Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 08, 2013 12:35 am I am currently living in a company house and it is pretty dingy, I dont want to spend big money as we only plan on living here for a year or so. What are some cheap options to brighten the place up?? Re: cheap decorating options 2Mar 09, 2013 9:43 am I'm assuming you can't paint the walls given that it's a company house, but you will be able to hang some art. Get some of those wall hangers from your hardware store that stick to the wall and won't damage the wall when you pull them off. Then get some cool art in colours that you love and hang them on the wall. You can get some great inexpensive art from Masters (I am in love with that shop!) and you can also buy online. Big W also has some pretty cool stuff for good prices. If you're super creative then you can buy a blank canvas from you local art supplies store, pick up some paint and go wild! Very very inexpensive and effective (especially if you're a great artist!) Also use rugs in light or bright colours, you can get rugs really reasonably priced from Masters and Ikea. Would also suggest cushions in complimentary colours to your rug and art and a throw rug for the sofa that matches as well. Ikea has fun cushions that are really inexpensive and Freedom will be getting rid of their summer stock soon so you may be able to pick up some cool cushions for a great price on clearance. If the place is dingy make sure you get the lighting right so use lots of lamps which you can also get for reasonable prices from Big W and Masters. Also use plants and flowers to give the room a lift, though make sure the plants get enough light if you're using them inside and you take care of the flowers, dead flowers make any home look dingy! Would love to see some before and after pics! *2fk* Re: cheap decorating options 3Mar 14, 2013 6:57 pm In addition to TwofatKatties message a simple sofa can brighten up your place by adding sofa slipcovers on it Re: cheap decorating options 4Mar 14, 2013 9:20 pm Lots of great ideas!!! I rent now and have had to get pretty creative with color! I have a bright turquoise couch which definitely adds a punch! Googling "DIY cheap home art" will bring up lots more ideas too Here are some more ideas I posted in another thread: There are tons of great ways you can make art for your home for pretty cheap, too Try going to a cheap bookstore or salvos and looking for photography or art books. Rip out the pages you like and put them in nice frames. Arrange different shapes and sizes in odd numbers for a collected, ecclectic look. You can find really nice frames at dollar stores! Don't like the color? Spray paint it! Ikea has really nice ones, too. I recommend ones with matts (a paper frame of sorts within the actual frame) as they will make the photos look very nice! You can do this with anything.....old book text pages, greeting cards, comic books, etc. while looking in a display home I saw they had taken pages out of a japanese comic book and used mod podge (a type of glue) to cover an artists canvas with. They then used a sealer to finish. It looked funky and modern and so cool! Another thing you can do is buy cheap canvases at the dollar store. Remove the canvas material, and use a staple gun to staple and stretch fabric of your choice onto the wooden frame. I recommend you only do this with smallish frames, and mix these in with other types of art as too many of this type can look quite cheesy. A super great resource for unique and interesting art is etsy.com. Etsy is a "handmade marketplace" with many fantastic artists around the world selling everything from organic baby onesies to unique ceramic dishwares to fine art prints! Love that site to bits . HD Re: cheap decorating options 5Apr 03, 2013 10:01 am A really good and cheap suggestion I have, is to replace a lot of the knobs and handles in your house. I know its a company house , but maybe talk to the company and see if they can do anything? A friend of mine updated their ktichen and it totally refreshed it with a few stainless steel knobs (the old ones were the plastic early 90s style knobs). Alternatively, bright coloured furniture etc would add some life. Coloured chairs, stools just placed smartly around the house Re: cheap decorating options 7Apr 03, 2013 9:40 pm Would like a photo so I can give as much help as the room/house needs....
