Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Sep 10, 2008 2:06 am Picking up from Joles comment in another thread about being a bit tired of feature walls does anyone have any alternatives (apart from wallpaper or decals).
I've been thinking of doing two walls as opposed to one and maybe having them in a complementary, the same or contrasting colours. Plus I think my DH would be happy to have me out of his (and the trades) hair for a few days . Happy people all around . Our bedroom wall extends past the wir to the ensuite (basically one big room) and I'm thinking of picking up a colour from the feathers in the pic and taking it through from the bedroom wall, past the wir, to the bathroom. Looking for colours that would complement grey ... perhaps platinum on one wall but not sure about the other?? Definitely not fire engine red ... there's enough angst in the air atm . Our sheers are a dark grey with a fine stripe in them and carpet is also greyish. Apart from that we have little other colour in the room. Walls are 1/4 strength Hog Bristle. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bedside tables are a very dark brown as is the wir. Cheers everyone Re: Adding colour - walls?? 2Sep 10, 2008 10:34 am I know I mentioned this a few times but its really easy and it helps get great ideas for what you like colour wise.
Grab a few different sized blank canvases from a craft shop(not overly expensive) and paint them whatever colour you are thinking of doing feature walls. You could also hang random sizes in complimenatry colours. You could add fabric to them possibly with the same stripe you are talking about in your sheers. I have actually done canvas art for work purposes and we used old table runners running from top to bottom wrapping over the cnavas for texture and then and added the sticks ( in your case the feathers) to the runner with wire and that way the colours and look all tied together. I know this all sounds too fiddly possibly but even if you keep it simple and paint some canvas in 1 flat colour and then a decal over that. Endless possibilities that are not permanent. Another option is large cheap photo frames from ikea and paint lots of pices of card and hang them on your walls even mix in some images that you like.....ie agaves, or pebbles Sorry if this is to much babble.......... Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Adding colour - walls?? 4Sep 26, 2008 6:27 pm Hi Mish and PK
Sorry I missed your responses but have been off line. I've purchased quite a few sample pots (another 50 bucks ) and painted some large cardboard samples. Nothing quite grabs me (well colour wise anyway ) Mish here is a pic of my favourite doona. This wall needs repainting anyway as you can probably see. Curtains are blockout + dark grey pinstripe sheers and pelmet is a Warwick fabric which is black, silver and grey. Dramatic but needs some colour I think. Table lamps are black, lamp base is nickel and tables very dark brown almost black. We saw a decorator recently who said that the 'in' thing to do was paint feature walls a fairly muted or neutral colour and use cushions and decorator items to add colour. But I'm bored with neutral and think the room needs some zing. I've got lots of furniture and stuff and keep moving things around to see where they look best - as the room is big (5.5 x 4) do you think it can wear a bold colour ????? BTW The feathers had to leave the bathroom as they were streaking my white walls with red so they've migrated to another room . Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sorry the room doesn't look its best but I'm not in a tidying frame of mind . I'll add some more pics of the furniture in the room over the next few hours (dial up ). Re: Adding colour - walls?? 5Sep 26, 2008 9:58 pm Re: Adding colour - walls?? 6Sep 26, 2008 11:13 pm Hi Dy
So the sheers you have in front of the blockout operating on a different track?. Do you have a blind as well ?or just use the sheers by themselves for privacy during the day and the blockout is kept open. I was going to have sheers and a blockout blind combination but very interested to see your set up. I love curtains, espacially when they are really full and drape from the ceiling to the floor. cant wait to see all your curtains when they are installed. Was silent gliss tracking very expensive or reasonably priced? Was silent gliss tracking very expensive or reasonably priced? Mrs B Hi Mrs B The sheers operate on a different track and we've left them as one continuous sheer (not split in the middle). During the day we pull the blockout back and the sheers will remain for privacy. I think it is a modern take on curtains. We don't have any blinds on the front rooms just blockout/sheers on what they call a double track and pelmets. Silent Gliss aren't too expensive at all. We're having blinds on the open plan family/kitchen/dining windows - they are a textured grey semi transparent fabric from Designer Blinds. Very nice range and worth a look if you like that type of thing. They curtain guy also showed us some blinds that are fairly new that have a silver backing - we will be putting these on our western long narrow windows to reduce heat transfer. Also worth a look if you are concerned about heat transfer. Basically all our bedrooms and rooms on the front elevation have curtains and sheers and all the western long narrow windows and rear rooms have blinds. I know its a mish mash but my mum has just done something similar and it looks terrific. Not disjointed at all. Cheers Re: Adding colour - walls?? 8Sep 27, 2008 10:14 am Hi Dy, Mich will be able to describe the colours better and may have a different take on it. But I really like the purple you have there, if thats how its coming across on screen.
As an example I have seen these 2 purple colours on large walls and they look pretty striking. I think they go really well with silver also. This first one would be what I would call a more muted purple. So not as pronounced but still effective against white, black and silver. It is dulux Ritual Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and this second one is dulux Ritual Experience. Alot deeper in colour and will probably be more striking. I think it would bring out the colour in your flowers on your quilt. http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/gweluphome/untitled.jpg Again this is something I have seen and liked but Michelle will be able to better tell you about the colours and suggest others. Your room is looking lovely by the way and the curtains are very opulant. I like them alot. Re: Adding colour - walls?? 9Sep 27, 2008 2:45 pm Thanks PK
You've picked two very similar colours that I used on the samples (except they are Porters). They are the same ones I liked the best. We must share the same taste . Cheers Re: Adding colour - walls?? 10Sep 27, 2008 4:27 pm DeeElle We must share the same taste . From the pics of your beautiful house, I am pretty sure we do:D Re: Adding colour - walls?? 11Sep 27, 2008 4:47 pm I really hate to say…..but I think the silver will look fantastic!!
(The darkest one.) Other than I just need to ask Dy, in case I’m missing something. Why have you chosen blues and purply colours? I don’t see anything in your room to match those colours? Great room by the way…LOVE the curtains. Maybe DDs room.
Purple is in the quilt cover .. sort of an aubergine colour. I like the silver as well and I think you're right. It will look good. Are you suggesting the middle silver colour ... the one on the far left is a bit more like pewter but reflects some gold. thanks again for your help Re: Adding colour - walls?? 13Sep 27, 2008 9:22 pm The silver on the right….it looks deeper.
But it might be the lighting.
