Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 15, 2008 8:55 pm Hey guys
Bored tonight? Me?....ok just a little! I have been thinking about my front door. Now with our home we get 2 double doors as out front entrance doors. We have chosen the Corinthian MAD101 with translucent glazing, which will be coloured Dune to match our roof and garage door. We are trying to work out what to do with the sidelights. Initially we were going to have them translucent to match the doors - but because it is such a large section of glass I'm actually not overly in love with the look of so much translucent glass. I then looked on the Corinthian website http://www.doors.com.au/products.php?grp=ext&rnge=pmad and saw the matching sidelights to the Mad101 door and thought these could look good. I'm not sure if PD even offer these - I definately didn't see them at Hopetoun, and also I'm not sure if it would all look 'too much'. My final option was to do the Mad101 double doors with translucent glazing, but to leave the sidelights in clear glass - this would let alot more natural light in, but again I'd have to have some type of window dressing there for privacy, we have this exact setup in our current house and I don't mind it. I was thinking of just a dual roller blind on the sidelight in a whiteish shade to match the rest of the window dressings.... What would you do? Or what did you do? Thanks for any help Oh and I thought I would provide a link to perry's blog where it has the exact doors we will be using but we will be having translucent glass in the bits on the door, so it is just the sidelights I need help with http://www.perryr.com/homeblog/uploaded ... int2-5.JPG My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 2Aug 15, 2008 9:03 pm Bel,
I'm also bored tonight so will continue to answer all your posts! I've got the door with the four horizontal glass panels and a sidelight all with clear glass. I couldn't really give a rats if people can see in as we have doors halfway down the hallway anyway. But I guess the glass type is personal choice. We double glazed the glass so it wouldn't need dressing for thermal reasons. If people want to look in good luck to them! They'll only need to see me in my undies once and the fright would kill them anyway! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Front Door 3Aug 15, 2008 9:05 pm Remind me to stay away from your place Jo
I tend to agree on the clear glass though, I think it looks nice in a larger scale than the translucent, but I like the translucent for privacy reasons.... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 4Aug 15, 2008 9:17 pm I wasn't going to answer this, Bel ( ), but....as you know we are having an 8 panel timber pivot door , with translucent glazing so people can't see straight in, but we also have 1 sidelight, which is glazed with clear glass, as the entrance has a covered portico, so we wanted to let in as much light as possible.
I don't think I will bother putting blinds, or anything, as it's kind of enclosed, and there's only 1 sidelight. Your idea sounds good, though! Jo - if anyone saw me in my undies, that'd be enough to make them run.....and never come back!!!.....but I'm sticking with the translucent glazing anyway!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Front Door 5Aug 15, 2008 10:23 pm Thanks Petal - I appreciate your input, that is the same setup we have at our current home, only one front door with one sidelight that is clear glazed. We just have a crappy white venetian covering it and it looks fine - if you want to put it up you can which is good for light control/privacy
I was going to stick to the clear sidelights with no window coverings but sometimes we purposely don't answer the door and I wouldn't want someone to see us when we are pretending to not be home My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 6Aug 18, 2008 4:23 pm haywgl sometimes we purposely don't answer the door and I wouldn't want someone to see us when we are pretending to not be home Classic!! I've got a funny story about that sort of thing.....another time! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Front Door 7Aug 18, 2008 4:58 pm Looking forward to hearing it!!
I actually was thinking of this more today and I think we will keep the sidelights clear and possibly just put a white roller blind on each side. I have seen plantation shutters in the sidelights that look great, but I'm worried this might look weird if all our other windows have white roller blinds... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 9Aug 18, 2008 5:11 pm Thats true
I was actually trying to put a budget aside for window coverings and have no idea what to set.... I don't even know how many windows we have or what size they are I'm thinking of dual roller blinds were out - I'd prefer the Luxaflex brand for quality...but I have no idea on price... I think there is 10 windows downstairs and maybe 10 again upstairs.. Do we think $15000 would be reasonable ?? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 10Aug 18, 2008 5:12 pm Bel….I have to say, I think window dressing on those small sidelights might look a bit……strange???? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Front Door 11Aug 18, 2008 5:14 pm That's what I thought initially too Mich - the plantation shutter actually look really nice...but again I'm not sure they would fit with the rest of our home...
I haven't seen roller blinds on sidelights before, in our current house we have crappy aliminium venetians on our sidelights and they look ok - but our sidelights will be a bit thinner in the new house... I don't know what other option I have, as I don't want translucent sidelights as they don't go with the look I am after, but I do want the privacy..... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 12Aug 18, 2008 5:19 pm I’d have the glass slightly patterned glazed. Or some type of tint to the glass.
If I was game enough I would take a photo of a house in my street and show you what she has done………..not good! Now no laughing……she has hung sheers up on either side, BUT they only go half way down the glass…..WT?????? It looks REALLY bad! The other thing i was thinking was getting some of that tape people on here have used to put up on the glass and try a bit of DIY..... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 14Aug 18, 2008 5:34 pm haywgl  I promise it would be nothing that bad!!! The other thing i was thinking was getting some of that tape people on here have used to put up on the glass and try a bit of DIY..... Like a frosting????? There’s some nice patterns in that now, I had a look a while back, and apparently its pretty good stuff now. Not like it used to be. But, really….do you want to spend all that money and them, then stick a transfer on the windows??? Go and check out what options you have with the glass that’s available……you might be surprised Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Front Door 15Aug 18, 2008 6:12 pm I have my appointment this Monday - so will definatly go and see
My favourite look is actually clear glass (standard) but its just the privacy factor I worry about...oh well I'm sure we will think of something My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 16Aug 19, 2008 8:44 am Problem solved!
I just sent off an email to my CSC after looking on the PD website and a few bloggers (Phoenix was one!) I asked if we could just have bricks in lieu of sidelights, and she said yes Wooohoo! No glass decision to make My karma ran over your dogma Re: Front Door 17Aug 19, 2008 10:11 am Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Front Door 19Aug 19, 2008 1:59 pm Good decision - we have just moved into a brand new Masterton built home (living in our squishy old house got the better of us so are renting whilst our home is built) - it has clear sidelights which freak me out as everyone can see straight into our living and kitchen areas.
Will learn to live with it since it is only a rental and we are in a battleaxe block so is private but not nice when people drop by and can see every aspect of your home / belongings!! Re: Front Door 20Aug 19, 2008 4:07 pm Opaque glass sidelights would also solve the problem (is that the same as translucent??) whilst still letting in light and would not need window furnishings.
That's what we are doing, but glad you have found a solution you are happy with. As long as you have some glass in your door which lets light in, you don't really need sidelights.
