Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 29Jan 27, 2014 8:08 am Hey Eli, I didn't think you were being rude at all... We did pull a few things out of our build and do them ourselves afterwards like all the kitchen appliances as I really wanted Miele this time, our stone bath and all main floor tiles, carpet etc, so yes we did splurge on a few things so you're right. With the HT we have no idea and I guess took the advice from HNorman at the time and truly what we heard when it gets turned up was just amazing. does the amp and sub make a difference or is the sound all speakers?? We couldn't afford a full blown HT but in saying that what we have purchased still came to about $8k in materials. The biggest being the AMP, 3D projector and actually our speakers were $1500 for the pack, so not sure about that one there were some other items discounted and they gave is the sub for free so it probably came from that. Also, we did get them almost 2 years agoo so prices have probably reduced since then too. Anyway, in saying that I do want the sound to be right, and now we know due to stupid beams in the roof our front speakers can't go in the right place then I might go back there today and get their opinion on a free standing centre speaker and get 2 proper wall speakers for the sides. if we have the 2 jamo in the ceiling at the back (already in) then if you get different types at the front - will the sound quality differ or are the front ones the most important for sound? we already have put the 6th speaker in our Alfresco that is wired up through the roof from the HT so we could put a 2nd out there and return the unopened box of 2 and exchange for wall speakers. I returned for a store credit a load of surplus speaker wire so I could then use that to go towards good centre speaker. One thing I thought I would mention if it also makes a difference - our HT is quite small - certainly not a 2 car garage size so I don't want the walls shaking... It's only 3300 wide and 5200mm long. By the time you have the couch in that needs to sit a good 500mm off the back wall to recline and the bulkhead, we're only going to be about 3.5m from the speakers - so the sound only has to fill a small space. thanks all for the advice it has been very helpful and as we have a unit in a centre speaker on top sounds like the better way to go. Hi Lilac, Yes, all components will change the sound to some degree, but so will the room. 2 years ago the speakers may have been more expensive, I just searched on Google and Selby had them listed at $226 a pair. Being Harvey Norman I'm sure they made a decent profit! While having the same speakers all around is nice, unless you step up in the price range a bit then I doubt you will notice too much difference. You definitely want the front 3 to be as close as possible, that's the main thing. That is still a decent size room, nice and long. If you let me know how much your budget is for the fronts I may be able to help with some suggestions? Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 31Jan 27, 2014 10:15 am all 3 fronts I will keep the same brand, but the 2 on the side we want on the wall - so centre speaker can sit on the unit with the sides wall mounted. what brands do you suggest. there is no budget - just not stupid prices as we have already bought the others. I guess in credit there's $200 so probably won't get much with that so just adding to what we have spent. happy for you to give me a recommendation of brand and price. we've spent this much, don't want to go to this trouble and have it sound wrong. are you from the industry? Eli - I was just looking on line for speakers and discovered the 8.5cst pack version of what we got (ours are 6.5cst) on the HN website - this has made me realise we didn't spend $1500 on speakers - this was in fact a pack of 5 speakers and sub together - not feeling so ripped off... ( our 5th speaker was never delivered nor the sub - we thought we had to order a sub but decided against it - then one arrived with our order and the guy made out it was a freebie - in fact he was just sending us what we should have got to start with!). I am not going to go in to the muddle we have been in with our order but to say, our sales rep has confirmed we should not use our ceiling speakers on the wall they are for ceiling only so I am going to return the unopened box of 2 speakers to the store and will exchange for a centre speaker and 2 wall speakers. as my credits are with them, then I will get from Harvey. I will have to pay more but it needs to be right. this however is now not giving me confidence in our installer as he should know that what he was going to do, is not right.. As we now have an extra speaker I will put that in the rumpus as eventually that will be our pool table/games room. Anyway Thanks - you have unknowingly unravelled a big mess for me and until now I have been thinking our original sales guy sold us half a solution, it turns out to be a mix up in delivery and the new sales guy that took over not covering off what we ordered. Hi Lilac, Glad I was able to help in a round-about way. And yes, I would have some hesitations on the installer based off what you have said. Just make sure that when you pick out your new speakers that you keep all the dimensions in mind and exactly where they will go. Cheers, Eli Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 34Jan 28, 2014 6:46 pm Quote: Hi Lilac, Glad I was able to help in a round-about way. I am thinking of getting a long centre speaker that I have measured if the screen is to sit central between the unit and ceiling can be no more than 250mm high so have plenty of room there. Everything I have read says to keep the center speaker and side speakers level if you can but to be honest most images I've seen have had the side speakers higher as they sit to the side of a TV and the center below the tv. In our case they should horizontally be quite close in height off the floor and all facing forwards. Hopefully this should all be on track now... so thank you! Another thing to look at if you really want to do things properly is to have all 3 front speakers of the same size and types, which makes an AT screen all that more important. That said, if you are happy with what you've got, then that's all that matters. When I get to do my HT room, I'll be going for a 140" AT screen and whilst not all my front speakers are the same, they are very similar. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Yes, it is best to keep the tweeters at the same height where possible. Like the images you have seen, having the speakers to the side and centre below is quite popular (but not necessarily best for sound), because as Bpratt says, you really need an AT screen to get everything lined up perfectly. It's not optimal having them different heights, but sometimes there just isn't much choice! Angling the centre speaker upwards towards the listener is one thing people do to combat this. I think you'll be fine with how you have described the speakers, maybe just think about moving the centre speaker to the front of the cabinet so that you don't get immediate reflections off the top of it. Still deciding the best way to get the speakers raised up off the floor to sit above the fake wall! Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 38Apr 05, 2014 7:59 pm Your wall paint colour turned out amazing. Wish I could say the same for my build. It's giving off a pink/purple tint. http://seaview39.blogspot.com/2014/04/paint.html Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 39Apr 05, 2014 8:31 pm This is my Home Theatre with the speakers installed. DH painted the HT a couple of weeks ago and we went Domino. Oh I love it! A really dark deep grey/black and against the white skirtings and cornices it's amazing. We have decided to not paint the ceiling at this point. if reflection is an issue their's plenty of paint and an easy fix if we need to do it later so for now we have just done all the walls. Spoke to Harvey Norman and he is speaking to their supplier on the closest wall speakers to match the rear ceiling speakers already installed in terms of sound. We will then take the 2 remaining ceiling speakers back and swap them for two front wall speakers and centre speaker. The centre bar speaker we get I will put on top of the wall cabinet and the screen will then be just above it. The wall speakers we will spray the same as the wall paint and they will sit in line with the centre speaker (as in practically the same height) and will have one installed facing the couch recliners on each side bulkhead wall. I'll take a photo once done but as far as the wall color........ Love it!
