Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 07, 2008 12:50 pm Hi Michelle
We have Austral Bricks Hawthorn bricks with off-white mortar. I chose Paperbark for the render, which will go on the arch at the front, and side pillars across to the arch. The garage door I selected is the rectangular imprint one, also in Paperbark. I am now thinking that the Paperbark is too yellow for my liking. DH thinks a darker colour like Jasper would be better , but (athough I LOVE Jasper as a colour) I think it may be too dull against a dark brick like the Hawthorn, even with the off white mortar . The timber windows at the front will be painted "Winterhaven". I was thinking of changing the render & garage door to Dune. What do you think??? Oh, and you can see the whole house if you click on my blog link and scroll down a bit (sorry, I'm hopeless with putting photos on here!!! ) PS Before others ask, yes we're under construction and I don't know if they'll let me do it, but I figure it's worth asking - they've mucked us around SO much they SHOULD do it just to appease us!!! Whether that line works or not...we'll see!!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Render Colour 4Aug 07, 2008 1:50 pm I went out to an estate today for a drive to look for some colour inspiration and noticed quite a few houses with Hawthorn bricks (well not exactly sure if they were Hawthorn, but they were dark bricks very similar none the less) with Dune garage doors and rener - I think it looked really good.
We are having Jasper render, but with lighter bricks, and Dune as our garage door and front door and roof. I was originallly going with paperbark but found it a bit too yellow IRL for our colour scheme, I noticed what looked like white garage doors in a few estates today, I would actually love this colour but I didn't see it as an option in the brochure PD gave us, so we will probably stick to dune. I think the Jasper render would be too dark for your bricks Petal, but maybe a Dune render and Dune garage door, or Dune render and Jasper Garage door. I'm sure Mich would be able to give some more help, but I do agree with you PD better comply with your wishes after all the stuff arounds you have had!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Render Colour 5Aug 07, 2008 2:05 pm Yeah, Bel - I agree. As much as I love Jasper, I really think it will get lost against the Hawthorn bricks.
DH is so happy with the bricks (that *I* insisted on, and he was not 100% sure!!!! ) that he's saying he wished we'd done the rendered bits in mini bricks as well, and just left it unrendered. I think he's thinking the Jasper will look a bit like the bricks...????? Anyway, I like the Dune - more of a 'stone' colour, which is what I always wanted. Actually I think I'll go with "Time Capsule" for the render, which is very similar to Dune - slightly warmer - and Dune garage door. How gorgeous are those white garage doors??!! They look so clean and fresh! You could always ask PD - I don't remember it being offered, but if that's what you want, tell them!!!! Right, I think I'll go and ring E & see how I get on...... cross everything for me!!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Render Colour 7Aug 07, 2008 2:22 pm Petal,
I actually really like the Paperbark & don't think it has got any yellowness to it? Mish might disagree here......... A workmate is currently builder & they have used paperbark double strength on their portico & around windows & it is definetley not yellow! Also like Dune though so I'm sure it will look good either way Re: Render Colour 8Aug 07, 2008 2:30 pm Hi JoK
If you put the 2 together, the Paperbark definitely has a "yellowness" to it. It's not even that I don't like Paperbark, it's just that I had a picture in my mind, and it was more stone than that. Just called PD. Our CSR is away sick so spoke to another girl, who said she'll ask someone more senior who is on annual leave, back Monday As long as they say yes, it doen't really matter if it's next week . .......I told her we'd had lots of problems, and I thought this was the least they could do!!!!! I think she could see by the file...hmm.. Anyway, hope I can change them - guess I'll find out Monday! Surely after the drama's you've had they will look after you! I'm sure paperbark will look fine also if you can't change Re: Render Colour 11Aug 07, 2008 4:12 pm Thanks Bel & Jo - will let you know what transpires........
BTW - we have plaster - AND cornice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well...it's on the flors, but, hey - it's there!! Oh, and a fake front door - which is good, b/c I can finally get my head around how it works!!! (pivot door!) They'll need to do a LOT of work if they're plnning on starting the plaster on Monday, but at least it's progress!!!! What about the colour of VJ's cladding? Is a bit more browny? and is with Hawthorn bricks. DUne good too though! Hope they let you change! Re: Render Colour 14Aug 07, 2008 7:24 pm Thanks donuts - yes, VJ's place looks gorgeous. I had a look, and it may be that "Time Capsule" colour that I've requested for the render - just a touch more brown in it, but v similar to Dune. Because the garage is not immediately next to any render, Dune would be fine for the garage door. Let's hope they say "Yes!" as I'm feeling quite excited about these colours now!!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Render Colour 15Aug 07, 2008 9:01 pm I don’t see paperbark as being yellowish….more on the cream side than yellow. It’s a nice colour.
Jasper is too deep a colour with your bricks; it will all blend it way too much. Dune will work well; it will give contrast to the dark bricks, which is what you need. BUT…..what about the paperbark garage door????? How many colours do you want on the front of your house? I think it would look best if render balanced with garage doors…….. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Render Colour 16Aug 07, 2008 9:02 pm Get a sample pot of the paperbark, paint up a board and put it next to your bricks.
That will tell what colour it will throw with your bricks. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Render Colour 17Aug 07, 2008 11:10 pm Yes, I've asked to change the garage door as well (I did say that ! ) No, I don't want a multi-coloured house!!!
Glad you think the Jasper is wrong - that was DH's suggestion, but, as I said, I think he just thought it would look like the bricks... If you look at 'Time Capsule' it's almost identical to Colorbond 'Dune' - and I HAVE to pick a garage door from the Colorbond range. I figure if I have 'TC' render and a Dune door (which are separated by plenty of bricks) they'll look the same in the 'big picture' of the house....if that makes sense...??!!! Funny you sjould say that about the sample pot - that's what I suggested to DH, but he'd made up his mind that he didn't love Paperbark Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again.
