. So we either raised the cupboards to be at 700mm high or we had the rangehood higher and do a couple of cuts in the glass so it went all the way up to the rangehood. After much deliberating and going back and forth on our decisions (I really wanted it all in line) we decided to leave the cupboards at 600mm and the rangehood at the required 700mm. This was due to the fact that I am a shorty and really didn't want to spend the next few years having to really reach up to grab anything from the cuboards, so I guess in this case comfort won over looks.
