I would have loved to have another wall oven but they don't come big enough so I had to go with the freestanding oven. Good-Luck with your decision and your upcoming build. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 3Jul 16, 2009 7:44 pm I could not stand having to bend down to access an underbench oven. I love wall ovens and for the past 28 years I have had a double wall oven which I adored. Unfortunately quality double wall ovens are rare now and the next best thing is a row of wall ovens such as the Miele or Neff range. Perhaps my 'advanced' age and lack of dexterity sways me this way.
Also, cooking in our house is a joint affair between my OH and I so a wall oven set apart from the cooktop is less dangerous as we are not in each others space when serving up. I'm certainly not doing anything which persuades the OH he is in the way and so doesn't have to help.. Do you have small children...they probably will only touch it once I have gone to an underbench oven, I don't "bake" a lot...and I am older but it's not bothering me at all, and I hate bending and stretching Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 7Jul 16, 2009 11:35 pm We have a double oven - wall oven, so we get the extra space/capacity that a 900mm underbench oven provides but the convenience (bending/stretching/checking what's cooking etc) that a wall oven gives. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 8Jul 17, 2009 6:26 am I'm going underbench because I don't want a tower with a wall oven. Its not part of my kitchen design. I've lived with both and it doesn't bother me. Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! Soon to go to council. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 9Jul 17, 2009 9:11 am I'm not going to lose sleep either way but currently have an under bench that I would LOVE to change to a wall oven. I prefer not to crouch on the floor to see what's going on. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 10Jul 17, 2009 10:41 am Thank you all for the advice.. I don't bake a lot at this stage, but I hope to when my house is finished and some kids come along.. I forget to consider "little fingers" and the like when planning so thanks for the reminder! Aesthetically, I have to work out a way for it to work in the kitchen which is a galley kitchen in a very open plan living area, but I am fair way off that stage so I will just spend a bit more time researching.. Any suggestions welcome mind you! Thanks again! ps I am so glad I found this forum and I really enjoy reading about everyones experiences, though I am not quite sure if I am working it all correctly! Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 11Jul 17, 2009 2:07 pm Wall oven for me, i am in the process of renovating my kitchne and the main consideration for me was a wall oven. i have had to put up with a gas oven cooker for the last few years and absolutly hate it. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 12Jul 17, 2009 2:21 pm Wall oven for me. I have back problems and i can't imagine lifting a heavy roaster out of a low oven. I've had wall ovens for 25yrs and not going to change with next house. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. I think we've only had on in one place we rented. The house we built has a wall oven, and I look forward to using it. I don't quite understand why people go for double ovens though, if you do that much baking wouldn't it be a better idea to just get two ovens? At least then you can have them at different temperatures and say cook a roast in one while baking dessert in the other? Pretty sure I saw something like that in a newspaper and magazine (in a home) and thought it was a much better idea! So there you go, you could have one of each, an oven down low and one up high, bet the high one gets most use though! Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 15Jul 17, 2009 5:58 pm Wall oven, definately. I think its great that you don't have to bend over in order to check on your oven dish. You can just take a look at it while you are on your way to something else. Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 16Jul 17, 2009 6:11 pm You know what Pebble. . . I'd like to do exactly that, get two 60cm ovens and put one above the other. We're building a pretty big house and have been told that buyers expect one of the new huge 90cm ovens, but I just don't see the point in heating one up just to cook a meat pie. . . then there's the 1.5 oven, which costs a fortune. I mainly want more oven space just for things like chrissy dinner and dinner parties, but for the majority of the time, one would be just fine. If we get two 60cm ovens, I'll just pull them out every six months or so and switch their positions, they all seem to be plug-in anyway nowadays, so you can do it yourself! Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 17Jul 17, 2009 7:10 pm WALL OVEN all the way. Henley homes come standard with a 1 and 1/2 oven btw which is pretty cool. So if you're just baking a cake, you can quickly and efficiently heat up the half oven. It's also good for cooking two things at different temps. My friends all swear by their gigantor underbenchies saying things like, "I'll need it for xmas." All I have to say to them is- pffff, my grandma made xmas dinners for 12 people for over fifty years using a teeny tiny wood fired oven. Size doesn't matter I don't care what y'all say Re: Wall oven or Underbench oven? 18Jul 17, 2009 8:49 pm I'm about to give the OK to go on my new kitchen and had to make the same decision. I have both a 60cm oven AND a 60cm convection microwave that matches the oven and they are currently stacked. However, the microwave door opens downward in the same way as the oven, and with the height of it, (door is at head height), it's impossible to clean. I have decided to treat the two of them like full blown ovens and have I'm going to have both at bench height in cabinets next to each other. The cabinet maker tried everything to talk me out of it, trying to get me to stack like they are now, or to move the oven under the hob. However, I'm the bunny that will have to clean them and I don't like the idea of twisting on my knees to get to the back of an underbench oven! In addition, my 70 year old mother whose back is dicky uses my kitchen and I don't want her to do her back in lifting a roast into or out of the oven. I spoke to a colleague who has had both a wall oven and an underbench and she wouldn't consider the underbench anymore. Go the wall and don't let your microwave be mounted too high! I may be wrong about modern double ovens but the old one I have is fantastic (or I should say WAS - before the bottom oven died ). You could cook a roast plus vegetable in one while the other cooked a cake or warmed up the plates. We searched in vain for a double oven with a similar capacity but found nothing we liked. Call me old and crotchety, but i think it is a ploy to get consumers to pay more by splitting them into individual ovens. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
