Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 10, 2014 9:47 am Hi All, We are in the midst of installing our home theatre and I have decided to paint it dark before the screen and wall speakers go up and the furniture arrives... BUT I am scared to make a mistake and am stuck on the right colour to use. it's a dedicated home theatre that is closed off from the main entry with double doors. even though dedicated I would still like to keep it in line with the rest of the house so looking at a dark charcoal grey. Our carpet is dark grey/black and we have taubmans crisp white ceiling and architraves and doors. Wall is currently Taubmans crystal gazing. the rest of the house walls are also crystal gazing so quite a cool grey. ANYWAY - I have got a sample pot of Dulux Domino and it's basically black, which scares me a little. there is also Wayward grey that could be nice but haven't got a sample pot of this. Any ideas / photo's that anyone has done??? We have a bulkhead at one end of the room that a 110" screen fixed screen with black velvet frame will sit in and the whole room is about 5.3m x 3.8m. Any help would be appreciated. Here's a couple of photo's I quickly took - ignore the mess, we're mid install as mentioned but more for the carpet colour etc. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Blog: http://cbcbuild.blogspot.com.au/ Building Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62155 Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 2Jan 10, 2014 10:27 am If it's dedicated, dark is good. Our theatre room is done in Taubmans Black bear which is basically a dark chocolatey brown - I painted walls, cornice and ceiling all in the same colour. The window has floor to ceiling block out drapes with pelmet that are an even darker brown - almost black. With the door shut, the room is really really dark. It's perfect. Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 3Jan 10, 2014 1:45 pm Thanks Bluesuede. do you have a photo by any chance?? did you paint the back of your doors, I have heard of people doing that too. The Domino recommends accents of red or orange, so thinking of buying some framed movie posters for the walls in these colours to break it up a bit and cushions for the new couch, which is a light grey. Didn't go the dark chairs. Also, because the screen is a fixed screen, it's white so that will break the room up too I think during the day. I'll paint part of the bulkhead that the screen is going to cover and see what it looks like and post a pic before I do the parts that you will see... I will be going black flat for all and accented with deep burgundy panel and sound deadening curtains. I will use mouldings and rails to break the black up. I am using trio cornice and stepping skirtings so tying the theatre should be easy. Check out the various build threads on Avs forum. Remember you will more than likely need some sort of acoustic treatment which can be contrasting colours to break up the main colour. Personally I would consider painting the ceiling as I think it will reflect light off the screen. Good luck Cheers Mark Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 5Jan 10, 2014 2:37 pm Lilac Thanks Bluesuede. do you have a photo by any chance?? did you paint the back of your doors, I have heard of people doing that too. Don't have any pics handy but will post something up when I get a chance. I haven't painted the backs of the entry doors because my intention is to put some sort of movie themed giant sticker over them - like a giant b&w image of Marilyn Monroe, or something - haven't decided or found what I want yet. I'm yet to start putting anything up on the walls but have a large framed Star Wars movie poster to start with Everything is dark - dark brown leather lounge suite too. I've kept the skirting board white as a contrast between the carpet and walls. Picked up a 2.4m long low entertainment unit for my amp etc and with drawers - also dark. Sounds nice. Any pics of the unit. Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 7Jan 10, 2014 4:36 pm The screen recess should help with light spill a little, but as recommended I would consider painting the ceiling also. It really depends how full-on you want to go. Saying that, it sounds like you are pretty serious. I got our doors painted as they will also reflect light, especially being an enamel paint. We ended up painting the side and back wall in Wattyl Urban Grey, then the ceiling/cornices and screen wall in Wattyl Grey Ember. I grabbed a test pot of each and painted a large piece of cardboard before making the final decision. I would suggest doing that before making a decision. Because my iPhone plays with the colours so much I'll include this one below before carpet etc which shows the colours a little truer. I'm having a white feature cornice as well. I am also going for a dark carpet. See below for colour swatches. It's important to stop light coming in through windows but equally important to reduce the reflected light in the room. A white ceiling will reflect a lot of light. I would go a darker color for ceilings and cornices. I actually covered my ceiling and walls with material so paint color was not an issue in my case. But darker colors reduce light reflections. You may find that the double doors leak a lot of sound unless you seal them up properly. dedicated rooms are awesome. Enjoy! Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 13Jan 12, 2014 8:35 pm I've seen some great theatre rooms done in Dulux Namadji. It's really quite black though. Was very effective, as it wasn't simply black, but had night time sort of look to it. If you really want a home theatre, you've got to have a dark ceiling if not black, otherwise you just have a media room. Wall colour was Lady in Red, another Dulux colour, although if I was given an ultimatum of dark ceiling or red walls, I'd take the dark ceiling. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. I painted a patch on the wall behind where the screen will sit - I like it, comes up lighter on the wall than on the cardboard, mind you is only one coat but it really is a charcoal grey. We have a dedicated room with screen (looks the same as yours bluesuede), projector, ceiling and wall speakers, but we are not going full tilt on the home theatre as far as curtains, fabric etc - it's just not big enough of a room for that, I think we will be in between media room and home theatre. Anyway, I think I will paint with Namadji and see how it goes - I'll post once complete, which hopefully will be in a few weeks... Now my concern is that we are going to paint the walls dark, the speakers are white and will stand out thanks so much again! You can often paint them the same colour as the wall/ceiling that you have them fitted in to. The metal mesh in from of the speaker can be spray painted quite successfully. Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 18Jan 20, 2014 7:29 am We are also in the process of choosing our cinema room colours. Our carpet is also dark with the skirtings and arc's in Dulux Lexicon quarter. I am thinking of Dulux Malay Grey, with the colour also on the roof. It is a warmer grey, as we are going for dark chocolate cinema seats. I like the idea of the movie pic's around the room also! http://chasingcoconut.blogspot.com.au/ Re: Dark Paint assistance - What colour's your Home theatre? 19Jan 26, 2014 10:32 am bpratt Lilac Now my concern is that we are going to paint the walls dark, the speakers are white and will stand out Are they the standard in-wall speakers that are easily available ? You can often paint them the same colour as the wall/ceiling that you have them fitted in to. The metal mesh in from of the speaker can be spray painted quite successfully. Thankyou!! I was wondering about that but thought it may clog the holes... I looked up our speakers (Jamo 6.5cs) and it specifically says white covers (Paintable) to blend in with your chosen colours for seamless installation - Yay! You have to use a spray gun and then when still wet blow the outside to push the paint through the holes (hair dryer??). So I am going to get someone in to do the painting otherwise I will never get around to it and they will have the right equipment. Our speakers are all ceiling mount, but due to the very bad positioning of our beams in the roof, our installer couldn't get the centre speaker in - it would be very off-centre and look weird. so we have two at the back of the room, and the 3 at the front of the room are being positioned with one in the centre of the bulkhead pointing down in the bulkhead above the screen (hope that doesn't effect the sound quality), and then moving the 2 remaining ones on to the face of the bulkhead each side of the screen so to face you - will that still work - are ceiling speakers only for the ceiling?? If you look at the first picture I posted that faces the bulkhead you may get what I mean. Personally I would not used ceiling speakers in a HT room, especially with going to the trouble of having a nice screen etc. If the installer puts the speakers as suggested, think about how it will sound when audio pans from one side of the screen to the other, like a car for example. It will come out into the room on the left, then move up into your bulkhead pointing down into the floor, then back up the the right channel pointing at you again. While still not optimal, I would rather have the speaker above or below the screen. You wanted it tilted towards your seating position if possible, but with in-ceiling/in-wall you can't do this. Is this installer a HT installer? Or a sparky? I'd be a bit concerned if it was a HT installer suggesting these placements. If you have already purchased those speakers then I would be looking to put them all facing into the room on that bulkhead, just remember the sound may sound like it's shooting above your head (which in my opinion is better than shooting straight into the floor in front of your screen). It's certainly not optimal, but with those speakers and the layout that's all I can think of for now.
