I had picked my whites - Dulux Vivid White for the skirting etc and Natural White for our walls. I want to keep it as 'clean' as possible, and 'warm' but not creamy. Unfortunately I now have to choose Taubmans colours (after changing our builder). The Taubmans spectrum doesn't seem to be any where near as good as Dulux and I have struggled to work out if the ones I have picked - which I have tried to match to the Dulux ones - are still as good. How do you know if a white is cold or warm? I know that some are really obvious as they will have a yellow/red tint or a green/blue tint but some of the 'whiter' whites are harder to work out. I have tentatively picked Crisp White for the skirting etc and Tahira White for the walls. Would you suggest I get a sample pot of each, and paint some cardboard, to make sure? Hi Tash...Thats why I'm a Dulux girl Both the colours you have chosen should work well...as I always suggest to my clients, yes, get sample pots. Better to be safe than sorry. My cousin has Tahira through her house, its a really nice colour and goes with everything. She is an artist her artwork looks fantastic on the colour. Good choice. I am on to my sixth sample pot.... oops. Oh well, rather spend a few dollars on the pots now than have to repaint a whole house later if I don't like the colour. I still like the Tahira but it is VERY white, hardly any different to the Crisp White, so I am having a bit more of a play around. Thanks for your help! My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 5Feb 26, 2015 5:52 pm No problem...it can be a hard choice. You see in your mind what you want, but its hard finding it. Good luck. We have limited white paints to choose from (in our standard builders range) they are dulux colours and 'natural white' is the least creamy colour to choose... Although it is far from the colour I was after (lexicon, Casper white, snowy mountain) I'm trying to get my head around having 'natural white' at the moment we have it paired with vivid white for the ceiling & natural white for walls, doors, skirting etc Do you think vivid white is the right choice for the ceiling? Should we use this for skirtings/doors instead of natural white? The rest of our colour there throughout the house is grey/white. I really wanted a cool crisp looking paint, but now just trying to work with what we can. Thanks in advance Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 7Jun 10, 2015 6:49 pm Hi there, Vivid white is as good a white you will get with the building company and its a good white. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 8Jun 10, 2015 7:40 pm Thanks Michelle. I liked vivid white - They are saying we can't use vivid white for the walls though but can for the ceiling only (something about it not giving enough coverage for the walls and they only do 2 coats) Natural white looked to be the whitest white they offer, but to me it looks cream So with natural white walls, vivid white ceiling what is the best option for skirtings/doors? Thank you Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 9Jun 15, 2015 9:51 pm You do not need to choose taubmans colours. All manufacturers of paint can mix all competitors colours. Can you imagine a company that would limit its clientele to only its own colour names? Vivid white is untinted white, which will be exactly the same throughout paint manufacturers. It is simply titanium dioxide and binder. The ceiling paint will not be vivid white. Ceiling paint (from absolutely any manufacturer) is slightly grey. This is a new build, there is absolutely no reason you can not have vivid white (untinted white) on your walls. Is this a plastered brick or plasterboard build? Even if plasterboard 2 coats of a half decent paint should be enough to cover the blue colour and hide the sheen marks from the joins. If they are telling you otherwise, you should be second guessing the quality of the trade paint the painters are using. If they really are using some cheap rubbish, it will not make a noticeable difference unless the tint being added brings the colour to something noticeably 'NOT WHITE' . If they can get coverage for any type of white with 2 coats, they can get the same coverage with 'Vivid White'. As for your trim colours, you have an important question do ask the builder; "if we choose white trim, will you use a water based enamel?" They MUST NOT use oil based enamels if you are selecting a stark white as this will yellow inside the house if not exposed to UV light. This means if you choose stark vivid white for trim, they MUST supply you with acrylic enamel painted trims, which is not as high a gloss level as an oil based enamel. This must also be applied by spray or you will have brush marks. If you ask for a tinted white, something like lexicon or natural white are as white as you should go for a high gloss oil based enamel for the trim. Anything whiter will not have enough colourant to fill the binder and you would end up with yellowing trim within 12 months. I am not a colour consultant, i am a technical consultant. I deal with far too many tradesmen whose' builders have no idea about the technical properties of interior paint. have a look through this colour chart. Any of these are available in taubmans trade paint. just ensure when u order the colour you state that the colour is 'Dulux -colour name'. Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 10Jun 16, 2015 9:16 am It's not unusual for builders to want to go to 3 coats to do whites though. I think many won't even go as far as natural white without worrying about coverage issues. Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 11Jun 16, 2015 9:59 pm Hi there, Can I jump on here to ask Michelle a question. I think I read an old post of yours, that you prefer to paint ceilings in a low sheen white, the same colour as the walls? So If we are looking at Dulux Natural White for walls we would paint it on the ceiling in the low sheen too? Undecided on Vivid White or Lexicon Qtr for trims, any thoughts with grey carpet, would Vivid White contrast better? Next question what about the doors, is it better to contrast as per the trims ie Vivid White or could we go with Natural White but in the semi gloss perhaps? I hope I'm making sense here!! Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 12Jun 16, 2015 11:23 pm Do not put a low sheen acrylic on the ceiling. Ceilings require ceiling paint. ceiling paint is not just super flat, it is also very high solids / low binder and will breathe. A paint designed and branded as wall paint is just that; for walls. You put wall paint on your ceiling, you will have mould issues and effectively the whole system will become heavy and blister, for 2 reasons; weight and moisture retention. Sorry, I'm not getting replies to messages. Yes low sheen, but often I do semi gloss like I have in my house. If your wall colour is very light and you wont see much of a difference if the ceiling is white, do the one colour. Will pop back in later. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 15Jun 25, 2015 3:58 pm The answer I supplied mentions acrylic, this is not the basis of the reply, just a detail. I am aware of the question and all its detail. A low sheen is a wall paint. It really should not (not must not) but should not go on the ceiling. Interior designers might love it, but you will hate it if it fails. When one mentions low sheen acrylic, it means 'water based plastic (acrylic polymer) emulsion'. Ceiling paint and wall paint are both acrylics. Sorry bit frustrated, you made no sense in your argument against my advice. The windows are south facing and don't get a lot of light so we want a fairly bright white to lighten the room,no cream or grey tinges. I was thinking Natural White for walls and Vivid White trims, or can you suggest something else? Hubby is thinking of Vivid White all over but will that look too cold?? Appreciate any colour suggestions Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 18Jul 06, 2015 5:54 am I'm hubby Vivid White all over.....and no it won't look too cold especially if you get a lot of natural light in the room. You get to dress the room now and use warm colours to balance it out. The decision is between natural white and whisper white... Vivid white ceiling (or thinking perhaps ceiling should be the same colour as the walls?) We will have grey tiles and charcoal carpet... Anyone have any thoughts on which white paint would be better? (I don't want it to look creamy, but these are the whitest whites in our builders range) Re: How to find the right "white" for your home. 20Aug 11, 2015 6:22 pm First_Home_Adventure So after months and months I'm still sitting on the fence about our whites.... Although natural white is so light you could just do the one colour for ceiling and walls as you said. For a slight contrast you could also go with - Ceiling - Vivid White Walls - Natural White Trims & Doors - Vivid White Hope this helps a little.
