Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Sep 25, 2014 9:20 am We are looking at re painting the exterior of our house. This year we will redo our driveway in brick, and also extend the carport and replace it with a pitched style carport. We are looking at a grey. The colours we like are Dulux Miller Mood as it's still bright but a bluey grey. I got 4 litres of this to test on the front as it looked really good on the catalogue Dulux image below... That said it looks SUPER blue now, although I think that might be the Windows and trims/door that are currently blue. Either way we think its too "blue" The more warm greys are a bit too dark. We tried "Balance" in the Haymes range but it was too creamy. The darker colour on the back of the house is timeless grey. That is also a bit too dark. The bottom one on the base of the back of the house pic (below) seems to work well in hindsight but I can't remember what colour that was. I still have the sample pot there. We are basically after a neutral grey... in the light to medium range. enough to show off the white windows that we will do. I have attached some photos. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Help with exterior grey colour 2Sep 25, 2014 9:30 am Glad you have weatherboard and not just render. House across the road from us redid their render in grey and it just looked like cement. Have you considered dulux timeless grey? Re: Help with exterior grey colour 3Sep 25, 2014 9:33 am Timeless grey is the darker one that is below... on the back of the house, bottom right. I think the dulux house works so well because there is so much white there... I think I'll paint the trims in white first.. and then decide... i think it looks very blue because of the trims too... Re: Help with exterior grey colour 4Sep 25, 2014 9:42 am Usually the brochures will tell you what color they've used. Maybe you could go to a dulux store and ask? Re: Help with exterior grey colour 5Sep 25, 2014 9:54 am trixee Usually the brochures will tell you what color they've used. Maybe you could go to a dulux store and ask? The colour is Miller Mood which looked very neutral in the picture, and what I used on the house but its actually very blue. Re: Help with exterior grey colour 6Sep 25, 2014 9:57 am Musing looks like a more neutral colour, especially on this document http://www.dulux.com.au/pdf/colourBooklets/exterior.pdf Re: Help with exterior grey colour 7Sep 25, 2014 10:37 am Sorry, I must have missed bits in your original post, I blame lack of coffee Hm, most of the nice greys in the brochure are a bit dark. The lighter colours that stand out to me are Tranquil Retreat, Stepney, Pommier, Musing. Musing and Pommier both have a blue tinge. Or, what about the colorbond Shale Grey colour? I guess all you can really do is get the sample pots and keep trying until you find one you like. Re: Help with exterior grey colour 8Sep 25, 2014 11:49 am Thanks, so on the outside the general thing is that the colours will be much "lighter/cooler" than if painted indoors? I have a sample pot of Tranquil retreat, but will paint the rest of the front white first and then test.. The sides of the house look really nice in Miller Mood, but the front, as its east facing it's in shade which makes it look cooler too Re: Help with exterior grey colour 9Sep 25, 2014 12:10 pm I think exterior colours are generally lighter because the sun can wash them out, or that's what I'm told. Re: Help with exterior grey colour 10Sep 25, 2014 12:26 pm Also what colours would you suggest for the eaves (wooden board eaves) and the gutters. i think white for the gutters... and then white for the eaves too... but on the third pic maybe the eave boards in grey, then the beams that come across should be in white? they are the same beams that go into the house and become the rafters inside... Thanks again guys, much appreciated! Re: Help with exterior grey colour 11Sep 25, 2014 12:59 pm I think I'm reaching the limit of my abilities here! I think someone else with better skills than me can chime in Eaves are usually white, but in this case you may want to reverse it. I think it will look good either way, grey and white is a classic combination and will look beautiful. Also, yes we are doing the driveway in recycled brick, but removing the horrible carport and replacing with a pitched roof (same as house) and extending carport to be 4x6m.... instead of the terrible carport that is there now.. should look much better and match the rest of the house, also the brick driveway will be extended to be out on the right... so another spot off the street and a circular formal garden with hedges and larger trees on the fence side will be put in all takes time plans are in with council now we chose lexicon half for the windows, doing the first gloss coat this weekend, primed last weekend. very exciting! I was thinking the windows white... and then the boards grey and the iron grey... with the posts and gutters white?
