Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 31, 2014 12:59 pm Hi there, Just a quick question for the experienced. I'm building a modest 4x2 at the moment (thread is in my signature if anyone is interested). The slab was laid in the past fortnight. Provided nothing goes terribly wrong, I think handover in late October is a reasonable timeframe to work with. So at the moment I'm at the thumb twiddling stage of the build. There isn't much to do, some days I almost forget I'm building! So being a proactive person, I'm now thinking that perhaps I should spend my Saturdays shopping around for flooring, window furnishings, kitchen splashbacks and furniture. But will I be wasting my time? Is it too ridiculous to lock in floors 7 months out from handover? What is the rule of thumb I should be following? I'm forever conscious of the fact that the build will be finishing at the end of the year. I will not be the only person who wants to be 'moved in by Christmas' so I definitely don't want to be caught out. All tips are welcome! Go shop, decide what you want, find out how much notice that trade generally needs to book in and then go back in a few months to lock it all in. I already have a fairly good idea in my head of what I want and I am loathe to make multiple trips! I guess what I was after were examples of where people have made bookings for say painters or floors many months out and it has all worked out. I think the general vibe is that I shouldn't worry about it anytime soon. In a blink a product can be discontinued! I would't be booking tradies any time too soon, they could get caught up elsewhere and may not get too your project. Make contact with yours trades see if they are interested in quoting and let them know what the time frame MAY be. Keeping an eye on your selections so early is a good idea, you will be surprised how many new products will pop up in the next 7 months.
