Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 22, 2015 10:07 am Still a long way to go even to get this built, but trying to work out our internal colour scheme well in advance. We are wanting to do a Black and White theme through the the house. Entry, Kitchen, Dining and Family will be 600x600 Diamond White porcelian tiles with white walls and ceilings. Internal doors will be gloss black with gloss white frames. Kitchen will be black base cabinets, white stone tops and white overhead cabinets. Extra colour will come in the way of red splash back and red insert to front of island bench. Bedrooms and Theatre will be Black carpet with white walls and ceilings. Colour will come from a feature wall and matching bed linen. Hopefully that will give you a basic idea of what we are planning. My question is..... Is it possible to do a ALL Black Theatre room? Black carpet, black walls and black ceiling? The room itself only has 1 high window that is fixed. This will be covered most of the time with a black blind. Maybe add colour with the lounge itself? Minimal lighting from downlights on dimmer switch. Is this possible? Or am I just crazy? Lol Below is plan of original design. Theatre is the same size but mirror reversed. Plan also shows sliding door to Alfresco but we have removed this and replace with highlight window. http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb286/roomeat/Clarendon_zpsi06qwmpu.jpg Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 2Apr 22, 2015 10:26 am Something like this.... Not sure if my room is big enough to do this? Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 3Apr 22, 2015 11:55 am Hi roo, we are getting monument walls and ceiling with a grey carpet in the theatre. Having downlights on dimmers. We have two windows that will be covered with a cassette and guide blind to prevent light. The room size is about 3.8wide and 5.8m long It's going to be really dark but thats what I want as I'll be putting in a projector instead of a TV. Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 4Apr 23, 2015 12:46 pm Monument is almost black yeah? We have Black carpet through out the house so I'm wondering if I should maybe go a slightly lighter colour for walls and ceiling? Black might be a bit too much? Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 5Apr 23, 2015 10:41 pm Monument is a charcoal but it will be pretty much a black in that room setting. I worried about the dark cave look as well but figured it is a home theatre and I want it configured right. Also its only paint, can be repainted later if I feel its too much. Couple of pics of what it might look like. Although no where near as large. I'll be putting in some acoustic panels and maybe big framed movie posters or something to help break it up a little. For a theatre, I think it's great. I don't want a theatre myself and would not consider black walls in my home in any room, but with your colour scheme, I think it's a brilliant idea (for a theatre). Do it! Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 7Apr 24, 2015 1:39 am I am having a black Matt ceiling and will more than likely have some patterned black paper or material covering the walls. I will use burgundy as well to create the look I am going for. I will get a very dark but patterned carpet as I think black will show every specific of dirt. Check out as forum build threads as there are plenty of picks to spy. Not crazy at all Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 8Apr 24, 2015 2:10 am Yeah black carpet is bad for "showing" everything. You need black with speckle and that hides it;-) I had a thought today, and it bloody hurt lol, but might look at a dado rail (is that what they are called?) with a black patterned wallpaper or the block inspired Seagrass lol and charcoal wall above. What's everyone's thought on that with maybe gloss white skirt and rail? Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 9Apr 24, 2015 3:06 am Roo spot on mate.... thats what i am doing as you can have different colours and maybe even acoustic treatments worked into it. It is worth thinking through because the acoustics is a big part of the room and the room is the most expensive part of the set up. I actually started with my theatre and worked the house design around it from there. You can get right into it but I am drawing the line at a full Atmos set up with a big cinemascope screen. I actually found a build on avs that has almost teh same dimensions as my room and it won threatre of the year I think and I will shamelessly take styling queues from it. hehe Feast your eyes on this thread, its worth reading just to see how he did everything. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/19-dedica ... hread.html Cheers and keep everyone posted. Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 10Apr 24, 2015 4:31 am Full atmos i think you and i are going to get along lmao. I have been communicating with the guys at Jensen (some of the best speakers IMHO ) to work out the best combination / configuration for full 11.2 system using a Onkyo receiver Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 11Apr 24, 2015 8:05 am For my room the colour is domino on the walls, going to be a white roof and gloss white skirts and architraves. I did want a dark roof but I'm not allowed lol. Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 12Apr 24, 2015 9:50 am You'll regret a light coloured ceiling in a HT room, particulary if you run a large screen. My ceiling was done with Dulux suede effects paint in a real dark colour that I can't quite remember the name of, which is no longer on their colour cards, but I'm sure it can still be made up. It gave the ceiling the look of a night sky without the stars. I've had to put my new HT room on the backburner for now, but it will happen eventually. Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 13Apr 26, 2015 9:07 am We are just doing the front wall in Monument and the side walls are already dark-ish. We don't tend to watch in daytime hours so figure normal block out curtains will be fine for window coverings. Also curtains in the front (esp the corners) surrounding the screen. We haven't landed on the ceiling colour yet but may update at some stage. The Suede effects is an interesting idea thanks! Suspect the wall colour may have to go darker so the variation is not so much. As bpratt stated above ceiling and side walls are important as you will get light bleed back from the screen. You want a non reflective surface. Yes the suede effect does sound interesting. Bpratt, details kind Sir, details....... Re: Theatre / Media Room Black on Black? 15Apr 26, 2015 10:58 pm Thanks. My husband's thinking about it... I want him to think faster as I want to paint before we put carpet in. I think the colour was named similar to Midnight or Moonlight. To me and to others it looked like a night sky, rather than simply a ceiling painted black, as it had a form of texture to it. You basically brush it on with a thick brush in a criss-cross fashion, although the first coat you can roll it on. It's a lot of hard work painting a ceiling like that, but the finish is worth it.
