Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 02, 2013 7:29 pm Although a lot of builders have their own interior designers, I'm unsure how much help they actually provide, so am considering engaging an outside expert. But how to go about finding one that suits my style? I've looked at various websites but often the pictures are uninspiring or insufficient (note to interior designers out there, please put up *lots* of *good quality* pics on your websites! And indicate the style for each picture! There are a lot of average sites out there, and that's the only thing I have to judge by). Plus, I'm allergic to beige and "warm" colours in general, so that doesn't help I'm sure. Does anyone have any recs? Re: Looking for Perth interior design recs 2Aug 02, 2013 8:50 pm You could try dankz or minkz both offer an interior design consults, they cost but of you buy furniture from them they'll take the cost off what you buy. Though you'd have to ask if they just do once a house is built or can help with interiors as well. I don't recall seeing that house before, but I sure love that rug! Turns out that my architect is giving me 5 bonus hours with an interior designer (Design Diva), so will see how that goes first I think. I find I'm having a LOT of trouble trying to define my style. I think I know what I want but I don't know the right words to describe it! Re: Looking for Perth interior design recs 6Dec 04, 2013 11:39 pm Picking my top 5 pictures for each room of the house (from Pinterest and Houzz), and for the exterior has helped me a lot, to sort out my style. I was also guided/limited by the house design that suited our needs and block features. Since you are going for a custom design, it opens up a whole new realm of possibilities, so I imagine it makes it tougher. Did I read somewhere that you started a blog? If so, are you going to share? Also, there is another blog for a solar passive house you might like: http://ecoserene.wordpress.com. At least pinterest helps: people who work in design should be able to look at your pinterest pages and tell you what your style is. An interior designer we met with gave us some good advice: once you've picked one thing the rest will start to follow. It's definitely true that it gets easier the further on you get, because you'll have other things to fit in with, which narrows your choices. And you get a better definition of your style as you go on. Once you start talking to anyone who works in design/furniture etc (and it sounds like you already have your architect and one interior designer on that list), you should find that they take what you've shown them (eg from your pinterest pages) and summarise that style. Make a note of the words they use that resonate, and then repeat them with the next person. That way you should build up a good vocabulary for your style. Yeah I thought that too, but my boards are such a mish-mash of styles. There is a method to my madness though - I have two types of boards: what I call my "Dream" series, and my "Look book" series. The Dream boards are full of stuff that I just liked the look of at the time, something about it caught my eye. The Look Books are a tightly curated selection of what's on my Dream boards, to hopefully indicate my style. cameronandmiranda An interior designer we met with gave us some good advice: once you've picked one thing the rest will start to follow. And you get a better definition of your style as you go on. This is true! On the one hand I like having limitless possibilities, on the other hand it makes things really really hard! I'm looking forward to selecting the tiles, actually, because that will at least give me one solid thing to work with. cameronandmiranda Once you start talking to anyone who works in design/furniture etc (and it sounds like you already have your architect and one interior designer on that list), you should find that they take what you've shown them (eg from your pinterest pages) and summarise that style. I still find it hard though - I like some things about a picture, but not others, and sometimes when I point out a picture to someone, they will notice something completely different about it. I like the idea of noting the words that they use, I've found that talking the same language is pretty crucial in the building industry, and it's hard to find a sort of "dictionary" of terms to refer to. Actually I wonder if something like that exists - surely it would but I haven't come across one yet.
