Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 15, 2013 9:13 am I'm only at the very start of process and feeling a little overwhelmed with the thought of making sure everything ties in together. I'm sure most of you have had this feeling at various times along the way. I guess I am hoping for some practical tips on how to go about making sure it all looks good, particularly the inside? In the booklet given by Porter Davis, it says to keep in mind your carpet and other flooring choices when choosing your tiles, and to bring your tile sample to carpet appointment. So where do you actually start? I know what kind of floors we are having in main living areas (lime wash bamboo), and our furniture is kind of rustic- some is blue toned and some brown, with timber in wenge colour and rattan. I'd like a white or off white kitchen too.... I'm going to outline some of my very early stage initial thinking about this in the hope someone will share their thoughts and experience too.... I'm thinking carpets and tiles will be on the warmer side of neutral, as I think greys will kind of jar with the overall look...am I on the right track in my initial thought rpocess? Perhaps cabinetry will be some shade of off white, with beige or off white stone benches.... I think if I don't have some kind of scheme in mind before I actually see tiles and things, how on earth will I know where to start! Otherwise we will just be vaguely drawn to a tile etc that we like and it might not go with everything else.... Thanks in advance for listening to my dribble! Im building with porter davis too and i think im going to base it similar to their contemporary grey style, likely changing the tiles though...i don't have any furniture atm though(well i do have some, but it can stay where it is) and ill be buying all new stuff to suit the house. Re: Tips on getting colour scheme right please 3Mar 15, 2013 1:09 pm Xile, thank you for pointing me towards that, it is actually very helpful! Even though we wouldn't strictly stick to one of those styles as such, as you say it is very helpful in seeing colours and styles of furniture together. Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Tips on getting colour scheme right please 4Mar 15, 2013 2:29 pm The way I help clients through the process is always to start with the selections which give you the least amount of options first! So, generally that would mean starting with the floor (especially if you are using timber or carpet, tiles are a bit easier). Then, generally the kitchen (or bathroom tiles) would be next on my list. Pick out your favourite samples, and then lay them on top of your floor samples to see how they work together. Then I would generally move onto the bathrooms, choosing wall tiles and feature tiles. The paint colours should be the last thing you choose, as they are so many paint colours it will be easy to match them once everything else is selected. I would suggest having a good look at magazines, Pinterest or Houzz to give you lots of ideas as well. Once you look at enough pictures you should start to realise what you like and dislike, whether that means realising you like warm and earthy colours or you prefer a modern glamorous style. Hope this helps a bit! It's a bit overwhelming at the start, but I'm sure you will love it at the end. I am starting to get a picture in my head of how I would like it to look... I know I want to steer away from greyish/cool toned tiles, which I guess means I would opt for a warm shade of carpet to tie in with this. So I am on the right track with what you are saying about the process. Would you mind sharing your input on my last post on this thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=63457 Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Tips on getting colour scheme right please 6Mar 18, 2013 5:11 pm I always start with the kitchen and work out from there. Kitchen being the hub of the home and the most expensive space to replace in a home. I agree with Anna, get some books check out Google homes and Pinterest, you need to at least have some idea when you want your design to be. If you have a firm idea, don't be swayed by the consultant on colour day, it can be a very confusing time if your not firm with your choices and someone makes you doubt what you have. I do know what I want for the kitchen, so that is good! White on white. I have started my pinterest board... i can see how that can become addictive! I have to forcibly stop myself from pinning all through the night cause one pin leads to another and another! Lol we're all like raccoons on there gathering shiny things! Haha If you definitely do not like cool grays, then stay away and stick to a warm palate you'll be able to tell when you bring your samples together if one of the pieces sticks out like a sore thumb A gray I am nuts about lately is Dulux Rock Quarry.....it's not a cool grey. It's a cross between a gray and brown. It's simply lovely as its more neutral than brown but still retains some warmth and no bluish tone to it check it out!! And of course we're here to help! I'm am in the selection process right now and yes it can be daunting because you do want to get it right. You can't really go wrong with white and neutral as then you can always add colour through accessories to change the feel so you'll get more longevity out of the neutrals. A house design has so many layers, and many opportunities to create a rich design you will love I'm keeping my kitchen mostly white too but plan on some funky turquoise pendants which can easily be changed down the road if I ever tire of them (doubtful! Turquoise obsessed here :0))! HD Re: Tips on getting colour scheme right please 9Mar 23, 2013 3:47 pm arg, i just put my deposit down too..and got the big book of all the colour options etc for everything...I see what you mean now...my head. >:/ Re: Tips on getting colour scheme right please 10Mar 23, 2013 4:33 pm Little wing, thanks for the input! I will definitely get a chip of the dulux rock quarry, you pretty much are spot on with that I think as I also don't want the scheme to be too cool or too warm, somewhere in the middle, quite neutral! On the outside we are steering towards Beige Royal rendered columns, which I think it quite neutral. Funky pendants are a great idea, we will have to make sure we get some batten points put in the kitchen for a pendant or two. Xile- ah... yes, very daunting! At least this forum is here, I have used the search function so many times and asked so many questions already, we don't even have any land yet!
