Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge Re: DIY Pelmet kits 2Aug 09, 2013 9:35 am I am in the process of making my own palmets at the moment. I think it's relatively easy and you get exactly what you want. Albeit that blind palmets are different to curtain palmets so you will have to specify which one you are after before I can comment further. Re: DIY Pelmet kits 4Aug 12, 2013 10:55 am So if you are thinking of doing them yourself, for a plain box, you need: - 16mm to 19mm pine - 50mm screws - padding - staple gun - hot glue gun - the same material as your curtains or something similar - angle brackets (50x50 is fine) To make the box: Measure the width of the curtain rails and add 50mm x 2 for overhang so for 2700mm you will need a width of 2800mm. Purchase from your local hardware (eg Masters) 235mm x 19mm Black Label Utility Pine and either 140mm or 184mm x 19mm of the same. Have the store cut the pieces to your desired length. Keep the off cuts. Screw the 235mm to the 140mm with 50mm screws. Use the off cut and cap the end on the inside by measuring and cutting the end to fit snug. So for a 2.4m pelmet for the wood along it could be around $50. If you are circular saw savvy, the other option is to by 16mm mdf or chipboard and cutting the strips yourself and saving a fair bit of money. Padding: Purchase the padding from your local craft shop. All you want to do is have enough to cover the face, ends and 50mm of the inside. Using a hot glue gun, stick the padding onto the box with a small amount of stretch. Cut excess with scissors. If you need to join ends, don't worry about how it looks considering it will be covered with the final fabric. Fabric: Like a xmas present, wrap the padded box with your fabric and staple the edge where the box will touch the wall. Use the hot glue gun to conceal laps etc. Attaching: 30mm above your curtains, attach 4 brackets leveled to each over to the studs. Lift the board and sit on the brackets. Screw the board to the bracket using 20mm screws. I would say a medium difficulty to do all the above but if you are good with a cordless screwdriver, staple gun and hot glue gun... you should be fine. Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4780 Re my second point – yes exactly. And often it may take additional time if the manufacturer recommends no more than X meters… 3 5623 |
