Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 24, 2008 9:47 pm In our meals area (which is open plan with our family room) we've gone for a lovely oak dining setting and matching oak coffee table and side table. They're all in a natural stain so quite light coloured. They were all bought from the same shop so they all match.
I'd now like to get a buffet and a long hall/sofa table to go in the same room. But I don't want to go back to the original shop because I'm looking for something a bit cheaper - maybe even off ebay. My question is - should I try to get the new buffet and table in a colour/type of wood that matches all the rest of the furniture in the room? Or is it okay to introduce a different colour/type? And if I do go for something different, should it be much darker so that it doesn't look like I've tried to colour match and failed? Re: Timber furniture in the open plan meals/family room 2Aug 25, 2008 11:37 am Cathski, do you have any pictures to give us an idea of what colours you have in the house? It might help with selections. It is nice sometimes to mix things up...a bit of variation is nice. Re: Timber furniture in the open plan meals/family room 3Aug 25, 2008 3:33 pm Okey dokey - we went with the Clovelly and Kingston from Oz Design so this is the table :

The walls are a creamy colour and no curtains (yet!) Thanks! Re: Timber furniture in the open plan meals/family room 4Aug 25, 2008 4:15 pm Hi Cathski, I would stick to a white or glass or possibly a woven look in furniture....if you can't find something similar.
White furniture looks fresh with your current style especially the 2 packed finish. The other thing to remember is unless your furniture pieces are going to be right next to each other if the colours look pretty close but are not exact you might find you will not notice and can go for similar pieces. Consider things like different lighting in certain areas of the room........ in saying that I think a mix of furniture is great. If you can match handles on your new pieces that can sometimes tye your furniture together also. The 2 pieces of furniture you are looking at, sometimes serve the same purpose.....(we are currently using a buffet as a hall table and we have also used it as our laptop table)....... or can you utilise one of the spaces with a couple of ottomans or a nice arrangement of potted flowers. Or you may need the storage area...........lots of things to consider I know......... Sorry if I have rambled to much............you may get some other good ideas off other posters though......................good luck Re: Timber furniture in the open plan meals/family room 5Aug 25, 2008 5:59 pm Hi Cathski……Nice choice in furniture!!
I’m surprised at the price from OZ, I can see why you are looking to find something cheaper, but they are lovely pieces. I’m having hard time with this; your chosen pieces are lovely and feel if you mix them with anything else it may cheapen what you have. I have thought about this for a half an hour……I have two hats here, one the decorators and the other someone who also like you likes to save money whenever I can. So the decorator hat tells me…….I would go without until I could afford the matching pieces one at a time. Otherwise you may be disappointed with the final outcome. The save money hat tells me, possible look in a pine shop that sells raw pieces that you could stain in the same stain as the furniture you have bought. I remember when I worked for Freedom Furniture, we used to sell most of the stains the furniture came in, not sure if OZ does this, maybe you could check? Then you could purchase some raw pine pieces and stain them yourself. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Hello!
