Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 20, 2013 11:36 am Hi, I want to decorate my new home, but I'm really in doubt if I hire or not hire an Interior Decorator/Designer. I would like to know the opinion of people who have already hired a professional ... Was it a good experience? What are the pros and cons of hiring? Making this investment was valid? Please help me!!! Thanks! Re: Hire or not hire an Interior Decorator/Designer 2Aug 21, 2013 2:47 pm It really depends on how confident you are. You can check our pinterest and design blogs or even furniture websites that have images of their products in a setting and you can try to picture it in your own house. If you are starting from scratch this can be a little harder but a lot more exciting as you can style it how you want! Personally i like experimenting myself. I find interior decorator's to be quite expensive Re: Hire or not hire an Interior Decorator/Designer 3Aug 21, 2013 3:08 pm I hired an interior designer at the plan stage - I went along and did one of those interior design courses at Home Base Expo and realised that there was a lot more to interior design than picking out colours - (In Fact if that's what your after it's a waste of time they will tell you to paint everything USA Antique White lol) I found it great especially for thinking about storage etc in Kitchen, Bathrooms etc I know over here in WA a couple of builders throw in an interior designer for free when building your house. I thinks it's like everything you've got to ring around and get the right one for you and not one who is just going to design by numbers, have you had a look at Michelle's stuff on here - some of the mood boards she produces are cool. I agree with pininterest and houszz etc you can grab some great ideas but if you add up your hourly rate and how many hours it takes to go through those sites then sometimes a designer might actually work out cheaper Cheers AKB viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Hire or not hire an Interior Decorator/Designer 4Aug 24, 2013 7:30 pm Hi all, just thought I'd pop in here quickly. I don't think (us) interior decorators are expensive. If you weigh up the cost on major mistakes you could make on your own if you aren't really sure about what you are doing, then having to have to look at those mistakes till you end up selling that house some time later, then no, we are not expensive. We study hard to learn what we know, and yes, there's more to it than just knowing what colour goes with what...... It is a carefully honed skill and a profession just like anything else and 4 years of training will ensure they can offer you a lot more than you expect! There is a reason the degree takes so long and the financial reward is not always that impressive. These people do it for love. Trust them, try one, I doubt you'd be disappointed. (ps. ensure you do choose a designer that is on the same wave length as you though - and remember it is their job to offer advice and it is your job to critique it, challenge them and ensure all those details suit you - they aren't mind readers so speak honestly and I am sure you will end up with a beautiful home! Re: Hire or not hire an Interior Decorator/Designer 7Aug 31, 2013 8:55 am Do it. Definitely do it. I'm fairly good at interior design but i just realized 1. I don't know everything and 2. I am horrible at exteriors. Seriously I used new home visual to get an idea of what the colors i thought would look amazing together really looks like....can you say fugly. Thankfully I'm working with someone who is reasonably priced. Helpful and not at all pushy. I've only had one session so far but shes made my good ideas great ones with a little tweaking.
