Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 May 08, 2008 1:58 pm Hi guys, been a while since i was last on here (been a bit slack with the reno's) but just finished the prep work for one of the bedrooms, now i have an idea of the sort of colours (natural, browns + greys type shades) i like but my issues whether they will be too dark.
Heres some background. Issue is with the 2 smaller bedrooms is that they are long and skinny, with door (820) then the robe rest of width at one end, and huge 1800mm floor to 2100 high at the other end. The room is only 2750 wide x 3500long (plus rob area) of 600 making the total room length 4100 long x 2750 wide Robes will have siding doors (someone suggested to put mirror sliders in) and paint the far end wall (with the window in it) a darker colour. like the idea of a darker wall at one end, not sure about the mirror door idea (though do like the idea of each room having a full height mirror.) Now my other concern is that i live in Melbounre and for some reason this house has a cold feel to it, so i would like a colour that reflects warmer feel, hence a slightly darker shade but from my limited knowledge of paint and colour i always thought light colours were best to give a greater feel of space and darker colours close it in . The colours i quite like are all Wattyl These are the light colours that i like: Walls: Flokati Then end wall with window (oppsite end to the door and robe) maybe a white pepper or Scallopini Trim/Window: maybe either Purest white or Chalkdust I believe these colours should help make it look bigger (space wise) but will they bring in warm feel to it? Or should i go with a darker wall shade like Alabaster/Igloo//Kid Leather still with Trim/Window: maybe either Purest white or Chalkdust Sort of feel the darker shades might offer a bit more of a warmer feel, but do others think it will also bring a inclosed feel to the room. I want to run whatever colour i choose through the whole house. Btw all the rooms in this house (bedrooms+lounge+family etc) have the feel that they are a lot longer then they are wide. So this is a common theme/problem through the house (ie wanting to make it look more open). Anyway advice, thoughts opinions, feedback all welcome and or other suggested colours that might work better to achieve the end result. I am a single guy well sort of as she doesn't live here yet so i am not keen on shades of pinks, peach, or real white creamy colours either Cheers stewy Re: Interior Paint Questions and Room Space 2May 08, 2008 2:07 pm Are you thinking of replacing the carpets???
As I will need to know this while looking at your colours. I will get to all the questions in my forum tonight! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Interior Paint Questions and Room Space 3May 08, 2008 2:12 pm Hi michelle,
Umm yeah i think i better, get new carpets, so i will get something to match the paint heres a pic of the room before i rubbed it back and undercoated it, 4 times to get rid of the pretty blue lucky this is the only room that they painted blue, the rest of the house is yellow but with the same lovely blue carpet Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ cheers stewy [/img] Re: Interior Paint Questions and Room Space 4May 08, 2008 3:09 pm Hey Stewy,
We must have very similar tastes I'm building with PD who use wattyl paints - and am trying to come up with internal paints. Flokati is a nice colour but I felt it was too light for our main walls and it came up, so I am also considering Kid Leather, Igloo and Alabaster I was originally going with kid leather but when looking at it on a larger scale I think it may have a slight beige tone to it and am thinking more of Alabaster now with purest white trims. I love White Pepper and want to use this as a feature wall in the main bedroom. Scallopini is also a gorgeous colour, if you look at Rellie's blog she used this colour for her main walls looks great! Good luck, I'm sure Mich will have great advice for you. I just wanted to pop in and tell you what great taste you had Re: Interior Paint Questions and Room Space 5May 08, 2008 5:52 pm stewy……nice deep blue carpet there! That’s a part of the problem, its too dark for the small room, therefore pulling it in!
Because the rooms are so small you will have to be very careful with colour choice. Here’s my thoughts. Ceiling /Cornice - White Walls – Wattyl “Flokati” Feature Wall - (Warme Colour) Wattyl “Whipped Cream” NOT ON ANY PAINT CHARTS! Feature Wall 2nd choice - Wattyl “Ceylon Ivory” Gorgeous!!!! (Light mocha) Skirting / Architrave - “Flokati” Doors - “Flokati” Window Treatments – Something matching the “Flokati” colour. Carpet – Choose a carpet close to “Ceylon Ivory” or a shade or 2 darker! Dark enough, but not too dark to pull the room in! Cornice, skirting and trims – are very small, not decorative, when this happens it is best to paint them all the wall colour. You don’t want to see them, as there is not much to see! By painting them a dominate colour you are pronouncing them and making them stand out, all good and well if they are nice and worth looking at. But in your case you need to hide them…..no offence! Now because your home has a cold feel to it, I have introduced a warm colour in the feature wall. Something you might like to think about while doing the rest of your home. When choosing feature walls, lean to the warm side of the spectrum …….lemons, light reds, soft Terracottas, or light chocolates. This room is now basically monochromatic….. This will help the room to appear brighter, warmer and by adding a slighty darker feature colour on one of the side walls, (possibly the one on the right so you see it from the door way!) you have now added depth to the room and well as the length. By the way the 2 feature colours I have chosen are off the Wattyl fan deck, to see these colours you might have to go to a paint store to have a look! I hope this helps you, good luck, and have fun! Hope you don't mind me asking some more questions, but are you suggesting having 2 feature walls in this room? ie have the Whipped Cream along the window wall (i would assume that i would paint that trim around the window the whipped cream too?) and then have the Ceylon Ivory along the wall the the right of the picture? Sorry some of us don't quite get the colour thing quickly This wall on the right of the picture, is the long wall 3500 long, the wall were the window is only 2750, so i guess i am trying to square the room up a little as well. You suggest to paint the cornice both white and wall colour but i think i will go with white as that has been replaced since that picture (didn't even think someone would pick up on that sort of thing) As for the carpet, yeah it's old and stuffed.....actually looks quite good in that picture, but yeah in real life it's stuffed. As for warm colours are there any other suggestions apart from yellow.....oh i just can't stand that colour orange/red/shades of brown etc all sound good so i might have a closer look at some of these. cheers for the advice/help stewy Re: Interior Paint Questions and Room Space 7May 08, 2008 6:54 pm No stewy I have given you 2 options for your 1 feature wall. You decide which one you like best.
No ....its white for the cornice….sorry for the confusion there! This wall on the right of the picture, is the long wall 3500 long, the wall were the window is only 2750, so i guess i am trying to square the room up a little as well. Yes that’s what will happen by painting the side wall.
