Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 08, 2013 4:22 pm Hi everyone I am in the process of organising our renovation and I am in desperate need of colour advice! I am hopeless at this kind of thing I need to pick tiles, paint colours and splashbacks, and I am thinking some sort of combination of chocolate brown, white and beige, although I also like the idea of having splashes of green in there too. I think my tiles are going to be "Matang Mocha" from Carpet Court (can't find a link to these, sorry). My kitchen cupboards are going to be glossy white. My furniture is mostly chocolate brown. Oh and my living area floors will be polished pine. I don't even know where to start to make sure everything goes together! Has anyone got any advice? All I've been told so far is to find pictures of what I like and copy them, but that is a lot harder than it sounds as I can't find anything exactly right. Thanks! Re: Colour help needed! 2Apr 08, 2013 4:30 pm Have you chosen the exact white for your kitchen? If not, order a heap of samples and start narrowing that down. You could always go for a nice earthy green for your splashback, that would look nice with the dark wood furniture? Once the cabinets are sorted, you could then get a heap of paint chips and put them next to everything else to start narrowing that down. Do you want a scheme on the warm or cool spectrum? I don't really know if I want a scheme on the warm or cool spectrum, how do I work that out? I do want the kitchen to be light and bright as the house is quite small, does that help? Re: Colour help needed! 4Apr 08, 2013 6:13 pm Which white have you chosen? You have chosen the tiles, so do you think they are on the warm or cool side? Warms would have more red and yellow undertones, cools would have more green/blue. A light and bright kitchen could be either, I found some good pages on google that were helpful in identifying cool or warm schemes... eg http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/416809 Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Colour help needed! 5Apr 08, 2013 6:55 pm I'm not exactly sure which white the kitchen is, it is just a cheap flat pack (budget reasons) and it only came in gloss or matte white (I chose gloss). I'm not 100% sure if the tiles are warm or cool but I'm thinking cool - they look greyish in the shade if that helps? I must be even more hopeless than I thought! Re: Colour help needed! 6Apr 08, 2013 7:11 pm Not at all, it's all a bit mind boggling. You are only at the start of the process, give it a few weeks and hopefully you will be surprised at how far you have come with your choices! If I were you, I would get a heap of largeish paint chips in various whites, and hold them near the tiles and floorboards to see how they look. (Hope this link works) http://s1289.photobucket.com/user/bec234/media/tile_zps0a31e6c1.jpg.html#/user/bec234/media/tile_zps0a31e6c1.jpg.html?&_suid=136542073177305553518289147783 Re: Colour help needed! 8Apr 09, 2013 6:35 am mmm I'm not too sure, they are quite a dark tile aren't they? I haven't actually seen any tiles quite that dark with a white kitchen, that's not to say it wouldn't work. Hopefully Michelle will see this and give some advice when she gets the chance, she is very good. I was initially planning to paint that on the walls but now I'm not sure. I can't really put pics of the exterior up as it isn't painted yet, it won't be much help! (And as of tomorrow it will be a bare frame). I've just been playing with colours but I'll put up a photo of what I had in mind - http://s1289.photobucket.com/user/bec23 ... b.jpg.html Re: Colour help needed! 13Apr 12, 2013 6:25 am Love it!!!! I was a little worried about a white roof, but Surfmist will pull it off for you. You might need to check that such a light roof is ok with your council. I don't really know if I want a scheme on the warm or cool spectrum, how do I work that out? I do want the kitchen to be light and bright as the house is quite small, does that help? Hi Bec, In order to know whether you want a warm or cool colour scheme is to know if you have enough natural like coming in. For example, if you have a westerly facing kitchen, you will have a tonne of sunlight in the afternoon, and take it from me, cooking in a kitchen facing west is a sauna! So you would go for a cool colour scheme with colours that look blue or green tinge, cool, crisp and fresh. If your home was facing south however, your room would be extremely cold, receiving little light, so you would need to add red based colours to add the warmth that room is missing. Vivid White by Dulux is there purest of whites, and would sit well with your glossy white kitchen cabinets. It’s very bright and airy looking. It can however, come out a bit cold, so you may want to add accessories to add warmth to your kitchen. Adding vivid white will give you a high contrast scheme, Dark/light. Like the image below, Pure white cabinets and wall, dark brown floors. http://www.houzz.com/photos/825769/Kitchen-contemporary-kitchen-new-york Another option is to have a warmer white on the walls such as Limed white Quarter and Subdue Quarter from Dulux. Add green accents such as to your splash back with a moss green feature strip, or if you are courageous enough and a lover of colour make the whole splashback with green mosaics-there is such a variety out there now. This will go very nicely with your warm white and brown tiles as red and green are opposites on the colour wheel and complement each other. It’s not easy what you are doing and trying to create a seamless flow in your home. And it’s very, very confusing. But you are onto a great start!! If you want A4 colour paint samples, email me and I can post them out to you. Happy Renovating! deanne@designsbydeanne.com.au Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls.
