Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jul 06, 2008 12:01 pm Hi Michelle and everyone, I was hoping you could give me a second opinion on an idea I've had for our bedroom.
We've got a victorian style fireplace - arch shaped wrought iron insert surrounded by a square frame with quite a deep mantle. The chimney has been blocked off so I'd like to remove it to make more room to walk through without bumping my arms. But I want to do it with minimum cost and bother (baby no. 1 on the way, so much to do!). So what I was thinking was to leave the arched central bit, which is in good nick and painted, and just remove the frame and mantle. In my mind this looks quite stylish, maybe with a narrow shelf in place of the mantle, and one of our big paintings above. But maybe it would actually look weird??? I've seen other frameless fireplaces but of the modern square variety. Could it work with the arch? Very grateful for a second opinion. Jane Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 2Jul 06, 2008 2:55 pm Janeb…..is the fireplace going to be used, or will it be left there for effects only.
Also, it would make it so much easier if you could post a photo of the fireplace. This link will tell you how to post the photo. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=3466 Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 4Jul 06, 2008 3:07 pm Helyn Quote: The chimney has been blocked off Quote: Janeb…..is the fireplace going to be used Michelle, she can't use it with the chimney blocked off!! The chimney can be unblocked. Ideally I'd remove the whole thing and knock out the chimney breast to make more space in our tiny rooms, but we don't have the cash! I'll take a photo when I get home - thanks for the link. Jane Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 7Jul 07, 2008 11:33 pm Janeb, Should not be too hard to do what you want.
and it would look OK with just the firplace and arch there. I've seen a few done. Just make sure you keep the old parts because one day maybe you will want to re-do it - or at least to might sell them to someone who wants to restore their house to original. Steve Hi Jane, This of course is just IMHO ... People pay high premiums for houses with original features like your fireplace. I can guarantee you that it will be your fireplace, polish boards, high ceilings etc that will sell your house in the future if or when you decide to sell. Is there another way your furniture can be rearranged in order to make the room flow better? Is there another way your furniture can be rearranged in order to make the room flow better? Mrs B Hi Mrs B, I do agree, but unfortunately there's just no other way to arrange the room - it's kind of a long thin room with a door on one wall, fireplace on one, window and big radiator on a third, so there's really only one wall big enough for the bed. I was thinking along the lines of Steve's suggestion though (thanks Steve!) - store it and put it back if we sell! Jane Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 10Jul 08, 2008 11:05 am Hi Jane,
I agree, Steves idea is the best, at least you can put back the mantle in the future. Mrs B Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 11Jul 08, 2008 11:25 am Would you be able to provide dimensions of the room, or a rough sketch, I'm sure we'd there would be a lot of forumites happy to provide opinions....er.....comments.
I'll also look through my back catalog of realestate.com photos for some ideas. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 14Jul 09, 2008 10:52 pm In all simplicity-
Swing the door from the other side. It will immediately make the room much more inviting and a better use of space - and you'll love it. I can see the issue you have - so just change the way the door enters the room. It's all about when the house was desigened / the period - life was very private and not wanting people to be able to perhaps see you while you are in your bedroom. Much easier than ripping out the fireplace. Steve Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 15Jul 10, 2008 10:24 am Why not make the door a cavity slide……that takes care of any space issue! Unfortunately there still wouldn't be room at the end of the bed to walk through, since there's only one wall that can fit the bed and that's opp the fireplace. (sigh) Re: Fireplace with no frame - weird or stylish??? 17Jul 10, 2008 1:05 pm Is this room a bedroom….or once a lounge room/sitting room??? Get rid of the most of it and decorate what’s left with a nice mantle. Some nice smelling candles and photos will do the trick. Your room is small, so is mine, its hard to much with small rooms, so make the best of it. Post some photos when you’re finished, it should look really cute!!!
