Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jul 26, 2013 11:29 pm Good evening all, I'm a few months into my first home building process. I've only just signed my pre-contract agreement, so prestart is still a little while away. That's hasn't stopped me from hyperventilating every time I think about choosing all those colours. Basically, I don't know what I want. I don't know what I like, am unsure what my style is. I find myself in a pickle. Here is what I do know; - My favourite colour is blue. My room is blue, my car is blue - if it comes in blue, I generally choose it. - I tend to favour monochromatic clothing, so perhaps that translates to my taste for houses (?) - I want something original, but not experimental. I'm not a very edgy person. Go figure. - Floorboards are nice. They have a certain warmth that tiles lack, I think. In the first instance, I'd love to have external colours sorted. Despite my love of all things blue, I think I am favouring warmer tones for outside. Surely I'm not the first person who has ever built a house to be in such a predicament. I just need something to go on, some tangent to cling on to, something to tell my poor design consultant so she/he isn't totally lost. Have you experienced this issue? How did you overcome it? Any advice is good advice at this point. I'm hoping at least one person is like me so I feel less crazy! Re: No idea where to begin - developing prestart phobia 2Jul 26, 2013 11:42 pm go with something neutral and accessorise with blue greys work well with blues? If you are preferring warm a teal/turquoise blue goes well with chocolates? (i think...trying to remember how I've seen it done lol ) I remember walking through display homes trying to find something we liked but nothing made me go wowww i want that! it all slowly came together after that but yeah its not easy Have a good look at tiles and laminates and see which ones you prefer and see if there is a theme once you look over it all? Just pleeeease don't go for blue cupboards... Great for inspiration. That and pinterest. Pinterest is a great place too as well as the various threads on this forum. First of all - don't panic!!! you know what you like, you just don't entirely realise it yet! as you start to go through photos, if you like one, Stop and ask yourself why. Maybe it's the rustic wood elements, or the clean feeling, or a certain colour combo that stands out. Take little notes and you'll see your taste emerge before your eyes little by little you'll get a better idea of what you want. Secondly..... You can't go wrong with neutrals. You sound like neutrals would work well for you as you said you're not edgy. I'm guessing a big blue kitchen splash back might not be your cup of tea..even if its blue. If you stick with neutrals (gray, white, black, brown, beige) you will have so many options to adding colour and pizzazz. They're great blank canvases Thirdly..you already have a bit of an idea of what you like. Great! Warm wood floors, warm facade colours....that's actually a lot to start with! Good luck! HD Re: No idea where to begin - developing prestart phobia 5Aug 25, 2013 4:06 pm Thanks for the advice all. I'm still very hesitant to make decisions, but now I have a deadline to work towards. My sales rep tells me I have approximately 8 weeks until prestart. Quote: I'm guessing a big blue kitchen splash back might not be your cup of tea..even if its blue. Funny you say that because this is one feature that I'm trying to work into my design... Quote: Just pleeeease don't go for blue cupboards... Haha I'm not that bad kat! I'm slowly starting to make some decisions. I'm choosing floorboards over tiles. Charcoal carpet in the bedrooms. And I think I'm getting a gas fireplace in the living/dining area, so I might work with that, use it as my design starting point. I'm undecided about the exterior still. I thought I wanted the whole lot rendered, but after seeing my brothers build I'm not so sure. I have chosen liquid limestone for the driveway though. So it's coming together slowly. I'm trying to take it one room at a time so as to not get overwhelmed. It'll all turn out ok in the end. As others have mentioned, there are always neutrals. Can't go wrong with them! Re: No idea where to begin - developing prestart phobia 6Aug 25, 2013 4:23 pm I wanted a really light white bright exterior like the display home I'd seen. But I also felt like it wouldn't be "me" if it didn't have red in there somewhere! I ended up getting a maroony/purply coloured portico, against a beige (that had pinkness to it's warmth) render. Now that portico is my house's best feature and EVERYONE comments on how much they love the colour. You should definitely go the blue splashback. Blue's and grey's are so nice together. I've seen quite a few houses with their blade walls in a dark blue render. And for your externals, drive around any new estates close by until you find something you like. Re: No idea where to begin - developing prestart phobia 8Aug 25, 2013 10:06 pm LOL! Well heck, go for it! I have a huge turquoise 3-seater couch - if you love the colour then why not? Plus splashbacks can always be changed if you should ever stop liking blue Honestly with the designers to help out I think it's hard to make mistakes with your selections, they will help guide you when you're unsure.
