Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 25, 2014 11:47 am I wasn't really sure where to put this question so feel free to move it. We want to create a fireplace made from real natural stone with a gas log fire in it. Like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ But the ones at the home show were not real stone but a concrete mould made to look like stone. Anyone know where I can get the real thing from in Melbourne. And would the area underneath it need to be on a slab? They have an excellent showroom not far from us and are also in Victoria. http://www.ecooutdoor.com.au/ or what you are after is their walling particularly their drystone walling http://www.ecooutdoor.com.au/walling/dry-stone/ Stewie Re: Natural stone fireplace 4Oct 15, 2014 7:45 pm Not too late at all Stewie. I will show my Husband and see what he thinks of them. He isn't a fan of stacked stone though so we will skip that one. Nor am I that's why I said in my previous post - Quote: and the overused stackstone types Bear in mind though that the distinction between stackstone and drywall is a bit blurry. There are some drywalls that look terrible and some stackstone that doesn't look too bad ( except for the more common overused types of course ). Your option is to go for full stone cladding which apart from being thick - 75 to 125mm thick and is really heavy meaning you will probably have to beef up your floor or go for the thinner - 35 to 50mm thick above types. Some of the 35mm limestone and sandstone cladding I've seen recently look really smart and are almost indistinguishable from a big block wall seen on older houses. Stewie Re: Natural stone fireplace 6Nov 10, 2014 11:18 am So you think for the thinner stone we wouldn't need to beef up the floor? I like the sandstone/limestone idea. Re: Natural stone fireplace 7Nov 10, 2014 11:38 am Even with using the thinner stone ( and depending on how wide and how tall the total fireplace is going to be ) you may still end up increasing the weight on the floor of 200kg + just for the stonework. Add 50-70kg for the steel gas log fire frame and you're looking at close to 300kg extra weight. I'd be looking at another bearer supported by a couple of piers under that area. It would be pretty easy to work out all the weight involved just by calculating the sq/m of stone x the weight per sq m then add the framing and the weight of the fireplace. Stewie Re: Natural stone fireplace 8Nov 10, 2014 1:29 pm Oh ok. We will have to do the somes. Hubby wont be happy about having to re-inforce the floor but we will see how we go.
