Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 28, 2008 3:28 pm I've decided to start painting to freshed up my old and tired house.
I've decided on Dulux Hog Bristle quarter for the walls and Dulux Hog Bristle for the skirting boards etc. Now I was going to go with a light kitchen using Caesarston Ice Snow for the benchtops but I was unsure of the cabinets - maybe Laminex Espresso... But eventually I want to have an open plan kitchen/lounge as there is a half-wall seperating them at the moment. I am doing a feature wall in the lounge room and have decided on a red colour as I loved the red wall I had in the spare bedroom in my old house. I'm thinking either Dulux Red Miranda or Dulux Red Box. Any suggestions on which would go best with my Hog Bristle quarter? I am open to using other brands if someone can suggest something else. The furniture in the room is 2 x white leather couches and a dark brown TV cabinet. My idea is to have something that looks simple, modern and classic at the same time Trying to make it mine! Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 2Aug 29, 2008 9:57 am Can't really help with specific colours, but in theory I think it all sounds really good. I think keeping the kitchen neutral is a good idea if you eventually want to make it open plan - that way you can change the lounge feature wall whenever you tire of it. I love hogs bristle its a really nice flow colour. Good luck! But if I had to pick one I would say the Miranda. I have been having 2nd thoughts over the weekend and was umming and uhhing and went to Freedom and may of possibly changed my mind. My issues is that the splashbacks in the kitchen kind of need to match. I was thinking Henna Red but I am not sure how closely it would match the feature wall and if it would clash with the Laminate espresso if I do go that colour for the cabinets. Today I thought maybe paint it in a suede effect in a grey-ish/metallic silver colour instead of red and have a more neutral splashback. The floor will be beech floorboards as well. Then I would decorate the lounge room with black, white & silver furniture (I already have a white leather couch) but what about my TV unit which is dark brown? Arrggghhh!! The other option I am toying with is sticking with the red and getting a vinyl made up in black/white or black/silver to go on the feature wall. My biggest concern is definately the brown Any suggestions? I will try and post pictures of the room up tonight/tomorrow after work Trying to make it mine! Please excuse the mess as I have barely been home in the last 2 weeks and my house is like my dumping ground lol

I do like the henna red too donuts but I don't know what paint would match it and I did go to Bunnings before work and the 'boy' there was most unhelpful. Trying to make it mine! Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 8Aug 31, 2008 3:57 pm Looking at your colours now! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 9Aug 31, 2008 4:17 pm Sassy_Bud….your kitchen is very small, so I would strongly suggest you keep to a light colour in the cabinets. I would suggest either a white or off white, this will give your kitchen a larger feel. The white will still go with the Hog Bristle.
Your light flooring is a good idea, nice choice there. I agree with having the feature wall and splash back the same, Henna Red; this will help to tie the two rooms together and make them uniformed. I personally don’t like sued effects, to me they are out dated and are too hard to do touch-ups if needed. Metallic is a very strong effect, unless the room is large you may find it very over powering. Question….which wall in the lounge room would you do as a feature wall? Also what do you mean by getting a vinyl made up……flooring?? I feel the Henna Red behind your white leather lounge will be stunning! Go to a paint store!!!!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 11Aug 31, 2008 4:47 pm Thanks for all your advice Michelle. I agree that the kitchen is really small - I hate it. I was thinking of going with white but felt maybe it would be too overpowering.
The feature wall will be the one to the left of the lounge room behind the couch and the vinyl would be to go the wall but I am thinking against that now. It was going to be a removable one just to give the room some individuality. Can you advise who would be best to go for for paint in WA MIchelle? I don't mind travelling Trying to make it mine! Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 12Aug 31, 2008 5:00 pm Sassy_Bud…..Whites the best colour for small rooms. You will like it, it will make the space seem larger and crisper.
Word of advice…..in one room you should have one feature only or it will be too much and too much for the eye to take in. If you know what I mean. The best place to buy paint is from a paint store, or a hardware store. I’m from NSW so I can’t help you with what’s available over there….BUT I can tell you B’s do not have the best reputation for mixing paint well. Yours might be ok, but your better off with anywhere than there!!! God I hope B’s never look on this site! Here in NSW we have a Mitre 10, do you have some over there? That’s where I go. Thanks a bundle! Trying to make it mine! Re: Need some Open Plan colour advice 14Sep 01, 2008 10:24 am Great!!
That’s the sort of store people should go to get their paints, or a Dulux Trade Centre. Half your luck getting a trade discount …..my Mitre 10 doesn’t give me one, even though they know I send all my clients to them!
