Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Sep 07, 2013 10:57 am I'm looking to paint my entire 1960's house in either Dulux Whisper White or Antique White USA. Two bedrooms face south/east, one bedroom faces north, the lounge room faces east and the kitchen faces west. The kitchen will be renovated with gloss white cabinets. I can't decide, but I think Antique White USA might be best as it's a little softer and most rooms don't get great sun? But how would this go with gloss white kitchen cabinets in a bright room? Also, I'm completely confused about what colour to paint the skirting/architraves/cornices/ceiling, e.g. strengths, gloss/matt/semi-gloss etc. I would like the skirting and architraves to contrast with the wall paint. The lounge room in particular has a decorative cornice. What's best to choose? Appreciate any advice! Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 4Nov 03, 2013 6:57 am We painted our old house in whisper white with antique white USA trims. We were really happy with the colour. There are now 4 homes in our family all choosing the same colour combination. Looks fresh and clean Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ . The photos are from a month ago when we had the house cut in half and moved. Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 5Nov 03, 2013 9:57 am We'll be doing Antique White USA throughout with some kind of brighter white trim. Possible "white on white". My friend and brother both have antique white and it's such a lovely shade. Another friend has whisper white and I find it a touch grey for my personal taste. Not sure how it'll go with gloss white cupboard though. I'll be able to tell you in about 5 months! :s Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 6Nov 03, 2013 6:04 pm Hi, We used whisper white and liked it. That brand is very good to apply. I'd recommend buying a small amount of each and painting 2 whole walls, then hanging a few frames of something to get the idea. The colours are so similar it won't matter if you change to the other one and then overpaint one of the test walls. As to the skirts it is a matter of taste what gloss level you use, and whether a contrasting colour or not (probably not) but water-based enamel is available in Dulux. I'd use semi-gloss. Again, buy a small amount of each and try it out. If you think one colour might be a bit grey, or a bit yellow, etc, ask the paint guy what the recipe is for that shade from his cards, and you will know if it is a real impression. Now any colours already there will need to be very thoroughly undercoated, possibly 2 coats, or the perceived colour of the paler topcoat will be affected. We had a sand/beige sort of colour there already, and it definitely needed this treatment. Cheers Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 7Nov 03, 2013 6:31 pm My mum's house was painted in antique white usa throughout. It is not a house that gets a lot of light except in the late afternoon (faces s/west) and the colour has really opened it up. It is a lovely soft white, as someone has mentioned. It looks velvety on the wall and seems to emphasise any architectural features. Trims and skirts were done in the semi-gloss. Even though it's the same colour the level of shine makes a difference to how our eye perceives the colour. There's much more reflected light bouncing around in the space now. The small study even looks larger. The previous colour was a very yellow cream. It's amazing how much fresher, brighter and larger the interior looks! Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 8Nov 09, 2013 2:26 pm You probably can't go too wrong with either. But if it were me, I'd probably lean to the Whisper White. Antique white can look a fraction too yellowy (for my liking) in some light. But.... that is only when I am closely analysing (ie, choosing paint colour or looking at other people's walls to gauge a colour) - as I have been doing recently to find a white colour for our exterior (ended up going with white on white). But overall, if I had either on the walls and were living with it without analysing it, I'm sure would be happy with either. We did in fact have Antique white on walls in previous house and liked it - but it was a big open house with lots of light. Have seen it in a friends house with smaller closed off rooms and hallways and that is when it looks a bit yellowy. Good luck with your choice. HHCIB Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 9Nov 09, 2013 11:39 pm It will help narrow your choice again if you decide between a warm versus cool white base. You see whisper white is a cool white and antique white is warm. Then buy sample pot/s and paint 2 coats onto some large card (preferably a3 or larger), wait to dry and view your samples in different lights at different times of day Re: Whisper white / antique white usa - can't choose! 10Dec 08, 2013 8:14 am Hi wixy Just read this thread and wondering what colour you went for was it antique white usa or whisper white or other. I am wondering what white to paint my kitchen/family room as although the room gets early morning sun the afternoon is pretty dark especially in the dining area.. I have fair bianco 1/2 strength on there now and although it is a very nice colour im thinking it might be to dark for the afternoon. I have a dark wood dining table and chairs and a dark brown lounge suite in the family area. I have been contemplating a skylight over the table but my other half definately does not want this as he said it would make the room to hot. Any suggestions i would be gratefull.
